Jack Black, Michael Winterbottom comedy “Bailout” goes to Sony

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Jack Black could use a hit — one where we see him, and not just hear him (as we do in the “Kung Fu Panda” franchise). “The Big Year” wasn’t a big hit. “Bernie” went unseen. “Gulliver’s Travels” should have gone unseen.
Teaming up with Michael Winterbottom, however, could be just what the doctor ordered for Black, who’ll appear in the director’s upcoming comedy “Bailout,” which was just acquired by Sony Pictures Worldwide, THR reports.
Winterbottom’s film adapts Jess Walter’s novel “The Financial Lives of the Poets,” about a 99-percenter who hits rock bottom – broke, unemployed, cheating wife and so on – who must go to extremes to get his life back on track. Shooting on the comedy begins January 2012, with additional cast members announced shortly.
“We’re delighted to partner with Sony on this film,” said Ealing Metro head Will Machin. “They share our enthusiasm for the project and our excitement at the pairing of Michael and Jack in this smart commercial comedy.”

Scrat short attached to “Gulliver’s Travels,” teases “Ice Age” sequel

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: “Ice Age” fans are in for a treat if and when they check out Jack Black’s “Gulliver’s Travels” in theaters over the holidays.
That’s because the original short film “Scrat’s Continental Crack-Up” will be attached to prints of “Travels,” and will star the infamous squirrel chasing after his elusive acorn in 3D.
More from an official release:
The special holiday treat sees Scrat still scrambling after the cursed acorn he’s been craving since the first ‘Ice Age’ film. Only this time, the chase has world-changing consequences. SCRAT’S CONTINENTAL CRACK-UP reveals that these seismic…crack-ups…came about from Scrat’s nutty misadventures.
The short film serves as a tease for a fourthg “Ice Age” movie, titled “Ice Age: Continental Drift,” which arrives in theaters on July 13, 2012. The story, also presentedi n 3D, picks up after Scrat’s continental cataclysm, which triggers the greatest adventure of all for “Ice Age’s” intrepid trio — Manny, Diego, and Sid.
As for 20th Century Fox’s “Gulliver’s Travels,” it arrives in theaters everywhere Dec. 25.

Jack Black used to lie about losing virginity as a youngster

HollywoodNews.com: Funny man Jack Black said he used to lie to his friends and tell them he was no longer a virgin despite being only 10 years old.
The 41-year-old actor, who is starring in new movie Gulliver’s Travels, said he felt the pressure to lie to his friends about his sexual experience as a child.
He said to Britain’s Total Film magazine: “The biggest whopper lie of all – that I was not a virgin. That’s the big lie that everyone tells. No one can admit they are a virgin. I started saying it when I guess I was around 10 years old. Once you hit the double digits you want to feel like you’ve got there. OK… maybe I was 11. Or even 12. Am I lying now? Possibly. Somewhere around there.”
He added: “Let’s say pre-teen. I remember this pretty vividly; people would ask: ‘Have you ever done it?’ And I would say: ‘Yeah, one time.’ Where? ‘An orgy.’ I had no idea how these things worked, so I said: ‘Yeah, I had to pay a nickel to get in and then you could do it.’ They said: ‘Where’s the person?’ ‘She moved to Canada.’ That’s the original real fib to cover up insecurities – that’s what it’s all about.”

By Sean O’Connell

Will it work? It likely will make money, as “Travels” will sail into theaters ion 3D, enjoying an instant ticket bump. This seems like the kind of project that Black can carry with his own unique energy. We’ll find out next month.

Black became wowed by the Jonathan Swift novel upon being introduced to it.
“Of course [I've read it]! Are you kidding me? And let me tell you something, if I hadn’t, I would have never have sent it to you,” says the actor quipping before setting the record straight:
“No, I hadn’t, actually, when I was first offered the project. But I quickly read it and was blown away by it. One of the great masterworks of fantasy and fiction.”
“Gulliver’s Travels” bows December 22 in 3D. The 20th Century Fox film also stars Jason Segel, Amanda Peet, Billy Connolly and T.J. Miller. Rob Letterman of “Monsters vs. Aliens” fame helmed the production; his first live-action title.
