The Oscars® were no enormous shame, a few good jokes, no great shocks

I’m a big fan of Ellen DeGeneres and her understated, often brilliant humor. This was most evident when she hosted the 2001 Emmy Awards after the horrific events in New York and Washington that year. The show was postponed twice, and when it finally aired a couple of months later the big question was how it could be entertaining?
Almost from the outset Ellen delivered. To paraphrase what she said, it was something like the terrorists could not break our spirit. Then she paused and deadpanned that only network executives could do that.

It was funny, unexpected yet absolutely true. It related to the events just passed, but broke the ice and allowed the show to go on to its true purpose after the long delay.

The Oscars Rate a B-Minus.
I wish I could say Ellen’s performance last night rose to that occasion. Though it generally retained the dignity and glamour that audiences expect, something lost in last year’s show hosted by Seth MacFarlane, it was mostly bland with repetitive jokes and occasional good moments. Having said that, I cringed a bit when Ellen repeated out loud and very slowly a compliment to Nebraska supporting actress nominee June Squibb, whom Ellen had termed the oldest Oscar nominee ever, as if the actress were almost deaf and needed careful attention to hear her remarks.

Throughout the ABC show, Ellen drew from a past playbook and redid bits from the last time she hosted in 2007, often appearing in the audience, talking with this celebrity or that and taking photos. In one segment she asked if anyone was hungry, which drew very few responses and went on much too long. However, when a pizza man arrived later in the show, though only with three pizzas, it was amusing to see how many celebrities accepted a slice, including Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts and Harrison Ford. And that no one initially responded to Ellen’s request for donations to pay the man.

I’d thought sometime later it would have been funny if the delivery man, denied payment, started taking back the pizza slices from Meryl, Julia and the others. However, they eventually paid the bit off when Ellen passed a hat into which producer Harvey Weinstein threw two hundred dollars and several celebrities forked over twenty or more dollars each. By my count that was over three hundred [...]

Bethenny Frankel talks about her upcoming talk show

HollywoodNews.com: It was recently revealed that Bethenny Frankel would be taking on a talk show, and it seems she has Ellen DeGeneres to partly thank for it.
Frankel’s talk show will be starting up this summer, and it’ll be hard for it to not do well because DeGeneres will be producing it, states RadarOnline.com. “I am so excited you have been so behind me for so long and so supportive and just so mellow,” Frankel said about DeGeneres’ help.
But DeGeneres isn’t worried about Frankel’s new challenge: “You are going to be great because I think you talk about a lot of stuff that a lot of women can relate to.”

Ellen DeGeneres on overturn of Prop 8, women boycotting her

HollywoodNews.com: Ellen DeGeneres took some time on her show to address some very serious matters that have been going on in her life these days.
DeGeneres both addressed the overturning of Prop 8 in California and the group of moms who are boycotting JC Penney because she is their current spokeswoman, states RadarOnline.com. “I’m sure the people who oppose it will try to appeal it, but it’s a step in the right direction, so I’m happy,” DeGeneres said about the Prop 8 matter.
And while she is upset with the One Million Moms who are against her, there is something good in this: “They wanted to get me fired and I’m proud and happy to say that JC Penney stuck by their decision to make me their spokesperson.”
Are you as happy as her about recent decisions?

Ellen DeGeneres gives ‘Bachelor’ hard time for dating choice

HollywoodNews.com: Ellen DeGeneres has a bone to pick with the current ‘Bachelor,’ Ben Flajnik, and she didn’t hold back as he recently appeared on her daytime talk show.
DeGeneres took up her issues with Flajnik in regard to the model Courtney who is currently still in the running and stirring up some trouble, states UsMagazine.com. “She manipulated you to try and get that rose. She said, ‘Oh, I don’t know how I feel.’ Then you went and got the rose and gave it to her. That was not right,” DeGeneres complained about the most recent episode.
But the talk show host still wants the best for the bachelor: “I’m going to find you a nice girl, ’cause that didn’t work!”

Bethenny Frankel’s talk show backed by…Ellen DeGeneres?

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Looks like one of Bethenny Frankel’s greatest supporters is talk show host and comedienne, Ellen DeGeneres. According to GossipCop, DeGeneres “will generate interest and excitement for Frankel’s upcoming show by having her as a regular guest next year.” Not only will Ellen use her personal brand to boost Frankel’s profile—Ellen’s own producers, Mary Connelly, Ed Glavin, and Andy Lassner are backing Frankel as she tapes her show’s pilot.
Said Frankel to The Hollywood Reporter of her decision to pursue the talk show format, “I want to be on TV in a format where I can have a longer conversation with my fans rather than 140 characters on Twitter.”
