“X-Men: First Class” cast expands to include Byrne, Platt

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Who isn’t in Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class”?
Let’s run down the actors we already know will be in the “Kick-Ass” director’s “X-Men” prequel. James McAvoy is playing Prof. Charles Xavier. “Ingourious Basterds” star Michael Fassbender will play his rival, Magneto. Alice Eve has been cast as Emma Frost, while Kevin Bacon is going to be playing Sebastian Shaw. It was rumored that Rosamund Pike was up for the role of Moira MacTaggert, but that part just went to Rose Byrne (good choice). And Jennifer Lawrence of “Winter’s Bone” will assume the role of Mystique.
Is there room for anyone else? There better be, as Deadline now reports that Oliver Platt is going to play The Man in Black. No idea who that character is, and I grew up on “X-Men” books. Screenwriters Jane Goldman, Ashley Miller and Jamie Moss must be deviating from the comic book norm as they prepare Vaughn’s story, which will tell of the early days in Xavier’s school for gifted mutants. It’s an origin story of sorts, yet only a few original X-Men – like Beast (Nicholas Hoult) and Havok (Lucas Till) – are scheduled to show up.
“X-Men: First Class” begins filming soon, targeting a June 3, 2011 release date.

Benjamin Walker joins ‘X Men: First Class’

By Roger Friedman
HollywoodNews.com: Matthew Vaughn’s “X Men: First Class” is picking up another cast member. Benjamin Walker, star of the Public Theater’s “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson,” is the name to remember. He’s going to play Beast, the character played in “X Men 3″ by Kelsey Grammer. He’ll be joining the already cast James McAvoy and possibly Michael Fassbender.
Walker, like Grammer a Juilliard grad, is the hottest newcomer in New York theater this season. Until now, Andrew Jackson alsways was in the shadow of Abraham Lincoln. Walker made him hot.
Walker is so hot that the “X Men” role is turning out be an actual, uh, Beast. He still has a few more performances left at the Public. Then the not for profit theater is making plans to transfer to Broadway this fall. But Walker won’t be done with “X Men” until the end of the year. The question is, Will the Public wait for him? The answer is, Most likely, since Walker makes Andrew Jackson. Changing actors would do the play and the audience a disservice.

By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith
HollywoodNews.com: Actor, writer, director Robby Benson, who underwent open heart surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in late May, is on the mend and then some.
Pensacola, Fla., talk show personality Taris Savell tells us that the family considers his surgery totally successful, and in fact, that he was up and walking around two days afterward, although still in pain. Born with a heart defect, the performer who rose to fame in such films as “Ode to Billy Joe,” and continues to be heard as the voice of the beast in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” has been through heart surgery multiple times.
