Tyler Perry explains casting of Kim Kardashian in film

HollywoodNews.com: Tyler Perry received a lot of criticism for his casting of Kim Kardashian in his upcoming film ‘The Marriage Counselor,’ and now he is explaining that controversial choice.
Perry recently commented on his site that he thinks casting Kim will help others, states UsMagazine.com.
“Millions of young people adore her and are following her every move. If one of those young people see this film and find the strength to live a better life and not go through what these characters went through in this movie, then we have all done what I feel I’m being led to do here,” Perry commented about the casting choice.
A number of his fans have commented that they will boycott the film as they do not agree with his decision.

Will Kristen Stewart still act in her mother’s film, “K-11”?

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: “K-11” is the baby of Jules Mann-Stewart, writer/director of the film and mother of “Twilight” mega-star, Kristen. The film appeared to be building steam after Variety’s March announcement that the project had finally secured financing. Yet, several recent developments indicate that Stewart will not be starring in the film, as had originally been believed.
For months, IMDB Pro had “K-11” listed as a rumored project for Stewart, referencing her role as that of autistic transgender prison inmate Butterfly. Not only has IMDB Pro removed this listing from Stewart’s profile in recent weeks—it has kept listings of other rumored cast, such as Goran Visnjic and D.B. Sweeney.
Another indicator: actor-targeted computer app, Actsophia, posted a casting call announcement on its Facebook page on June 1st, announcing that “Pam Dixon is casting “K-11”” and mentioning role descriptions including this one: “BUTTERFLY 19 Redhead Tiny Beauty”.
In terms of Stewart’s production schedule, “Snow White and the Huntsman” is slated to begin shooting in September. Stewart is also listed for a role in “Backwoods”, a short that is also slated to be played by Julianne Moore. “K-11” was originally slated to begin filming in June or July, yet concrete cast details remain nonexistent.
Also casting doubt on Stewart’s intention to act in the film is the fact that her role as Butterfly was rarely (if ever) discussed by Stewart herself. It was mostly discussed by Stewart’s “Twilight” co-star Nikki Reed, who first commented in March 2009 to MTV News: “Kristen is playing a boy, and I am playing a man who is quite a few years older than she is. I am working more on my accent.” Reed since announced her departure from the project in April 2010.

“Hunger Games” adds Kravitz, Jones to growing cast

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: We’ve posted so many casting updates and in-development stories, one would almost assume that Gary Ross’s adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games” is due out this summer.
It isn’t. We still have to wait until March 2012, even though we’ve already seen the first look of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen – a teenage girl engaged in a futuristic survival competition – and filled in most of the cast.
I say “most” because new pieces to the “Hunger Games” puzzle are being added to this day. For example, THR reports that rocker-actor Lenny Kravitz is joining Ross’s cast as Cinna, while Deadline adds that Toby Jones has been tapped to play the host/narrator of the game.
Both actors join the already cast Lawrence, Stanley Tucci, Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Wes Bentley and Liam Hemsworth.
Do you like the casting? Are you anxious to see “Hunger Games,” and do you think Lionsgate is heading in the right direction with its adaptation? Let us know in the comments section below.

Hollywoodnews.com: A casting call for the upcoming Tupac Shakur biopic has been launched, encouraging fans to audition online for a chance to play the late rapper.
Morgan Creek Productions and Skee.TV/Karmaloop.TV launched an online casting call for “Tupac,” which will be directed by Antoine Fuqua (“Shooter,” “Training Day”).

“We are excited to partner with Morgan Creek on this innovative casting call,” said Scott “DJ Skee” Keeney, founder of Skee.TV. “This audition process is a great example of utilizing today’s ever-evolving technology to reach fans and actors around the world to pay homage to a hip-hop legend.”
“We’re looking for someone with the right mix of raw charm and charisma for the role,” says producer David Robinson. “At this point, we’re more concerned about finding someone with the ability to give their entire heart into the performance than just looks and personality.”

‘Runaways’ film alters casting call after racism accusations

HollywoodNews.com: After the catastrophe that was the movie adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” it appears Marvel Studios may be more willing to do what Paramount was not: cast Asians in Asian roles.
With the casting call for the film version of Brian K. Vaughan’s popular graphic novel series “Runaways”–about several privileged Los Angeles teens who discover their parents are supervillains–was released last week, the outcry was immense. The character breakdown for main character Nico Minoru, who is Japanese-American in the comics, did not specify race (generally read as ‘white’ by default), while the ethnicity of another character, Alex Wilder (African-American in the comics), was clearly stated.
Following an Internet campaign by RaceBending.com, an organization founded originally in response to Paramount’s casting of non-Asian actors in “Last Airbender”, Marvel has responded with the following message: “To address your concern over casting for the role of Nico, as we do with all of our films, we intend to stay true to the legacy and story of the comic when casting these parts. Thus, our goal is to cast an Asian American actress as depicted in the comic series and the casting notice will be adjusted accordingly.”
The casting call now reads: “Uniquely beautiful, nurturing but guarded Female, Asian-American, must play 16-18. Must be at least 16 by January 2011.” Accordingly, “Runaways” begins production in January.

‘Last Airbender’ TV series voice actor speaks out about film controversy

HollywoodNews.com: Dante Basco, the voice actor of Zuko (played by Dev Patel in M. Night Shyamalan’s film adaptation) in Nickelodeon’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” television series, has spoken out about his decision to boycott the film on his blog.
Basco, who is Filipino-American, writes that he had expressed interest in playing Zuko–the Fire Nation prince whose character journey takes him from enemy to hero over the course of the series, but who is played essentially as the film’s villain–again in the movie adaptation, but that Shyamalan had a different vision for casting: one that controversially involved casting predominantly white characters in originally Asian roles.
He writes, “The fact of the matter is, in Hollywood…it’s not fair. It’s not fair at all, the tables are tipped unfavorably for ethnic actors…So…to boycott or not? I still feel a loyalty to the whole project, I helped to make it popular and I hope the film does justice to a near perfect animated series. Boycott is a strong word, but I do know that I won’t go see it opening weekend…I just don’t think it is at all viable for white actors to play ethnic roles… at least until they let us play white roles.”
“The Last Airbender”, which opened today, has been roundly slammed by critics and audiences alike, with Roger Ebert calling it “an agonizing experience in every category I can think of and others still waiting to be invented.” The question of whether Hollywood casting white actors in ethnic roles is a product of institutionalized racism continues to be asked.
