Penn Badgley talks about girlfriend Blake Lively and “Gossip Girl”

By Fred Topel
HollywoodNews.com: Gossip Girl returns for its fourth season on The CW September 13. Its leading man, Penn Badgley, has a movie coming out the 17th called Easy A. While he was promoting the film, Badgley filled us in on the new drama coming this fall, and talked about his real life girlfriend, co-star Blake Lively too.
Q: What’s new on Gossip Girl this season?
Penn Badgley: We’ve done six so we’ve been back for a while. I can’t say much but there is baby on the way.
Q: For whom?
PB: I can’t say. I can’t say but Georgina’s back. There’s a brush with death in the beginning.
Q: The very first episode back?
PB: Yeah, first couple I think.
Q: For you or someone else?
PB: I can’t say. Trust me, if I could tell you, I’d just lay it all out.
Q: What about the romantic situation?  You’re involved with so many women.
PB: Oh God, yeah. Let’s see, it’s hard to keep track. Like honestly it’s so all over the place and convoluted. It’s what you come to expect but heightened even. Paris is obviously gorgeous. I was not in Paris but I’ve seen some of the stuff and it’s.
Q: How much will we feel Paris in the show?
PB: The first three episodes so it’s a good welcome back.
Q: But I mean, you know, as far as in the body of the show, will the viewers really notice this is somewhere else?
PB: Oh no they were shooting.  I mean that’s why they went there, they took advantage of it. If they’re going to spend their money on it, they’re going to milk it for all its worth so you see Paris in a very gorgeous way.
Q: What is the theme to this season?
PB: Sex, love, and money. I don’t know.  That’s kind of roughly for every season.
Q: What do you love about your character?
PB: I think, at his best, he’s a really great guy. He’s a special guy. He has a heart, he has a soul, which not all of the characters quite do. Dan is thrust into the middle of the rumor mill and forced to deal with it and therefore often times have lapses in judgment and is far too judgmental himself. You know, he’s a bit hypocritical. In fact he’s very hypocritical.
Q: This is the fourth year on Gossip Girl now. How has that grown and changed for you?
PB: In a lot [...]

Blake Lively explains why she doesn’t use a stylist

HollywoodNews.com: “Gossip Girl’s” Blake Lively certainly has some high fashion sense on the show, but even off the camera she still manages to keep up her look. What’s even more credit to the actress is that she doesn’t use a stylist, and that she pulls everything for herself.
She said, “I’ve always loved fashion. That’s why I don’t use a stylist. Number one, it’s such an expression of self,” reports Monsters and Critics. In addition, she hasn’t caved in to the act of “Googling” herself. “Why would I want to see myself on the internet? I can look in the mirror. I think it’s destructive.”

Angelina Jolie too busy to fall into ‘Gravity’

HollywoodNews.com: Forget about the talent search for Lisbeth Salander in the U.S. remake of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” – that’s so two weeks ago.
The hot new femme role? Playing the astronaut in Alfonso’s Cuaron’s sci-fi film “Gravity” due out in 2012. But despite the number of actresses who are being considered for the role, the biggest one of them all – Angelina Jolie – has no interest in the project. She’s too busy.
Warner Bros. has apparently made overtures to Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman, Naomi Watts, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, Abbie Cornish, Rebecca Hall, Olivia Wilde, and Blake Lively per Deadline and Collider.
This comes as a surprise since it was first reported Johansson and Lively were in a tug of war for the part.
Collider lists the number of productions that Jolie is attached to:
- She is set to write and direct a love story set during the Bosnian War
- A sequel to “Salt”
- A film about the life of Cleopatra
- A remake of the 2009 British miniseries, “Unforgiven”
- Tim Burton’s take on “Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent”
- Darren Aronofsky’s adaptation of Ron Rash’s novel, “Serena”
The lucky lass who lands the role will get to play opposite Robert Downey Jr., who has a small role.
Warner Bros. is eager to cast the right actress as the project is quite risky and in need of a chick who can draw at the box office. Currently, the film is budgeted at $80 million.
The plot of “Gravity” per Collider: “A female astronaut as she attempts to make her way back to earth after a satellite crash sets off a chain reaction of further crashes.”

TIFF ’10: Ben Affleck takes audiences back to “The Town”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: We continue to preview anticipated titles screening at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival in our “Road to Toronto” feature.

The fest kicks off on Sept. 9, and HollywoodNews.com will be on the ground bringing you reviews, interviews, and a clearer glimpse at the ever-shifting Oscar race.
To read our previous preview columns, punch “TIFF” into our search window. Today, Ben Affleck follows up his acclaimed “Gone Baby Gone” – which was far better than I expected and only gets better on repeat viewing – with another crime thriller set in the roughest patches of his beloved Boston.
The Town

The Plot: Career criminal Doug MacRay (Affleck), the leader of a bank-robbing crew, falls for Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall), a bank manager they must take hostage during one of their jobs.
The Director: Ben Affleck (“Gone Baby Gone”)
The Cast: Ben Affleck, Jon Hamm, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner, Blake Lively
The Scoop: Though an Oscar winner for penning “Good Will Hunting,” Affleck had become a bit of a Hollywood punchline thanks to a handful of questionable career choices. No one was laughing, however, when his “Gone” stormed multiplexes and scored near-universal critical praise. All of a sudden, Affleck became a director worth paying attention to, making his follow-up film – “The Town” – eagerly anticipated. Was “Gone” a one-trick pony aided by a powerful Dennis Lehane story? Or can Affleck continue to tell gritty crime stories anchored by exceptional ensembles? I can’t wait to find out.
Awards Potential: Very hard to say until we see it, which will be soon. “Gone” scored very well with critics groups in year-end voting, though it was “Gone” standout Amy Ryan who received the bulk of the attention (as well as a Best Supporting Actress nomination) for her mesmerizing turn as awful single mother, Helene. Renner’s certainly capable of stealing similar thunder from his “Town” co-stars, while any improvement Affleck shows behind the camera from “Baby” to now would only impress us even more.

Blake Lively admires the acting careers of men

By Molly Sullivan
HollywoodNews.com: As Blake Lively’s career continues to grow, she’s finding that it is the careers of her male counterparts that she wants to model her own life after.
The ‘Gossip Girl’ actress has found that when she’s asked about whose career she admires, she often answers with naming men, reports Digital Spy. But it isn’t that Lively finds there aren’t women to look up to in this business, “but [she] feel[s] like men are still given much better opportunities.”
However, she isn’t too worried about finding someone to model her career after: “[T]here are so many people I admire for so many reasons that I can’t look at one person’s life and say, ‘I want that life’. I want to make my own history.”
With big roles in Green Lantern and The Town, it sounds like Lively is going to have a huge career ahead of her.

Blake Lively tackled sex scene with Ben Affleck on first day

HollywoodNews.com: Although Blake Lively may have seemed completely comfortable during her first day on the set of ‘The Town’ with Ben Affleck, she admits that shooting a sex scene with him right off the bat was a bit “awkward.”
Affleck has applauded the ‘Gossip Girl’ star for her poise during the weird situation, but she still admits that she may not have been as confident and comfortable as she appeared, reports Us Weekly. Lively admits that with acting, part of it is just acting confident, like when she appears at red carpet events: “We … pose in these dresses, but we’re all only so confident … It’s all a facade.”
Luckily the young actress was raised to be prepared for awkward moments like this as she was never treated like a child growing up with her family. She credits her upbringing for her ability to handle these more adult situations.

Blake Lively’s Serena lives on ‘Gossip Girl,’ actress balances film work

HollywoodNews.com: The rumors surrounding Blake Lively’s departure from CW’s hit drama “Gossip Girl” have been squashed.
Despite Lively being a highly coveted film actress now after her turn in “Green Lantern,” due out next summer, “Gossip Girl” creator Josh Schwartz took to Twitter to announce that he wasn’t going to kill off her socialite character Serena van der Woodsen.
Schwartz exclaimed, “Have to respond. No truth to rumours that BL (Blake Lively) requested to have Serena killed. All is well. Gossip Girl Season 4 back on September 13.”
It is rumored that Warner Bros. wants Lively for the role of a female astronaut in Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi film “Gravity.”
Lively will appear next in Ben Affleck’s crime drama “The Town” based on the Chuck Hogan novel “Prince of Thieves.”
IMDB describes “Town” as “the tale of four men — thieves, rivals and friends — being hunted through the streets of Boston by a tenacious FBI agent and a woman who might destroy them all.”
To date, Blake Lively’s prolific short list of film credits have been relegated to tween and teen fare, i.e. “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” franchise and “Accepted.”

Blake Lively wants her character killed off on ‘Gossip Girl’

HollywoodNews.com: Get a load of the latest gossip about “Gossip Girl”: There’s an internet rumor that Blake Lively is threatening to quit the CW show.
Apparently, per Digital Spy and Heat magazine, the “Green Lantern” actress is fed up with the off-camera fights and is yearning to see her character Serena Van Der Woodsen killed.
An unnamed source said: “Blake has asked producers to kill off her character. She’s tired of working on the show. It was great at the beginning, but she’s started to get bored of her storylines and all the petty fights on set.
“Nearly all the cast members have had some kind of bust-up. Besides the fact that she gets to work with her boyfriend [Penn Badgley, who plays Dan Humphrey], Blake wants to leave.”
The fourth season of “Gossip Girl” airs on CW on September 13.
