Daniel Craig wants a raise from Sony

This one is pretty simple. Daniel Craig allegedly (Hollywood Reporter) wants a raise for his appearance in Sony’s planned The Girl Who Played With Fire. Sony is refusing and may even be trying to wrangle a pay cut. Sony is allegedly digging its heels out of the desire to cut costs, as the first film grossed $232 million worldwide yet still barely broken even due to its frankly absurd $90 million budget. Had the film cost a more reasonable $60-$70 million, it would have been quite profitable for Sony. But it didn’t so it wasn’t. If we must see the two other chapters in the original series, then they damn-well shouldn’t cost nearly $100 million apiece. You could argue that Rooney Mara is an essential component of any sequel and should be hired even at a token higher cost this time around. But everyone else involved is expendable. Daniel Craig, whose character was as bland a male lead as you can ask for, is not a box office draw, period. If Sony sees fit to write out his journalist protagonist, I imagine it won’t affect the film’s financial fortunes one iota. Daniel Craig is one of countless actors who do just fine in a marquee role or a popular franchise but flounder elsewhere. If Daniel Craig wants a raise from Sony, he is welcome to ask for one for the next James Bond film. But outside of the 007 series, Daniel Craig isn’t a box office draw, period.

Sheryl Crow reveals possible cause of brain tumor

HollywoodNews.com: Sheryl Crow recently revealed that she is suffering from a brain tumor, and now she might know the cause of it.
Crow spoke with Katie Couric about how cell phone use may have led to her brain tumor, states TMZ. Although doctors have not confirmed anything, Crow believes she sees a link.
“I do have the theory that it’s possible that it’s related to [cell phone use] … [in the] early early days when I was promoting my first record, I did hours of phoners on the old archaic cell phones,” Crow commented.
Crow has a benign tumor the size of her pinky that is not necessarily serious but does have to be monitored.
Do you think her cell phone is related to the cause?

Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris” reveals DVD release date – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell
hollywoodnews.com: Oscar hopefuls released earlier in the year – i.e., not in November and December – face a serious challenge on staying on voters’ radars, so it’s interesting to see contenders like “The Help” and now “Midnight In Paris’ capitalize by grabbing key December dates for their DVD releases.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced that Woody Allen’s summer hit will reach DVD and Blu-ray on Dec. 20, just in time to remind people how much they enjoyed Owen Wilson’s whimsical journey around after-dark Paris.
The film, which opened this year’s Cannes Film Festival, was a tremendous success for Allen. It became his highest-grossing film over the summer, posting $55.4 million in domestic ticket sales. It also earned fantastic reviews, earning a staggering 93% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Depending on which Oscar trackers you follow, “Midnight” and Allen are in the running for Best Picture and Director Oscars, and a DVD release date in laet December will only help the film’s campaign.
A studio release says that the Blu-ray and DVD both contain a special featurette, “Midnight in Cannes,” and exclusive to the Blu-ray are cast and crew photo galleries.

“Bridesmaids,” “Star Wars” lead this weekend’s top rentals

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris Hemsworth and a certain Jedi named Luke Skywalker await you this weekend. Looking for something decent to rent? We’ve got you covered:
“Star Wars: The Complete Saga”
Hands down the most buzzed-about Blu-ray release of 2011, more for what it changes than for what it improves. Which is unfair, because even die-hard “Star Wars” fans screaming “Noooooooooo!” at the alterations George Lucas is making to his beloved sci-fi franchise are backtracking and admitting that the conversion to Blu-ray is spectacular.
20th Century Fox and LucasFilm reportedly hit it out of the park with this multi-disc set. If you can get past the endless gushing, Harry Knowles writes an impassioned speech about the various deleted scenes in the “Star Wars” set, which brings all six of Lucas’ films to Blu-ray for the first time. If you happen to know a Star Wars” fanatic and are wondering where they are this weekend, chances are they’re camped in front of a hi-def television set, nitpicking every little detail of the “Star Wars” trilogies … and absolutely loving every minute of it.

“Bridesmaids”
Still one of the funniest films I’ve seen this year, Paul Feig’s “Bridesmaids” hits DVD and Blu-ray this week in an unrated package from Universal. “Saturday Night Live” standouts Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph play best friends caught in a tidal wave of hilarious disappointment as Annie (Wiig) tries to throw Lillian (Rudolph) an unforgettable bridal shower. Wiig’s brilliant timing and outstanding support from Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper make “Bridesmaids” a must see. Stay for the extended and deleted scenes, the gag reel, and the feature commentary track with the cast and crew.

“Thor: Limited Edition 3D”
You haven’t seen the son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins) until you’ve seen him on Blu-ray. Marvel continues its mighty superhero prequels with an origin story for Thor (Chris Hemsworth) arrogant Norse god who is banished to Earth where he meets his true love (Natalie Portman) and learns the value of his lineage. We’re paying close attention because Kenneth Branagh’s weighty drama – along with Joe Johnston’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” – sets the stage for Joss Whedons’ ensemble adventure “The Avengers,” in theaters next summer. To that end, Paramount’s spectacular “Thor” Blu-ray boasts a clever short film with Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) that bridges Marvel’s story gaps, seven in-depth featurettes, 11 deleted scenes, previews for “Avengers,” [...]

London riots destroy Sony DVD and CD depot

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Riots and looting in London have affected all walks of life in Britain’s capital city. Late last night, on the third night of violent unrest, London’s entertainment options started to respond to the unrest.
Several movie houses around London were shuttered for the evening in response to the outbursts. In addition, Wednesday night’s friendly soccer match pitting England against Holland was postponed. Worts of all, Sony’s depot for CDs and DVDs, it’s only facility for such storage in the U.K. was “raised to the ground,” according to THR, which is bound to have a ripple effects across the nation’s entertainment sharing platforms.
A Sony spokeswoman told Sky News “the burnt out three-storey 20,000 square meter site would almost certainly impact on delivery of CDs and DVDs to retailers and consumers alike. The fire was still burning Tuesday lunchtime so the full extent of the damage was still being assessed.”
And while some theaters closed for patron and employee safety, managers said it would be back to business today.
“We are planning at the moment is to open our doors at the cinemas and show the scheduled films as normal,” a spokesman said. “It’s very fluid and it all depends on what happens of course.”

Movie Awards’ Projections For August: Contenders for the 2011 Awards Season – AWARDS ALLEY

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: With “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” tearing up box office records and the last of the summer blockbusters preparing to drop — “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” appears to be the last major tent pole on the horizon — now seems like a safe time to start winding down from the muscular summer movie season so we can get in mental, emotional and physical shape for the autumn season. PLEASE SCROLL DOWN FOR LIST OF SELECTED FILMS.
That’s when studios begin to position their awards hopefuls for lengthy Oscar-season campaigns, which can begin as early as August at the Venice Film Festival and extend all the way to the Academy Awards on Feb. 26, 2012.
At the early stage of the annual game, the field of contenders is massive. The fun, each year, comes in whittling down a pool of potential to find the pictures we hope can find their into the Oscar race. And with the added wrinkle of an undetermined number of Best Picture nominees (the Academy did away with 10 noms in favor of an as-many-as-we-need system), the debate surrounding worthy titles should be passionate.
We can’t wait. So we won’t wait. We’re gearing up for the annual awards race by amassing the movies we think will be in the discussion. Some we have seen already, though most are opening between now and New Year’s Eve, making them eligible for Academy consideration in 2011. This will be a straight list. We’ll get to commentary (lots and lots of commentary) as the season moves along … especially after we’ve been able to see the movies on this initial list.
Be sure to bookmark HollywoodNews.com for the best awards coverage the industry has to offer. This isn’t a sprint. It’s a marathon. And while we’re pretty much just lacing up our running shoes at this point, we know the finish line is out there somewhere, and we’re getting pretty excited about crossing it.
