Beverly Hills Hotel’s Sultan of Brunei Imposing Taliban-Like Rule

The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) announced it is pulling its annual Global Women’s Rights Awards, co-chaired by Jay and Mavis Leno, from the Beverly Hills Hotel because the hotel’s owner, the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, is imposing a Taliban-like Brunei penal code, set to go into effect in three stages beginning on May 1, that includes the stoning to death of gay men and lesbians and the public flogging of women who have abortions.
Instead of holding its annual event at the hotel on May 5, FMF has joined with gay and lesbian groups in protesting this gross violation of human rights and will hold a rally at noon on May 5 across from the hotel, in the park on Sunset Boulevard, urging the Sultan to rescind the new penal code which has been condemned by human rights groups and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. FMF will hold the Global Awards event on the evening of May 5 at the Hammer Museum in Westwood, Los Angeles.
“We cannot hold a human rights and women’s rights event at a hotel whose owner would institute a penal code that fundamentally violates women’s rights and human rights,” said Feminist Majority Foundation President Eleanor Smeal.
“‘Kill-a-gay’ laws, or laws that allow the flogging of women for abortion, violate international law and have no place in civilized society,” said Feminist Majority Foundation Board Member Mavis Leno. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed deep concern about the new penal code and stated that such draconian punishments would contravene international law and international human rights.
FMF today launched a massive petition drive and social media campaign calling on the government of Brunei to immediately rescind the new code and asking the United Nations to take action if these laws go into effect as planned.
“The United Nations must condemn the government of Brunei’s plans and explore additional options, including sanctions, if Brunei fails to rescind this decree,” added Kathy Spillar, executive Vice President of the FMF and the event director.
The new penal code is set to be implemented in three phases over three years. The first phase, beginning tomorrow, will include fines and prison sentences. The second phase includes corporal punishment such as amputations and flogging women who have abortions. The stoning to death of gay men and lesbians is slated for the third phase.

Joaquin Phoenix about the Oscars: “I didn’t know I had a choice”

Twas the night before Oscars and all through the town, everyone was stirring and no one was down. Indeed, Hollywood seemed ebullient on Saturday night as limos careened back and forth up and down Sunset Blvd. from the Chateau Marmont to Soho House and up to the Beverly Hills Hotel carrying actors, actresses, and celebrities. Meanwhile, at the Dolby Theater, in rehearsal, you could hear the cast of “Les Miserables” and a 48 person strong chorus belting out show tunes, and Dame Shirley Bassey polishing up her “Goldfinger” for the big event.
At Madeo’s on Beverly Boulevard, Charles Finch held his annual pre Oscar dinner, sponsored by Chanel, and featuring Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain. Finch, the British impresario, is also the son of late great actor Peter Finch, and he knows a thing or two about theater. The result is that his parties are like little presentations, cozily lit, super-salons.
And who did we see? Rebecca Gayheart and Eric Dane, Ioann Grufudd and Alice Ryan, producer Ed Pressman and wife Annie with producer Laura Bickford, Jared Harris and producer Cassian Elwes and so on, sprinkled in among fashionistas. Livia Firth, Colin’s wife, explained her Oscar winning husband was abroad shooting his second film in a row with Nicole Kidman. Cool.
And all through the low ceilinged room of Madeo’s you could hear the word “Argo” burbling along. Chastain, a pragmatist, told me: “I’m not going to win, and it’s fine.” She and her Italian boyfriend — Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo– are headed to Milan next week for a break before Jessica begins work on her next film. Between “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Heiress” on Broadway, Chastain has had an extraordinary run this year.
Some other guests included writer Brett Easton Ellis, and married actors Alessandro Nivola and Emily Mortimer.
Meantime, back at the newly refreshed and just reopened Polo Lounge, Warren Beatty caused a stir when he walked in– and headed straight over to a table hosted by producer Brian Grazer. Soon it was clear that Ron Burkle and Steve Bing were also there, and some attractive young ladies filled in the extra seats. But the Polo was buzzing. Brett Ratner arrived in a wool cap.
“Dark Knight” director Christopher Nolan had the table for eight right next to the Beatty-Bing-Grazer, while Alanna Stewart got her own table., Phillippe Dauman, the man who runs Viacom, was fully ensonced in a banquette. And the in [...]

Gene Simmons, Shannon Tweed wed after 28 years

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: At the Beverly Hills Hotel in a celebration attended by 400 guests, Kiss rocker Gene Simmons married Shannon Tweed, his girlfriend of twenty-eight years. The couple’s relationship has been open for public scrutiny in recent years, following their participation (and that of their two adult children, Nick and Sophie) in the reality television series “Gene Simmons: Family Jewels.”
Season six of the show kicked off in June, with a heavy focus on the rocky relationship between Simmons and Tweed. Simmons’ years of infidelity prompted Tweed to leave him in the season opener. Eight episodes later, Simmons proposed to Tweed in Belize.

‘Housewives of Beverly Hills’ star in middle of attack

HollywoodNews.com: While the ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ definitely have a lot of verbal fights, recently one of them found themselves caught in the middle of a physical altercation.
Lisa Vanderpump was reportedly out to dinner with her husband Ken and L.A. news reporter Robert Kovacik when the incident occurred, states TMZ. The group was at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel when a man began harassing them all.
Kovacik reportedly asked the man to stop as he began bothering Vanderpump. The man who was bothering the group allegedly then punched the reporter and tried to get physical with Vanderpump’s husband as well.
It is rumored that Kovacik will not be pressing charges, but Vanderpump reportedly hopes that he will move forward with it. The man was reportedly not arrested in the matter.
What do you think should happen in this situation?

Lindsay Lohan didn’t let her failed drug test ruin her daily routine

HollywoodNews.com: Lindsay Lohan has failed a drug test that could delay her “Inferno” film, among a handful of other consequences. While the singer has finally announced on her Twitter that she accepts the fault for the results and will accept the consequences, she sure didn’t let it stop her daily routine yesterday.
She managed to spend Friday at a photo shoot and then observed the Jewish holiday, Yom Kippur, with “Israeli military vet Eilat Anchel” at a house party, reports People. She then ended the night at the Beverly Hills Hotel before heading back to her Hollywood home.
At least Lohan is finally admitting responsibility for something.

We’re glad to see Sandra back from New Orleans.
