Ewan McGregor steps behind the camera with “American Pastoral”

Later on this week, Ewan McGregor officially becomes the latest actor to turn filmmaker when his directorial debut American Pastoral hits theaters. In the lead up to its debut at the Toronto Film Festival, the buzz suggested that McGregor had a potentially Academy Award friendly movie on his hands. In fact, even I predicted the flick in a place or two. That likely won’t come to pass, but it’s interesting to note the talent that he gathered for this outing, both in front of and behind the camera. This suggests that this won’t be a one and done type situation. As such, it’s time to officially consider McGregor to be a multi-hyphenate, not just an actor. He’s in the club.
The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Philip Roth. Set in 1968, it follows the Levov family through a melodramatic crisis. They’re led by patriarch Seymour/Swede (McGregor), who watches his seemingly perfect middle class life fall apart when his daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) and her new radical political affiliation threatens to literally destroy their family, including Seymour’s wife Dawn (Jennifer Connelly). Potential misery follows. McGregor directs from a screenplay by John Romano, who adapted Roth’s book. Also in the cast are the likes of Uzo Aduba, Rupert Evans, Molly Parker, Peter Riegert, David Strathairn, and more. Alexandre Desplat contributes the score, while cinematography is handled by Martin Ruhe. If nothing else, McGregor didn’t lack for talent in helping him achieve his goals. It was just a matter of if those goals were well founded or not.
Reviews have not been strong for this one. It wasn’t quite savaged, but the word out on the street from the festival circuit was that McGregor was unable to capture Roth’s novel. It’s hard to do, admittedly, but it can be done, as James Schamus proved earlier on this year with Indignation. McGregor seems to still have a future behind the camera and is able to direct actors, but this was the epitome of a flawed first feature. It happens, and while I’m certainly still excited to see what he does next in that regard, it seems smart to not immediately assume his follow up is a potential Oscar vehicle. At least, not before seeing it.
Once upon a time, American Pastoral was tipped for awards. Had that still been the case, we’d be talking about campaigns in Best Picture, Best […]

Dakota Fanning’s Marc Jacobs ad banned in UK

HollywoodNews.com: Dakota Fanning may be a role model for many young women, but her new fragrance ad for Marc Jacobs has some controversy stirring up.
The United Kingdom’s Advertising Standards Authority has reportedly banned her latest ad for Jacobs as it is believed to be too risque for a minor, states UsMagazine.com.
“We considered that the length of her dress, her leg and position of the perfume bottle drew attention to her sexuality,” the group said about her dress being short and the bottle resting between her legs.
The group then decided that the ad does sexualize a child and is not appropriate.

Lindsay Lohan allegedly snubbed by other stars during fashion week

HollywoodNews.com: With Lindsay Lohan’s constant drama, it seems that other celebrities don’t want anything to do with her.
It is rumored that Lindsay was snubbed by a few stars while at New York fashion week, states UsMagazine.com. Mary-Kate Olsen was reportedly more than a little upset when seated at a table across from Lindsay at ‘V Magazine’s’ party.
But she wasn’t the only one who didn’t want to be near Lindsay. Dakota Fanning reportedly had a little moment as well when Lindsay sat near her at a Marc Jacobs fragrance launch. Fanning reportedly scooted further down the banquette to get away from Lindsay.

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning to debut “Cutlass” at HollyShorts

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: The Twilight Saga’s Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning will be seen on screen yet again at the HollyShorts film fest, where a short in which they act “Cutlass”, will be screened on opening night. The film (directed by Kate Hudson) released in 2007, quite some time before the pair worked together on “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”, the film set most commonly linked to their acquaintance. Subsequent to their work on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”, they went on to co-star in “The Runaways” in which Stewart played Joan Jett and Fanning played real-life bandmate Cherie Currie.
With a mission of “showcasing the best and brightest short films from around the globe”, the 7th annual HollyShorts Film Festival will run from August 11th to 18th in Hollywood. Other opening night features will include shorts directed by Jennifer Aniston, Rachel Weisz, and Kristen Kiwi Smith, and acted by Robin Wright, Kris Kristofferson, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Anna Faris, among others.
“Cutlass” follows a middle-aged woman, Robin (played by Virginia Madsen) as she reminisces about her teenage years and her first car, an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme. The tale is told alongside Robin’s consideration of her own daughter, Lacy, as she comes of age. Stewart plays a young Robin. Fanning plays teenager Lacy.

Elle Fanning on “Super 8” and sister Dakota’s college plans

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: “Super 8” star Elle Fanning walked the red carpet at her movie’s premiere in Hollywood Wednesday night and ended up answering questions about her big sister, Dakota, the high-school graduate.
“It was amazing! It was two days ago, and she had the cap and the gown and the gold rope and everything,” Elle told Access Hollywood. “It was amazing.”
As amazing as her effects-laden monster movie, a throwback to the days of “Close Encounters” and other Spielberg classics? “Super 8,” which opens everywhere today, comes from “Star Trek” director J.J. Abrams and promises more than the creature thrills being sold in the trailers.
“When you see the trailer, there’s a lot of action for the guys, and then there’s a love story – a first love — it’s very sweet,” Fanning confirmed.
She also confirmed sister Dakota’s immediate plans.
“She is [going to college],” Elle said. “Somewhere on the east coast.”

Dakota Fanning graduates from high school

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Congratulations to Dakota Fanning, who graduated North Hollywood’s Campbell Hall Episcopal High School Monday night at the ripe old age of 17.
Now go get a job!
Oh, that’s right. Fanning consistently has acted since 2000 when she took her first gig on the NBC hit “E.R.” Most notably, she’s tearing it up in the “Twilight” saga, and will head up the Volturi in Bill Condon’s two-part “Breaking Dawn” when it reaches theaters in November.
But for now, everything was about Fanning’s graduation from school, where she “was a cheerleader and this year’s homecoming queen,” PEOPLE reports.
Monday night’s ceremony was held at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles.

‘Twilight’ cast and crew close restaurant for their party

HollywoodNews.com: It sounds like everyone involved with ‘Twilight’ is having a great time as they recently partied the night away in Squamish, BC.
Rockwell’s Bar & Grill, where many from the cast are often spotted, was reportedly closed to the public for an event for the cast and crew, states HollywoodLife. The party reportedly lasted through the night with most, but not all, the stars there.
Taylor Lautner and Dakota Fanning were reportedly both enjoying their time there, but it sounds like Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were nowhere to be found.
Why do you think they were missing from the party?

Kristen Stewart followed strict rules filming ‘The Runaways’

HollywoodNews.com: Kristen Stewart had to watch what she did when she filmed certain scenes with her ‘Runaways’ costar Dakota Fanning or else she could have faced major trouble.
The ‘Twilight’ star had to be careful not to “grope” Fanning as they filmed a make-out scene because the young actress was only 15 years old at the time, reports Hollyscoop. Stewart reportedly had to film the part cautiously because “[t]here are major restrictions.”
But it wasn’t such a big deal to the two actresses as the innocent kissing scene is “like five seconds in the movie.” Sounds like everyone was able to follow the rules just fine.
