Oscars: Muppets, Cirque du Soleil confirmed for the Academy Awards – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Some would argue that the annual Oscar telecast is a real circus. This year, it will be more like Cirque du Soleil.
Oscar telecast producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer announced in a press release Friday morning that Cirque du Soleil will present a “wholly unique and exclusive” performance during the 84th Academy Awards, which will be televised on Sunday, Feb. 26, on ABC.
The producers claim that this one-time-only event will “feature the largest Cirque cast ever assembled for a single act,” and will be accompanied by music by Academy Award-nominated composer Danny Elfman, who scored the music for Cirque du Soleil’s “IRIS, A Journey through the World of Cinema.”
The act marks the second time Cirque du Soleil has performed during an Academy Awards telecast. The troupe’s first appearance, at the 74th Academy Awards, sparked discussions about creating a permanent show at the Kodak Theatre and resulted in the creation of “IRIS.”
In addition, Muppets fans disappointed that their viral campaign to get the puppets as Oscar hosts will be happy to hear that Kermit, Miss Piggy and possibly more Muppets at least will present at this year’s ceremony.
According to another press release, “Hollywood icons Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy will present at the 84th Academy Awards … Their place in motion picture and television history has been cemented for decades, as evidenced by their well-deserved invitation to be presenters at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony.”
You’ll no doubt be tuning in. Whom else are you excited about seeing?

Katy Perry celebrates final bachelorette days with Rihanna

HollywoodNews.com: This weekend, Katy Perry had her big, blowout bachelorette party in Vegas with Rihanna by her side to celebrate the upcoming wedding.
Perry kicked off her party at the Hard Rock Hotel Beach Club pool with a group of about 25 including her good friend Rihanna, reports People. Perry, of course, sported a white bikini while relaxing before a big night out.
After checking out Cirque Du Soleil’s KA at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, the group eventually made it to XS nightclub.
However, the night ended at Sapphire strip club where Perry enjoyed dancing around.

Cirque du Soleil-like ‘Cavalia’ boasts 60 Arabian horses

By Roger Friedman
HollywoodNews.com: Run–do not walk–maybe gallop over to a series of dreamlike white tents that have planted down in the Meadowlands Sports Center next to the Izod Center. That’s where “Cavalia,” the Cirque du Soleil-like horse pageant opened last night.
:Cavalia” is the brainchild of Normand Latourelle, one of the founders of Cirque du Soleil. He was there in 1988 when Cirque first came to what was then a not totally built Battery Park City. Twenty one years ago Latourelle got the idea to bring dozens (actual number: 60) of Arabian horses and the best trapeze artists, acrobats, and performers together. He commissioned a musical score by Michel Cusson. In 2003, he opened the show in his home town of Montreal. Since then, it’s traveled to Miami, Los Angeles, and a few other locales.

Blake Lively gets fit for “Green Lantern”

Hollywoodnews.com: “Gossip Girl” babe Blake Lively toned her body in preparing for her role as femme baddie Star Sapphire in the upcoming “Green Lantern” film.
Forgoing the typical Hollywood trainer, Lively, 22, opted to exercise alongside members of Cirque du Soleil.
In addition to impressing future moviegoers, Lively sought to be a role model to those closest to her as well.
“All I want is to be a hero to my nephews and nieces. I’m going to be the coolest aunt ever. Our director likes it real – the fights close and dirty. I’m 40 feet in the air, spiraling around. That’s the best workout you can ever do because it’s all core. You do that for ten minutes and you should see your body the next day! It’s so exhilarating, so thrilling – and nauseating,” she tells Showbiz Spy.
She also told the website recently that she has a walk-in closet of 300 pairs of shoes – a stash that apparently fell off the costume truck headed to the “Gossip Girl” set. (Not true – the set was where Lively obtained her fashion inspiration).
“The best place that I find to shop is the fitting room on Gossip Girl. I go in and take pictures on my camera phone, then email them off to the personal shoppers at stores, and say: ‘Find me this.’”

Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil deal may lead to reality show

By Roger Friedman
Michael Jackson’s estate has made a deal with Cirque du Soleil, much as I predicted on November 11, 2009.
But the Cirque du Soleil deal is going to have many branches, from what I’m told. The feeling now is that the shows will use three choreographers. Two will be well known. A third may be selected from a reality show competition that would also yield dancers.
“Michael was always looking for new talent,” says an insider. “We would find it through a reality show.”
