Vengeance is sought when “300: Rise of an Empire” arrives

Vengeance is sought when “300: Rise of an Empire” arrives onto Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD Special Edition and Digital HD on June 24 from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Producer Zack Snyder teams up with Director Noam Murro to create the follow up to the 2007 hit “300” in the same visually stunning style as the original. The stylized epic follows two warring nations that fight for glory amidst a raging sea.
Adapted from a screenplay by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad, and based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel “Xerxes,” Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “300: Rise of an Empire” was directed by Noam Murro. Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Bernie Goldmann produced the film, with Thomas Tull, Frank Miller, Stephen Jones, Craig J. Flores and Jon Jashni serving as executive producers.
The film stars Sullivan Stapleton (“Gangster Squad”) as Themistokles and Eva Green (“Dark Shadows”) as Artemisia, alongside Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”) as the Spartan Queen, Gorgo; David Wenham (“Better Man”) as Dilios; Andrew Tiernan (“Ripper Street”) as Ephialtes; Andrew Pleavin (“The Borgias”) as Daxos; and Rodrigo Santoro (“The Last Stand”) returns in the role of the Persian God-King, Xerxes. The main cast also includes Hans Matheson (“The Christmas Candle”) as Themistokles’ closest friend and advisor, Aeskylos; Callan Mulvey (“Zero Dark Thirty”) and Jack O’Connell (“Skins”) as father and son soldiers, Scyllias and Calisto; and Igal Naor (“Ambassadors”) as the Persian King Darius.
“300: Rise of an Empire” will be available on Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack for $44.95 and on Blu-ray Combo Pack for $35.99. Both include a digital version of the movie on Digital HD with UltraViolet.* Fans can also own “300: Rise of an Empire” in Digital HD on June 24 via purchase from digital retailers.
“300: Rise of an Empire,” told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” is a new chapter of the epic saga, which takes the action to a new battlefield—the sea.
The story pits the Greek general Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces, ruled by the mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and led by Artemisia, the vengeful commander of the Persian navy.
Knowing his only hope of defeating the overwhelming Persian armada will be to unite all of Greece, Themistokles ultimately leads the charge that will change the course of the war.

“Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn on L.A., the Oscar season and the Blu-rays that never leave his player – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell Nicolas Winding Refn has returned to the scene of the crime.
The director of “Bronson,” “Valhalla Rising” and, most recently, “Drive,” is in Los Angeles doing awards-circuit press. Of course, he shot his stylish thriller in and around L.A., spinning a modern-day fairy tale about a dangerous driver for hire (Ryan Gosling) and the “damsel in distress” he fights to protect. After winning Best Director distinctions (and a Palme d’Or nod) in Cannes, “Drive” gradually conquered the festival circuit and finally opened in September, earning an estimated $34.5 million in domestic ticket sales.
The accolades have continued as of late, with Gosling’s nemesis, Albert Brooks, picking up a Best Supporting Actor win from the New York Film Critics’ Circle and “Drive” making the National Board of Reviews Top 10 list for the year.
Refn and I started there during a interview on behalf of “Drive,” one of the more thrilling features you’ll see this year: “Drive” technically entered the awards race back in Cannes, where you earned Best Director honors. It has continued lately with recognition from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review. What does this recognition mean to you?
Nicolas Winding Refn: I mean, anybody liking your film and wanting to honor it … there’s always a great satisfaction both personally and creatively. You can’t deny that. It’s very, very flattering and it means a lot to me. Do you also think these notices help drum up awareness for the film?
Oh absolutely. A movie like “Drive” needs critics. It needs people. It needs journalists and it needs fans to help promote it. As many people as possible. And that is the power of these awards for smaller movies like “Drive.” So much of what I think makes “Drive” unique is the below-the-line aspects, from your sound design to your precise editing. Is there a technical Oscar category that you’d really like to see “Drive” nominated in?
I think “Drive” has three very interesting below-the-line categories. I focused on the music, the editing, and the photography. Those three aspects played a huge part in the creation of the film. I’m glad that you mentioned the photography, because “Drive,” to me, captured a side of L.A. that we rarely see on screen. I’m in L.A. all of the time, and it never looks like it does in “Drive.”
Well, it’s not that I did […]

“The Help” reboots Oscar campaign with DVD, Blu-ray release – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell In honor of Tate Taylor’s “The Help” reaching DVD and Blu-ray today, we’re revisiting the summer blockbuster and examining the extras that are exclusive to the discs.
Deleted scenes and a “Making of” featurette await those who pick up Disney’s release. In addition, Mary J. Blige includes a music video for her hit single “The Living Proof,” and there’s a tribute to the historical maids of Mississippi titled “In Their Own Words” that continues the messages raised by Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling novel., meanwhile, has an interesting story about a deleted scene from “The Help” that hit the cutting room floor and didn’t make the DVD clip reel … and that might be for the best.
The scene in question finds Allison Janney’s character meeting Skeeter’s (Emma Stone) boyfriend for the first time. There’s a “clean” version of the scene on the DVD. But Stone tells the magazine that in a lost take, director Taylor dared Janney to work blue, so to say, and surprise her co-stars with a salty line delivery.

“So we do the scene, and Allison goes, ‘Well, Senator Whitworth? He f—ed me silly after Ole Miss won the Sugar Bowl!’ Everyone burst out laughing behind the monitor,” Stone recalls. “Whenever I see that scene I just imagine Allison saying that.”
And now, we will, as well.
“The Help” continues to build awards buzz as it marches through the Oscar season. Viola Davis leads several Best Actress lists on Gold Derby, and Octavia Spencer is in the mix for Best Supporting Actress. “Help” is widely considered to be a Best Picture contender, and it could bring Taylor along with it for the ride.
Earlier this year, we honored the ensemble of “The Help” at the Hollywood Film Awards gala. Here is Davis’ acceptance speech on behalf of her formidable cast. At the time, some Oscar bloggers believed this was the moment that cemented her as a player in the awards race. Hard to argue.

Looking for more “Help” coverage? Read our exclusive interviews with Tate Taylor, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Kathryn Stockett. Then grab “The Help” on DVD or Blu-ray, out in stores today.

Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” reveals DVD release date – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell Oscar hopefuls released earlier in the year – i.e., not in November and December – face a serious challenge on staying on voters’ radars, so it’s interesting to see contenders like “The Help” and now “Midnight In Paris’ capitalize by grabbing key December dates for their DVD releases.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced that Woody Allen’s summer hit will reach DVD and Blu-ray on Dec. 20, just in time to remind people how much they enjoyed Owen Wilson’s whimsical journey around after-dark Paris.
The film, which opened this year’s Cannes Film Festival, was a tremendous success for Allen. It became his highest-grossing film over the summer, posting $55.4 million in domestic ticket sales. It also earned fantastic reviews, earning a staggering 93% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Depending on which Oscar trackers you follow, “Midnight” and Allen are in the running for Best Picture and Director Oscars, and a DVD release date in laet December will only help the film’s campaign.
A studio release says that the Blu-ray and DVD both contain a special featurette, “Midnight in Cannes,” and exclusive to the Blu-ray are cast and crew photo galleries.
