Marvel’s The Avengers midnight gross

HollywoodNews.com: The unofficial midnight gross for Marvel’s The Avengers is $18.7 million. That’s the eighth-biggest such midnight haul on record. The seven ahead of it are The Hunger Games ($19.7 million), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($22 million), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part I ($24 million), The Twilight Saga: New Moon ($26 million), The Twilight Saga: Eclipse ($30 million), The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn part I ($30 million), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part II ($43 million). Obviously The Avengers was never going to top the midnight-grossers list, and its worth noting that the film earned more on its midnight debut that pretty much every prior Marvel Studios movie combined (Offhand, Thor earned $3.5 million, Captain America earned $4 million, and Iron Man 2 earned $7.5 million in their respective midnight debuts). It’s a larger midnight, just barely and likely due to inflation and the 3D-price bump, then The Dark Knight, which broke a midnight record four years ago with $18.5 million on its way to a $67 million opening day and a $158 million opening weekend (both records at the time).

Unless the film is front-loaded on the level of a Harry Potter sequel or a Twilight sequel, we’re looking at a $140-160 million debut here. But is the three-day record still in play? Let’s whip out the calculator!

“Twilight” DVD “Breaking Dawn” notches great sales figures

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: “Breaking Dawn” is coming close to breaking “Twilight” DVD records, hitting – and subsequently flying off of – shelves.
Summit Entertainment announced that the home entertainment release of “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” sold an estimated 3.2 million DVD and Blu-ray units during its first weekend of release.
According to a release, DVD sales for the film are roughly 18% ahead of the opening weekend of the third film in the franchise, “Eclipse.” The film also performed well via digital platforms, notching approximately 50,000 Electronic Sell Through transactions, a 47% increase over its predecessor; and approximately 80,000 Video on Demand transactions, a 142% increase over ECLIPSE.
“The incredible fan support for the characters and story that author Stephenie Meyer has created never ceases to impress,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger in a statement. “We thank all of the fans for continuing their journey with us beyond the big screen and look forward to bringing you ‘Breaking Dawn: Part 2’ later this year.”
More from the release:

Breaking Dawn Part I gets “final” posters

HollywoodNews.com: I’m a little busy today, so I’m using this ‘straight from the horses’ mouth’ press release worth of posters as a lazy attempt to drum up hits. Anyway, enjoy and I’ll hopefully have something more substantial later in the weekend.

Taylor Lautner unable to escape “Twilight,” Robert Pattinson

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Poor Taylor Lautner. Despite showing up to an MTV awards show sans the “Twilight” crew, Lautner’s brief black carpet interview with MTV correspondent James Montgomery focused on a question about Robert Pattinson. Lautner was attending the awards as a presenter, and to promote his new movie, “Abduction,” which releases on September 23rd. But, before he could get a word in edgewise about his film, Montgomery questioned Taylor about his ubiquitous “Twilight” co-star.
“I don’t know if you kissed, or were kissed by Mr. Robert Pattinson…” Montgomery began, alluding to a moment shared by Pattinson and Lautner at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. It came during an acceptance speech by Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who won yet another “Best Kiss” for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” Taylor Lautner was a nominee for the same award, for a kiss he shared with Kristen Stewart for the same movie. As a joke, Pattinson ran into the crowd and planted a kiss on Lautner.
“I was definitely kissed by [Robert Pattinson],” Lautner clarified, as Montgomery continued for precious seconds along those lines, leaving no time for Lautner to speak about his upcoming film.
The irony endures. Pattinson’s kiss during the MTV Movie Awards seemed an attempt to recognize Lautner for his work in the “Twilight” films, given repeated MTV Movie Awards nominations (and repeated losses to none other than Pattinson himself). Yet, even months later, it seems that Pattinson’s gesture has given the press more excuses to grill Lautner about Pattinson. Let’s hope that the release of “Abduction” gives Lautner some of the solo recognition he deserves.

Is Robert Pattinson recording new music?

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: He was seen several times at a Los Angeles recording studio last week. Could Robert Pattinson be working on a piece of music? It’s not a stretch—in addition to playing piano and guitar, the actor has been known to sing and write music.
He did, in fact, sing on the “Twilight” soundtrack, accompanying himself on the guitar with “Never Think” and “Let Me Sign.” Already, some are speculating that Pattinson’s recording sessions have to do with the soundtracks of the two “Breaking Dawn” films. However, similar reports arose prior to the release of the “New Moon” and “Eclipse” soundtracks, neither of which ultimately featured Pattinson or his music.

A glance at the Fall Movie Season

HollywoodNews.com: When we pundits and critics wring our hands about the death of original cinema, we are frankly talking mostly about the big-budget tent-poles and/or genre films that are released by major studios. In truth, there are plenty of films that qualify as original that are released year-round. We obsess on the remakes and reboots because they generally fall in the film-nerd-friendly genres that we obsess over.
But there are plenty of original films out there for those who want to obsess on more than just the comic book adaptations, the animated films, and the sci-fi and horror genres. Of the 98 films coming out between September and December (according to this week’s Entertainment Weekly ‘Fall Movie Preview’), only eighteen would theoretically qualify as a sequel, a remake, franchise revamp, or spin-off of a known property. They are -
In September, we have just the re-release of The Lion King in 3D, plus the Rod Lurie remake of Straw Dogs. In October, we have a Footloose remake, a prequel to The Thing, Paranormal Activity 3, a 3D-revamp of The Three Musketeers, and Johnny English Reborn. As we get into the holiday season, November brings us the Shrek spin-off Puss in Boots, A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas, Happy Feet Two, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn part I, The Muppets, and Piranha 3DD. Finally, December brings us New Year’s Eve (technically a spin-off to last year’s Valentine’s Day), Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, David Fincher’s remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and Brad Bird’s Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
Assuming I didn’t miss anything, that’s one re-release, one prequel, two spin-offs, two franchise revamps, three remakes, and nine sequels. That gives us just 18% of the film releases during the last third of the year that don’t qualify as at least somewhat original (by which we mean either completely original or adapted from a book, a play, or some other medium).

“Twilight” star arrested on outstanding warrant

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Actor Kiowa Gordon, who played wolfpack member Embry Call in “Eclipse,” “New Moon,” and who will reprise the role in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn” was arrested in Mesa, AZ for failure to appear in court in relation to an earlier charge. The actor pled guilty earlier this year to possession and use of drug paraphernalia and giving liquor to a minor/underage consumption in a Scottsdale court; the original charge also involved a DUI.
Records from the arresting Sherriff’s department linked Gordon to two other cases involving drugs and drug paraphernalia. At the time of his arrest, the actor was held on $1,000 bond.
