Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” reveals DVD release date – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell Oscar hopefuls released earlier in the year – i.e., not in November and December – face a serious challenge on staying on voters’ radars, so it’s interesting to see contenders like “The Help” and now “Midnight In Paris’ capitalize by grabbing key December dates for their DVD releases.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced that Woody Allen’s summer hit will reach DVD and Blu-ray on Dec. 20, just in time to remind people how much they enjoyed Owen Wilson’s whimsical journey around after-dark Paris.
The film, which opened this year’s Cannes Film Festival, was a tremendous success for Allen. It became his highest-grossing film over the summer, posting $55.4 million in domestic ticket sales. It also earned fantastic reviews, earning a staggering 93% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Depending on which Oscar trackers you follow, “Midnight” and Allen are in the running for Best Picture and Director Oscars, and a DVD release date in laet December will only help the film’s campaign.
A studio release says that the Blu-ray and DVD both contain a special featurette, “Midnight in Cannes,” and exclusive to the Blu-ray are cast and crew photo galleries.

Netflix splits DVD, streaming services into separate companies

By Sean O’Connell Netflix announced that it is dividing its business model in half, renaming its DVD rental component Qwikster and expanding that side to potentially include video game rentals.
The news was announced by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, who apologized to customers in an honest and open blog post, stating, “It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the separation of DVD and streaming, and the price changes. That was certainly not our intent, and I offer my sincere apology.”
More from Hastings’ informative post:
Many members love our DVD service, as I do, because nearly every movie ever made is published on DVD, plus lots of TV series. We want to advertise the breadth of our incredible DVD offering so that as many people as possible know it still exists, and it is a great option for those who want the huge and comprehensive selection on DVD. DVD by mail may not last forever, but we want it to last as long as possible.
I also love our streaming service because it is integrated into my TV, and I can watch anytime I want. The benefits of our streaming service are really quite different from the benefits of DVD by mail. We feel we need to focus on rapid improvement as streaming technology and the market evolve, without having to maintain compatibility with our DVD by mail service.
So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are becoming two quite different businesses, with very different cost structures, different benefits that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently. It’s hard for me to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary and best: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster.”
As Hastings revealed, there will be no further increases to pricing, which should please subscribers. How about investors, though? The Washington Post says the company’s stock “was down slightly in pre-market trading.”

Star Wars Blu-ray early access App now available

By G. Clay Whittaker “Star Wars: The Complete Saga” will be available on Blu-ray in stores Sept. 16, right in time for some back-to-school marathons and end-of-summer drinking games. But if you can’t even wait that long, this treat for iDevice owners will make for hours of entertainment.
As part of the massive rollout for the “Star Wars” Blu-ray release, fans with iPhones and iPads can download a free app filled with tons of content to whet their appetites.
It’s great stuff for fans that want to go behind the scenes. Blu-ray isn’t really about the films; the die-hard fans are still wearing out that old VHS, and if they’ve upgraded to DVD they treat the disc with an archivists care. Blu-ray is about delivery potential for everything that makes for a richer experience: artwork, prop and costume scans, interviews and a lot of other gems worth investigating.
And the App is an accessible, touch-screen preview of all of that new material. Early screenshots look stellar, and the App is already available for iPad users (sorry iPhone, you have to wait until August 2). It’s a wonderful product for old fans and young ones alike, because a lot of this stuff just isn’t available anywhere.
Download on the iPad today, the iPhone in just a couple of weeks, and if you happen to be going to Comic-Con, they’ll have a display up at booth #3528 with iPads and the Blu-rays for a sample of what’s to come in September.

“Star Wars” promises big reveal on May the 4th

By Sean O’Connell In “Star Wars” speak, May 4 carries significant weight. Say it aloud. May the 4th. Sounds just like “May the Force,” as in, “May the Force be with you.”
Not the date’s going to stand for … well, for something.
An e-mail that just arrived in our inbox proclaimed that, on behalf of the “Star Wars” franchise, “All will be revealed” on May 4.
All of what? We’re assuming it has something to do with the pending release of the complete “Star Wars” saga on Blu-ray, as was previous announced.
Perhaps Fox plans to reveal the specifics in terms of supplements, director’s cuts, and more that “Star Wars” die hard can expect to find on the Blu-ray discs?
Whatever it is, it’s important enough for Fox to reserve a Web site and establish a countdown clock. Check it out here, and view the teaser photo we received below.
