Universal teases The Flintstones a year in advance…

By Scott Mendelson
HollywoodNews.com: It was no secret that Universal was planning a big-screen adaptation of The Flintstones for the summer of 1994. I remember actually being on the Universal lot while visiting a cousin in the winter of 1993 so I could shoot portions of a Bar Mitzvah movie (long story… another time) and being told by the Universal guy that if we got caught to say “We’re here working on stuff for The Flintstones… nobody knows what the plot is yet anyway.” But a six months later, as my dad and I watched the lights go down for our advance-night 10:00pm screening of Jurassic Park (arguably the best single movie going experience of my life… ask me about it next summer), we were stunned that Universal had already cooked up a teaser for the seemingly un-shot and certainly unfinished Flintstones feature. As you can see, it was basically just a bouncing ball version of the theme song, climaxing with an in-costume John Goodman screaming ‘Yabba-dabba-doo!’ at the top of his lungs. Let me tell you, the entire audience roared with applause and I admit I was caught up in the infectious excitement for a project I couldn’t really care less about. That was the start of something new.
I saw that preview on June 10th, 1993, just under a full year before the May 27th, 1994 Memorial Day weekend release date. I’m sure there were cases in the 1970s and early 1980s of big movies being teased well in advance because they weren’t being released wide to every theater at the same time. But in the wide-release, ‘coming soon to theaters everywhere’ era, this was a first. It was a calculated marketing campaign that started a year before the film was to be released. The Flintstones were the first to try such a long-dart shot, but they were not the last. Sony debuted the first Godzilla teaser with Men In Black over the 4th of July weekend in 1997, just under a year before the film’s Memorial Day 1998 debut (ironically, they would not debut a real trailer until April 3rd, 1998, attached to prints of Mercury Rising, just 6 weeks before the film’s release). Disney debuted a powerful and moving teaser for Pearl Harbor a year before its Memorial Day 2001 release, attached to prints of I [...]

Warner Bros hides Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows…

HollywoodNews.com: There’s a new Tim Burton coming out from Warner Bros. in just over two months. Aside from a couple stills and some half-hearted interview statements from the cast and Mr. Burton, we haven’t heard or seen a thing from it. No posters, no trailers, no TV spots, nothing. It’s October of 1996, and I’m of course referring to Mars Attacks!. Many of my readers are too young to remember way-back-when, but the near-absence of marketing materials for Tim Burton’s $80 million private-joke (which today plays like half-blockbuster deconstruction and half-right wing political fantasy) was a source of frustration for a 16-year old Tim Burton fan who was eagerly awaiting that first preview. Today we stand in the same boat with another Warner Bros-funded Tim Burton ‘comedy’. But just over fifteen years later, what was a source of frustration is now a pleasant surprise.
Nine weeks to go, and I really don’t need to see an onslaught of spoiler-filled marketing materials for the upcoming Dark Shadows. Ten weeks to go, and I have absolutely no idea what kind of film Tim Burton and his merry band have delivered. I don’t know what it looks like, what the tone is, or all-that much about the plot. And in this era of ‘spoil the movie a year in advance’, that’s a special thing indeed.
Whether because Warner Bros. didn’t know how to sell the sci-fi horror/comedy or because they saw the writing on the wall and tried to limit their financial losses, the studio waited until 4 weeks prior to release to unleash that first Mars Attacks! trailer. Attached to Space Jam, the 2.5-minute trailer was pretty much all we saw of the film in America, aside from a TV spot or two until Thanksgiving weekend, when Warner Bros. held a national sneak preview. I attended that sneak preview, loved the hell out of the movie, and spent the next two weeks trying (in vain) to convince friends and peers that it was absolutely worth checking out. But, in retrospect, it was a pretty stupid idea for Warner Bros to sneak a genuine cult film so that the few die-hards could see it two weeks early and not contribute one dime to the box office (all ticket sales went to Space Jam, which played for free afterward). But come [...]

The Hunger Games: Lionsgate releases a spoiler-free second trailer

By Scott Mendelson
HollywoodNews.com: I have now seen three Hunger Games previews, the teaser, the wonderful full trailer from a few months ago, and now this 69-second second trailer. And I still know next-to-nothing about how the film plays out.
I know the concept, I know large chunks of the first and second act, and I know some of the actors I can expect to see. Other than that, nadda. No mega-money shots from the climax, no thrill-spilling montage, no expository narration or on-screen text. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you market a would-be franchise. You explain the core story, you tease a character relationship or two, offer a few tantalizing bits and pieces, and you get out. This final teaser, combined with the news that the film will play in IMAX for the first week of release, is a sign that Lionsgate feels it has the goods and can deliver not just to the fans of the source material but to general audiences as well. The Hunger Games opens on March 32rd.
As always, we’ll see… Oh, and the IMAX press release is after the jump.

Snow White revamp “Mirror Mirror” moves its date

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: We have two Snow White stories in the pipeline for 2012, and for a while, they were trying to create as much space between them as physically possible. Now they’re moving just a little closer, from a release-date perspective.
Relativity announced in a release that Tarsem Singh’s “Mirror Mirror,” a comedic take on the classic fairy tale, has moved its release back two weeks, from March 16 to March 30. While the move might give Singh some time to tighten up his finished film, it also puts its in direct competition with the anticipated 3D sequel “Wrath of the Titans.”
It also moves it a bit closer to its Snow White rival, Kristen Stewart’s “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which reaches theaters on June 1.
Does it matter? Not likely. Based on existing trailers, the two Snow White projects couldn’t be more different in tone. And both will attract their respective audiences. “Mirror” fans just will have to wait a tad bit longer until they can see Lily Collins, Julia Roberts and Armie Hammer on screen.

Elizabeth Banks narrates the “Man On a Ledge” trailer – MUST SEE

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: More studios (and their marketing departments) need to try this: Elizabeth Banks, clever and beautiful star of this weekend’s “Man On a Ledge,” watches the film’s trailer and gives a running commentary.
Brilliant.
Banks doesn’t get into too many details. And if anything, I think she holds back on really unleashing her hilarious opinions. If you’ve seen Banks on “30 Rock” or “Scrubs,” you know she can be fall-down funny.
And right around the 1:45 mark, when she starts talking about how badly she still wants to “tap” her handsome co-star Ed Harris, you start to think that Banks is going to rev up and get really funny. Too bad the clip is so short.
We can only hope the DVD comes with a feature-length Banks commentary.
Until then, here’s Banks commenting on her new film, “Man On a Ledge,” while watching the trailer. It sounds so simple. And yet, it’s so clever. The movie stars Sam Worthington, Jamie Bell, Ed Harris, Elizabeth Banks and Ed Burns in the story of an ex-cop who plans a heist so he can prove to the world that he’s innocent of a serious crime. It opens everywhere on Friday, Jan. 27.

Elizabeth Olsen in first “Silent House” trailer

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Elizabeth Olsen turned so many heads with her gripping performance in “Martha Marcy May Marlene” that most of us are waiting to see what he has to offer next. Turns out, it will be “Silent House,” a U.S. remake of a Uruguayan horror film. The first trailer made its way online today (via Yahoo Movies). We have it posted below.
“Open Waters” collaborators Chris Kentis and Laura Lau co-directed “Silent House,” which stars Olsen as Laura, a young woman slowly going insane while trapped inside her family’s crumbling lake house. “With no electricity and no contact to the outside world, events throughout the house become increasingly frightening and bloody,” the plot synopsis explains.
Adam Trese, Eric Sheffer Stevens, Julia Taylor Ross, Haley Murphy and Adam Barnett co-star in “Silent House.” But there’s a gimmick, which is clear in the trailer. “House” was filmed in one shot, much like Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rope.” Can it live up to the hype of its trick?
“Silent House” hits theaters on March 9. What do you think of the trailer?
