“Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn on L.A., the Oscar season and the Blu-rays that never leave his player – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Nicolas Winding Refn has returned to the scene of the crime.
The director of “Bronson,” “Valhalla Rising” and, most recently, “Drive,” is in Los Angeles doing awards-circuit press. Of course, he shot his stylish thriller in and around L.A., spinning a modern-day fairy tale about a dangerous driver for hire (Ryan Gosling) and the “damsel in distress” he fights to protect. After winning Best Director distinctions (and a Palme d’Or nod) in Cannes, “Drive” gradually conquered the festival circuit and finally opened in September, earning an estimated $34.5 million in domestic ticket sales.
The accolades have continued as of late, with Gosling’s nemesis, Albert Brooks, picking up a Best Supporting Actor win from the New York Film Critics’ Circle and “Drive” making the National Board of Reviews Top 10 list for the year.
Refn and I started there during a interview on behalf of “Drive,” one of the more thrilling features you’ll see this year:
HollywoodNews.com: “Drive” technically entered the awards race back in Cannes, where you earned Best Director honors. It has continued lately with recognition from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review. What does this recognition mean to you?
Nicolas Winding Refn: I mean, anybody liking your film and wanting to honor it … there’s always a great satisfaction both personally and creatively. You can’t deny that. It’s very, very flattering and it means a lot to me.
HollywoodNews.com: Do you also think these notices help drum up awareness for the film?
Oh absolutely. A movie like “Drive” needs critics. It needs people. It needs journalists and it needs fans to help promote it. As many people as possible. And that is the power of these awards for smaller movies like “Drive.”
HollywoodNews.com: So much of what I think makes “Drive” unique is the below-the-line aspects, from your sound design to your precise editing. Is there a technical Oscar category that you’d really like to see “Drive” nominated in?
I think “Drive” has three very interesting below-the-line categories. I focused on the music, the editing, and the photography. Those three aspects played a huge part in the creation of the film.
HollywoodNews.com: I’m glad that you mentioned the photography, because “Drive,” to me, captured a side of L.A. that we rarely see on screen. I’m in L.A. all of the time, and it never looks like it does in “Drive.”
Well, it’s not that I did [...]

Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” reveals DVD release date – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell
hollywoodnews.com: Oscar hopefuls released earlier in the year – i.e., not in November and December – face a serious challenge on staying on voters’ radars, so it’s interesting to see contenders like “The Help” and now “Midnight In Paris’ capitalize by grabbing key December dates for their DVD releases.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced that Woody Allen’s summer hit will reach DVD and Blu-ray on Dec. 20, just in time to remind people how much they enjoyed Owen Wilson’s whimsical journey around after-dark Paris.
The film, which opened this year’s Cannes Film Festival, was a tremendous success for Allen. It became his highest-grossing film over the summer, posting $55.4 million in domestic ticket sales. It also earned fantastic reviews, earning a staggering 93% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Depending on which Oscar trackers you follow, “Midnight” and Allen are in the running for Best Picture and Director Oscars, and a DVD release date in laet December will only help the film’s campaign.
A studio release says that the Blu-ray and DVD both contain a special featurette, “Midnight in Cannes,” and exclusive to the Blu-ray are cast and crew photo galleries.

“Bridesmaids,” “Star Wars” lead this weekend’s top rentals

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris Hemsworth and a certain Jedi named Luke Skywalker await you this weekend. Looking for something decent to rent? We’ve got you covered:
“Star Wars: The Complete Saga”
Hands down the most buzzed-about Blu-ray release of 2011, more for what it changes than for what it improves. Which is unfair, because even die-hard “Star Wars” fans screaming “Noooooooooo!” at the alterations George Lucas is making to his beloved sci-fi franchise are backtracking and admitting that the conversion to Blu-ray is spectacular.
20th Century Fox and LucasFilm reportedly hit it out of the park with this multi-disc set. If you can get past the endless gushing, Harry Knowles writes an impassioned speech about the various deleted scenes in the “Star Wars” set, which brings all six of Lucas’ films to Blu-ray for the first time. If you happen to know a Star Wars” fanatic and are wondering where they are this weekend, chances are they’re camped in front of a hi-def television set, nitpicking every little detail of the “Star Wars” trilogies … and absolutely loving every minute of it.

“Bridesmaids”
Still one of the funniest films I’ve seen this year, Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids” hits DVD and Blu-ray this week in an unrated package from Universal. “Saturday Night Live” standouts Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph play best friends caught in a tidal wave of hilarious disappointment as Annie (Wiig) tries to throw Lillian (Rudolph) an unforgettable bridal shower. Wiig’s brilliant timing and outstanding support from Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper make “Bridesmaids” a must see. Stay for the extended and deleted scenes, the gag reel, and the feature commentary track with the cast and crew.

“Thor: Limited Edition 3D”
You haven’t seen the son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins) until you’ve seen him on Blu-ray. Marvel continues its mighty superhero prequels with an origin story for Thor (Chris Hemsworth) arrogant Norse god who is banished to Earth where he meets his true love (Natalie Portman) and learns the value of his lineage. We’re paying close attention because Kenneth Branagh’s weighty drama – along with Joe Johnston’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” – sets the stage for Joss Whedons’ ensemble adventure “The Avengers,” in theaters next summer. To that end, Paramount’s spectacular “Thor” Blu-ray boasts a clever short film with Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) that bridges Marvel’s story gaps, seven in-depth featurettes, 11 deleted scenes, previews for “Avengers,” [...]

“Star Wars” Blu-rays break global sales records

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: As was expected, the Force was extremely strong with the new “Star Wars” Blu-rays that FOX and LucasFilm recently released.
The studios revealed that “Star Wars” is the bestselling catalog Blu-ray Disc of all time, with worldwide sales totaling one million units, including 515,000 units sold in North America in its first week alone. According to a release, this represents $84 million in worldwide consumer spending, including $38 million in North America — unprecedented for a nine-disc Blu-ray collection at a premium price.
“Once again our fan’s enthusiasm to celebrate Stars Wars continues to amaze us,” said Kayleen Walters, Senior Director, Marketing, Lucasfilm. “Our goal was to deliver a premium product that they could enjoy with their family and friends and we are thrilled that they are enjoying it as much as we hoped they would.”
“Star Wars is a franchise with universal stories that resonates as much today as it did 30 years ago,” said Mary Daily, Executive Vice President of Marketing for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and Vincent Marcais, Senior Vice President of International Marketing for Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. “With the Blu-ray, audiences can go deeper into the mythology than ever before and reconnect with everything they love about the Saga in the best possible quality.”
More from the release:
The thirteen-month campaign to launch the SAGA Blu-ray and engage consumers around the globe began in August 2010. From Darth Vader at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), a first look at San Diego Comic Con, a first-of-its-kind partnership with eBay, to creating the world’s largest lightsaber in the UK, the power of the Force continued to resonate around the world as fans came out in droves to have fun with that galaxy far, far away.
The comprehensive collection includes the six movies with unparalleled high-definition picture and sound quality, and features numerous deleted, extended and alternate scenes, new documentaries and a cross-section of the countless Star Wars spoofs that have appeared in pop culture over the past three decades. Marking the first time ever that the full Saga is available in one complete collection, STAR WARS: THE COMPLETE SAGA ON BLU-RAY also features a coveted peek into the making of the Saga with vintage documentaries, audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, prop and costume turnarounds, retrospectives and more.
Episodes I-III and IV-VI are also available as distinct Blu-ray Trilogy collections. Additionally, the Ask Vader app [...]

Netflix splits DVD, streaming services into separate companies

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Netflix announced that it is dividing its business model in half, renaming its DVD rental component Qwikster and expanding that side to potentially include video game rentals.
The news was announced by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, who apologized to customers in an honest and open blog post, stating, “It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the separation of DVD and streaming, and the price changes. That was certainly not our intent, and I offer my sincere apology.”
More from Hastings’ informative post:
Many members love our DVD service, as I do, because nearly every movie ever made is published on DVD, plus lots of TV series. We want to advertise the breadth of our incredible DVD offering so that as many people as possible know it still exists, and it is a great option for those who want the huge and comprehensive selection on DVD. DVD by mail may not last forever, but we want it to last as long as possible.
I also love our streaming service because it is integrated into my TV, and I can watch anytime I want. The benefits of our streaming service are really quite different from the benefits of DVD by mail. We feel we need to focus on rapid improvement as streaming technology and the market evolve, without having to maintain compatibility with our DVD by mail service.
So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are becoming two quite different businesses, with very different cost structures, different benefits that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently. It’s hard for me to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary and best: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster.”
As Hastings revealed, there will be no further increases to pricing, which should please subscribers. How about investors, though? The Washington Post says the company’s stock “was down slightly in pre-market trading.”

“X-Men” teaser trailer announced DVD release date

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Hot on the heels that Matthew Vaughn’s summer hit “X-Men: First Class” would be available on Blu-ray and DVD on Sept. 9, Fox Home Entertainment has released a special teaser trailer for the home video release.
For the most part, it is a mega-mix tape of all the theatrical trailers Fox used to promote Vaughn’s film earlier this summer. A title card at the end reveals the DVD release date. But the clip does remind us of all the scenes we loved in “First Class,” and solidifies the fact that this will be a must-add to the DVD collection once the title hits shelves in September.
We have the clip below:
