Tell me you wouldn’t pay to see a “Happy Gilmore,” “Waterboy” or “Billy Madison” sequel, possibly catching up with these buffoons years after their original stories to see where they are in life? Just not “Little Nicky,” please. Once was enough.

Instead, however, Sandler reportedly plans to do a sequel to “Grown Ups,” the massively successful comedy that teamed the “SNL” star up with his close friends and fellow comedians Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade and Rob Schneider.

Variety says Sony has begun negotiations with “Grown Ups” scribe Fred Wolf to pen a sequel. The key, of course, would be getting all five guys back, but if Sandler says yes, you can bet the rest will hop on the bandwagon.

A sequel seemed inevitable. “Grown Ups” grossed a whopping $271 million in 2010. But all of Sandler’s films break the bank, and he hasn’t had to go to the sequel well before.

Maybe he just had a lot of fun working on that film? Maybe they have a solid idea for a second film? Either way, we’ll keep you posted on the progress.

Hollywood News on Twitter for up-to-date news information.

Hollywood News, Hollywood Awards, Awards, Movies, News, Award News, Breaking News, Entertainment News, Movie News, Music News

Katie Holmes to amp her comedic-timing with Adam Sandler, Al Pacino

*NEWS

BEHIND THE SCENES

adam sandler

Adam Sandler-Al Pacino

Al Pacino

American film directors

Awards Movies News Award

Big Daddy

Cinema of the United States

comedian

Dennis Dugan

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Entertainment

Entertainment/Culture

famed first lady

film

Grown Ups

guillermo del toro

happy madison

Happy Madison productions

History Channel

Hollywood Reporter

Human Interest

Jack

Jack and Jill

Jackie Kennedy Onassis

Jill

Katie Holmes

News Hollywood Awards

Sony Corporation

Thanksgiving

the hollywood reporter

Twitter Inc

USD

HollywoodNews.com: Katie Holmes has scored a female lead in the upcoming Adam Sandler-Al Pacino comedy “Jack and Jill.” The Sony film will be [...]

HollywoodNews.com: Katie Holmes has scored a female lead in the upcoming Adam Sandler-Al Pacino comedy “Jack and Jill.”

The Sony film will be directed by Dennis Dugan, who is behind many of Sandler’s biggest hits including this summer’s “Grown Ups” ($159 million) and the comedian’s biggest grosser, 1999’s “Big Daddy” ($163 million).

Sandler will play a twin brother and sister who are at odds with each other over Thanksgiving. Holmes will play the wife to one of Sandler’s characters. Pacino is set to appear as himself. The film goes before the cameras in October and will be produced by Sandler’s Happy Madison production label.

The Hollywood Reporter landed the news.

Holmes has a long list of films opening in the near future including “The Romantics,” a romantic drama; “The Son of No One,” a crime thriller and the Guillermo del Toro-production, “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” which Miramax is bowing on Jan. 21.

In addition, Holmes will be seen in The History Channel’s miniseries “The Kennedys” as the famed first lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

pd

Photo href="http://www.hollywoodnews.com">HollywoodNews.com: There’s usually a life expectancy for a “Saturday Night Live” alum at the box office, however, Adam Sandler is showing signs of beating that.

With his summer sleeper “Grown Ups,” about to chalk up $160 million, the comedian is seeing his best run at the B.O. in more than a decade.

The Los Angeles Times analyzes the comedy’s gross:

That’s four times its opening-weekend take, a very high multiple that indicates word of mouth on the film about high school friends who reunite in middle age has been unusually good.

Sandler hasn’t enjoyed a multiple that good on any of his trademark PG-13 comedies since 1998′s “The Waterboy” and 1999′s “Big Daddy,” both of which had box-office performances nearly identical to “Grown Ups.”

That’s amazing for a “SNL” alum who left the show 15 years ago in 1995. Typically due to waning tastes in comedy, and the emergence of fresh “SNL” talent on the screen, young male moviegoers turn their back on the titans. Recently, that hasn’t been the case as audiences turned their noses up to “MacGruber” starring current SNLers Will Forte and Kristen Wiig. The May comedy tanked making $8.5 million. A similar situation occurred with 2007′s “Hot Rod,” an Andy Samberg vehicle which only made $13.9 million at the August B.O.

It’s all a testament to Sandler’s strength as an actor, writer and producer. He knows the guffaws which moviegoers want. Like Stallone, who assembled, vintage action stars in this weekend’s No. 1 film, “The Expendables,” Sandler brought together his old “SNL” buddies Chris Rock, Rob Schneider and David Spade – making it more of a must-see film. Sony and Relativity Media, who financed “Grown Ups” spent from $70-$80 million on the film and it’s set to turn a decent profit.

Arguably, Chevy Chase’s hot streak at the B.O. lasted for 13 years after he departed the hit NBC sketch show in 1976. Chase hit his B.O. high with 1989’s “Christmas Vacation” ($71.3 million) before his grosses slid him into character actor work. Bill Murray also enjoyed a 13-year ride as a B.O. star after leaving “SNL” in 1980. 1993’s “Groundhog Day” ($70.9 million) was his last star comedy vehicle that did well before they crashed and he morphed into a highly coveted absurdist arthouse star which nabbed him an Oscar nom for 2003’s “Lost in Translation.”

It’s not that Chase and Murray fail to get work; rather they are a different type of star now. It’s highly unlikely that an $80 million-plus summer tentpole will be built solely around their image.

Actually, Eddie Murphy does outstrip Sandler in terms of former “SNL” cast members run at the B.O.: He continues to pump out hits, 26 years after leaving the show. 2007’s “Norbit” came close to reaching $100 million. While still a clown, Murphy had to change his comedy game to get his blockbuster status back, swapping hard R action films for family and urban features.

It’s often said that sometimes it’s a star’s ego that kills their career. Sandler has a reputation for being a down-to-earth guy, who keeps his friends at his side in a town full of sharks. He also remains a godfather of sorts to burgeoning comedians. After stand-up comedian Kevin James left the CBS sitcom “The King of Queens” in 2007, Sandler was key in propelling the actor as a marquee draw: Sandler produced James’ hits “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” and next summer’s comedy “The Zookeeper.”

What makes Sandler the anomaly? When he’s not putting on a serious face, like in last year’s “Funny People,” Sandler continues to rake in the bucks doing the same thing he did back when he made 1995’s “Billy Madison” – being enjoyably goofy.

pd

Follow Hollywood News on Twitter for up-to-date news information.

Hollywood News, Hollywood Awards, Awards, Movies, News, Award News, Breaking News, Entertainment News, Movie News, Music News,

Justin Bieber to perform at Usher’s World Leadership Awards

*NEWS

MUSIC

adam sandler

atlanta

bill clinton

breaking news

Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center

Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta

correspondent

Employment Change

Entertainment news

Entertainment Tonight

Entertainment/Culture

founder

Grown Ups

Hollywood

hollywood news

Human Interest

Justin Bieber

Kevin Frazier

New Look

New Look Alumnus

New Look Foundation

President

Raymond IV

Singers

United States

usher

Usher's New Look Foundation

HollywoodNews.com:Justin Bieber will join Usher and Ciara for a special performance at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta on Friday, [...]

HollywoodNews.com:Justin Bieber will join Usher and Ciara for a special performance at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center in Atlanta on Friday, August 6, 8 pm, in honor of Usher’s New Look Foundation’s first World Leadership Awards. Eight awards will be given throughout the evening to honor individuals and organizations, including President Bill Clinton who will receive the Service Legacy Award.
According to Usher Raymond IV, founder of the New Look Foundation and host of the World Leadership Awards, “I am honored to share the stage with the individuals and organizations we are acknowledging for their recognition of youth as leaders. They share New Look’s understanding that youth are not merely leaders in waiting; they are ready to achieve greatness today.”

Says President Bill Clinton, “Over the course of my life in public service, and now through my Foundation, I have tried to give young people the tools and opportunities to make a difference in their communities and around the world. Usher’s New Look Foundation has excelled in its efforts to inspire the next generation of leaders, and I am pleased the World Leadership Awards will shine a light on those who have given so much to others.”

Emceeing the event will be Kevin Frazier, “Entertainment Tonight” weekend anchor and correspondent, as well as Nadji Jeter, 14-year-old New Look Alumnus 2005-2007, Atlanta native, who has gone on to star in Adam Sandler’s “Grown Ups.”

Award News, Breaking News, Entertainment News, Movie News, Music News, Hollywood News

Does “Toy Story 3″ success guarantee we’ll see a fourth film?

*NEWS

MOVIES

3-d

adam sandler

animation

archer

Brave

Brenda Chapman's "Brave

Buzz

Buzz Lightyear

Cars

Cars 2

Computer-animated films

Connell Hollywoodnews

Despicable Me

Emmeryville

Entertainment/Culture

film

Finding Nemo

Grown Ups

Knight & Day

Luxo Jr.

Mass media

Monsters Inc.

Pixar

reese witherspoon

shrek

Toy Story

Toy Story 2

toy story 3

UP

USD

By Sean O’Connell Hollywoodnews.com: As expected, “Toy Story 3″ retained the top spot at the box office in its second weekend, earning an [...]

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: As expected, “Toy Story 3″ retained the top spot at the box office in its second weekend, earning an impressive $59 million to push its overall domestic cume to an estimated $226.5 million. It edged out Adam Sandler’s ensemble comedy “Grown Ups” ($41 million) and crushed the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz combo comedy “Knight & Day” ($27 million since its Wednesday opening).

After two weeks, “Toy Story 3″ is the seventh-highest-grossing Pixar film, but it soon will soar past “Cars” ($244M) and the second “Toy Story” film ($245M). It’s obviously setting its sights on “Finding Nemo,” which — at $339.7 million — holds the crown as Pixar’s top earner.

Can “Toy Story 3″ top it? Absolutely. The bump in 3-D ticket prices helps. So does positive word of mouth on the sequel, and a veritable lack of family-friendly competition at the box office until Fox’s “Despicable Me” opens in July.

But does the critical and commercial success of “Toy Story 3″ ensure that Pixar will go back to the well for a fourth installment?

The short answer? No. The long answer? It’s unlikely, but certainly possible.

It’s understandable why you’d assume Pixar would crank out another “Toy Story” to meet the obvious need of the general public. Audiences have turned out in droves for another Woody and Buzz adventure, and this film ends with both a satisfying conclusion and a potential story launch with new characters. Plus, studios often belly back up to the family-animation table when crumbs (cash) remains on the table. For the most recent example, see the fourth “Shrek” film. Actually, don’t.

But Pixar typically doesn’t “crank out” films to meet a stated need. If anything, the studio seems like it would pour its profits from the “Toy Story” franchise to develop new, different characters and franchises.

Except a quick peek at Pixar’s slate reveals a handful of sequels. “Cars 2″ is on the production schedule for 2011. A second “Monsters Inc.” has been announced. The only original film Pixar reportedly has in development is Brenda Chapman’s “Brave,” about a feminine, Scottish archer voiced by Reese Witherspoon.

I want to believe Pixar will remain above the cash-grabbing sequel game. And yet, when the studio has caved in and created sequels to their most popular films (the “Toy Story” comedies), they’ve been excellent. So is sequel such a bad word in Emmeryville? “Cars 2″ will go a long way to convincing us that Pixar treats each of its sequels as they would an original story. Right now, my faith is in the animation studio. They have earned it. But sooner or later, they’re going to have to start behaving like the rest of their mediocre competition.

Right?

Awards News, Breaking News, Entertainment News, Movie News, Hollywood News

Adam Sandler worries about his spoiled kids, entertains them in princess gowns

*NEWS

CELEBS

Actor

adam sandler

Cinema of the United States

comedian

Comedy

Entertainment

Entertainment/Culture

Grown Ups

Human Interest

Movie Release

PRINCESS

Showbiz Spy

Hollywoodnews.com: In Adam Sandler’s new movie “Grown Ups,” the comedian plays a power Hollywood agent with two bratty kids. However, “Toy Story 3” remains the big cheese at the multiplex having already collected $18 million yesterday for the top spot at the B.O this weekend. Nonetheless, here’s your Hollywood Movie Roundup:

KNIGHT AND DAY

As riveting as some of the action scenes look in this James Mangold directed film, you can’t help but notice how it reeks of middle-age. Once upon a time, this film would have owned a summer weekend. With tracking in the gutter, Fox went into spin mode, released the film on a Wednesday to avoid competition (which isn’t the worse idea considering July 4th is just around the corner) and sneaked the action title last Saturday to positive word of mouth. The plot focuses on an everyday blonde woman played by Diaz who becomes wrapped up, against her will, in the global exploits of a potential rogue CIA agent played by Cruise.

Critics are literally split on this film with a 53% rotten rating on the Tomatometer. Critics such as the L.A. Times’ Kenneth Turan (who hates everything LOL) has praised Cruise saying “If you doubt Cruise’s skills in the star department, Knight and Day should make you a believer” to the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Morgenstern griping “Knight and Day woke me up to just how awful some summer entertainments have become. It isn’t that the film is harmful, except to moviegoers’ wallets and movie lovers’ morale, but that it is truly phenomenal for the purity of its incoherence.”

In all, this film looks to slot third on the charts with a 5-day domestic gross of $27 million which is pathetic considering that the budget is a lofty $117 million and that some time, long ago, the average Tom Cruise vehicle would take in a $20 million-plus gross in two days.

GROWN UPS

Talk about longevity. Now, here’s a guy, also middle aged, who won’t slide at the box office: Adam Sandler’s all-star comedy “Grown Ups” looks to take $40 million in just three days. Should that estimate hold, it will be Sandler’s highest opening in four years since 2006’s “Click,” which also bowed to that same number. The film also stars Kevin James, whom auds are just embracing in the wake of “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” as well as former “Saturday Night Live” alums David Spade, Chris Rock and Rob Schneider.

Film has a low Tomatometer of 11%, but these comedies aren’t for critics. “Grown Ups” follows four friends and their families who reunite over Independence Day weekend for the funeral of their childhood basketball coach. During their time together, the guys realize that they’re still young at heart.

Entertainment Weekly’s Owen Gleiberman is probably the only critic in tune to the audience’s sensibility giving good word with “Diverting enough to get by, ‘Grown Ups’ is Adam Sandler growing up — but not too much.”

Awards News, Breaking News, Entertainment News, Movie News, Music News, Hollywood News

Adam Sandler invited to join The Academy

*NEWS

CELEBS

HEADLINE

HEADLINES

A Christmas Carol

A Love Story

A.I. Those who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2010 to the Academy’s roster of voting members.

“The work of these individuals has been appreciated by moviegoers all around the world,” said Academy President Tom Sherak. “The Academy is proud to invite each and every one of them.”

The Academy’s membership policies would have allowed a maximum of 180 new members in 2010, but as in other recent years, the several branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them. Voting membership in the organization has now held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.

New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception at the Academy’s Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills in September.

The 2010 invitees are:

Actors
Tobin Bell – “Saw,” “The Firm”
Vera Farmiga – “Up in the Air,” “The Departed”
Miguel Ferrer – “Traffic,” “RoboCop”
James Gandolfini – “In the Loop,” “Get Shorty”
Anna Kendrick – “Up in the Air,” “Twilight”
Mo’Nique – “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” “Phat Girlz”
Carey Mulligan – “An Education,” “Public Enemies”
Jeremy Renner – “The Hurt Locker,” “28 Weeks Later”
Ryan Reynolds – “The Proposal,” “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”
LaTanya Richardson Jackson – “Mother and Child,” “Losing Isaiah”
Peter Riegert – “Traffic,” “Crossing Delancey”
Sam Robards – “A.I. Naturally surly and instinctively defensive, they appear most comfortable when surrounded by other comics.

I love listening to the nationally syndicated satellite radio program, “The Opie and Anthony Show.” The hosts regularly invite vicious stand ups as guests, and the sharpest segments feature sarcastic comics like Jim Norton, Bill Burr, Patrice O’Neal, Louis C.K., Robert Kelly, Dane Cook, Rich Vos, or Jay Mohr shredding each other for the good of a joke.

Sandler and his co-stars possess that competitive camaraderie, and “Grown Ups” is at its funniest when the five friends are riffing on each other’s weight, appearance, insecurities, and flaws. Some of the one-liners broken off by Rock, Sandler, and Spade, in particular, are very funny (and, by the looks of the genuine laughter in the cast, unscripted).

Dennis Dugan’s film needed plenty more of those jokey interactions, and a lot less of the toilet humor that chokes away the cleverness and friendly atmosphere of the film’s opening act. Not that I’m surprised. Bathroom jokes have always been Sandler’s preference, and so James must urinate on Spade, Schneider has to get kicked in the balls (twice), and Maria Bello has to spray breast milk in Maya Rudolph’s face. One running joke involves Schneider’s character having sex with a woman old enough to be his grandmother. Another joke suggests Spade had sex with a dog. Not very grown up, is it?

That brings me to another point. “Grown Ups” continues Sandler’s impressive streak of casting incredibly beautiful actresses as his love interests. This guy’s track record is Hall of Fame worthy. On screen, he has dated or been married to Julie Bowen, Winona Ryder, Drew Barrymore, Marisa Tomei, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Emmanuelle Chriqui and, currently, Salma Hayek. At least in “Grown Ups,” he spreads the wealth, so that Rock and James can play house with the lovely Rudolph and Bello, respectively.

It initially struck me that these guys have no business being with such classy, delicate flowers. Then, as a hunky lifeguard approached the bikini-clad beauties at the town water park, one of the girls warned, “Whatever you do, don’t fart.” Ah, well. Apparently these are love connections established somewhere south of heaven. Like in the groin.

Awards News, Breaking News, Entertainment News, Movie News, Hollywood News

David Spade ridicules Twilight “New Moon” on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

*NEWS

MOVIES

TWILIGHT

breaking news

Comedians

Comedy

David Spade

Entertainment news

Entertainment/Culture

Grown Ups

Here

Hollywood

hollywood news

jay leno

kpblog@hollywoodnews.com

new moon

Robert Patterson

Television in the United States

The Maltese Falcon

the tonight show with jay leno

Twitter Inc

By Kim Palacios HollywoodNews.com: During his Tonight Show with Jay Leno appearance, David Spade did what comedians do—he found a target and made [...]

By Kim Palacios

HollywoodNews.com: During his Tonight Show with Jay Leno appearance, David Spade did what comedians do—he found a target and made fun of said target shamelessly. In this case, the target was the Twilight franchise, specifically the events of “New Moon”. Spade jokingly admitted the source of his beef with the films—the release of his own new film, “Grown Ups”, will compete with the release of “Eclipse”.

“Here’s the problem with Twilight—and I gave it a chance, Jay—I watched the last one, and here’s what I saw: Robert Patterson…” (yes, Spade mispronounced Robert’s, name which Leno swiftly corrected after he finished laughing) . Contnued Spade, “He’s a vampire. And he hangs out and hooks up with with a girl who’s really pretty but who wears a wig for some reason…but he just dumps her one day. He just taps out for we-don’t-know-what-reason and he’s just gone. And she’s all freaked out, like a chick…and he never calls her from the afterworld, nor texts. And there’s a cool werewolf that starts hanging out with her, and she’s like ‘cool let’s hang out’. But then later, here come the vampires like ‘babe, let’s go’, like ‘The Fonz’. And she runs away with him…”

To a dedicated fan, the holes in Spade’s assessment of “New Moon” may be glaring or offensive. Yet, Spade’s comments were made in good fun, and for someone not in-the-know he got a few things right.

For up-to-the-minute entertainment news, follow @hollywoodnews on Twitter!

Questions?
