Oscars: Brad Pitt contemplating retirement? – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell
hollywoodnews.com: Brad Pitt’s enjoying some of the strongest reviews of his long career for his multi-faceted turn in Bennett Miller’s “Moneyball.” His producing shingle, Plan B, is filling its plate with coveted projects. And he has a very busy home life, raising multiple children with fellow A-list partner Angelina Jolie.
So should we take these retirement rumors seriously?
Speaking with Austarlia’s version of “60 Minutes,” Pitt tells Tara Brown (via The Playlist) that he’ll hang it up after three years.
“I am really enjoying the producing side and development of stories and putting those pieces together. And getting stories to the plate that might have had a tougher time otherwise,” Pitt elaborated.
Now, Pitt’s often able to get these projects made because he agrees to star in them, as well. And actors feel the need to contemplate retirement all of the time … until the next can’t-miss role is offered. But Pitt, strange as this may seem to say, does appear to be shifting into the later stage of his career. He recently did the length “walk down memory lane” career retrospective with Entertainment Weekly for a cover story. He has conquered all of the “worlds” an actor can, and unless he’s interested in directing (as his idol, Robert Redford, and his close friend George Clooney eventually did), he may keep his fingers in the storytelling pot through producing.
It isn’t newsworthy just yet. But it’s interesting that Pitt’s contemplating retirement … and feeling comfortable enough with his plan to put a timetable on it, and reveal it to an inquisitive journalist.

Spike Lee casts “Attack the Block” star in HBO drama

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: That was fast. In our story yesterday reporting Spike Lee’s deal with HBO to shoot a pilot surrounding Mike Tyson’s early days, we wondered who the director would cast as the savage heavyweight fighter.
The answer is John Boyega.
Currently starring in “Attack the Block,” Boyega has been cast as Donnie, a former juvenile delinquent who embarks on a personal journey toward redemption, THR reports. The character is based loosely on Tyson, though his name on the show (and the name of the show, itself) will be “Da Brick.”
THR adds that Milauna Jemai (“NCIS”), Julito McCullum (“The Wire”) and Kamahl Naiqui (“Gossip Girl”) also have been cast in the show, which is being described as “a contemporary exploration of what it means to be a young, black man in a supposedly post-racial America.” Lee will direct the pilot, while “L.A. Riots” writer John Ridley will act as showrunner.

Spike Lee directing Mike Tyson pilot for HBO

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Spike Lee and “Entourage” creator Doug Ellin want to get in the ring with Mike Tyson, and HBO is helping to make it happen.
The cable network has ordered a pilot for “Da Brick,” a drama that reportedly would be based on the early days of Tyson. THR reports that Lee “is set to direct with [John] Ridley on board to write and serve as showrunner.” The trade says that the show “will be set in Newark, N.J., which is often dubbed ‘Brick City.’”
Anyone who watched James Toback’s 2008 Tyson documentary knows what an absolute beast the fighter was as he climbed the ranks. Charismatic, yes. But a killer in the ring. I’d love to see Lee capture that intensity on screen. I wonder who’ll play an early Tyson?
No word on whether Lee will commit to the pilot before his “Oldboy” remake, or if he’d stay attached to the Tyson show for HBO if the series was picked up. We’ll continue to track details, and report what we find out.

Brad Pitt plays real-life hero on film set

HollywoodNews.com: Brad Pitt may be used to playing a variety of characters in movies, but he recently stepped into the real-life role of a hero on the set of ‘World War Z.’
While filming a scene where extras were in a chaotic setting as zombies were invading, a female extra slipped during the crowd madness, states People. Luckily, Pitt was there to pick her up and carry her out of the craziness.
The woman reportedly didn’t realize it was Pitt who helped her out until they got out of the mess.

Sugar Ray Leonard talks about movie based on memoir

HollywoodNews.com: Boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard is in talks about a movie deal for his well-received autobiography with Michael Arkush, “The Big Fight: My Life in and out of the Ring.” Asked who he wants to play him, the former champ doesn’t miss a beat: “Brad Pitt.”
But seriously, he tells us, “It’s not a boxing movie, per se. It’s really life; boxing is the backdrop. It’s a fight outside the ring.”
Telling his story — complete with revelations of sexual abuse by a prominent Olympic boxing coach and another older man involved in the sport — has already had an amazingly strong impact, considering the book just came out in June.
”I didn’t think it would be as cathartic as it has been, as really therapeutic as it’s been to get this out, to get rid of this toxic poison in my system,” he says. And not just for Leonard himself. He says he has been approached many times while on book tour by fans who tell him they, too, have felt the shame of sexual abuse. “Being a guy, a dude, a fighter, a black man, it’s totally against all of our rules, our codes. I’ve had all kinds of guys come up — in business suits, in jeans, in incredible shape, with beer bellies, with tattoos — they hug me and share tears. They say, ‘Man, you know, I was one of those guys. Thank-you.’”

Mark Wahlberg confirms “Fighter” sequel, reveals plot details

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Spike TV’s “Guys Choice: awards filmed in Los Angeles over the weekend, with several celebrities attending to pick up trophies like “Funniest M.F.” (to Jim Carrey) and the “Brass Balls” award (to Keith Richards).
But in between the pats on the back, some news broke.
Accepting the trophy for “Guy Movie of the Year” for “The Fighter” was Micky Ward, Dicky Eklund, David O. Russell and Mark Wahlberg, the latter of which revealing that a sequel should happen.
“We left out the Arturo Gatti fights for a reason,” Wahlberg explained on stage, “because that’s for ‘The Fighter 2.’ We’re not going to do ‘Fighter 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8,’ but we are going to do ‘2,’ and we’re going to do the Ward-Gatti trilogy.”
Ward, who Wahlberg portrayed in the Oscar-winning film, boxed Gatti three times in 2002 and 2003, earning both men a decent payday but sending each fighter to the hospital after the brutality of the bouts. Ring magazine named the Ward-Gatti bouts Fight of the Year in 2002 and 2003.
As for the “Guy’s Choice” show, it airs June 10 on Spike TV.
