Madagascar 3 wins Weekend Box Office $35.5M

HollywoodNews.com: Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy tank while Madagascar 3 remains strong and Prometheus plummets.
I try to remain somewhat positive about box office, if only to counter the relentless ‘It’s a bomb!’ or ‘Big Star FAILS!’ punditry that makes up much of the box office pundit world. But there is little good news to report about this weekend’s two big releases. The top new release was Warner Bros’ broadway adaptation Rock of Ages. The 80s rock homage pulled in just $15 million.
Now to be fair, while the film’s opening is far below the $27 million debut of Adam Shankman’s last musical, Hairspray in July 2007 as well as the $27 million debut of Mamma Mia! four summers ago, it’s actually the sixth-biggest debut for a modern musical, which shows how rare they are even in a post-Moulin Rouge era (Moulin Rouge opened with $13 million eleven years ago, by the way). It’s a bigger opening that Rent ($10 million), Dreamgirls ($14 million on under 900 screens), Burlesque ($11 million), and Sweeney Todd ($9.3 million on 1,249 screens).

The movie musical stars Julianne Hough (“Burlesque”), with actor/singer Diego Boneta in his feature film debut, Russell Brand (“Arthur,” “Get Him to the Greek”), Oscar® nominee Paul Giamatti (“Cinderella Man”), Academy Award® winner Catherine Zeta-Jones (“Chicago”), Malin Akerman (“The Proposal”) and R&B queen Mary J. “Rock of Ages” trailer attached to “Sherlock Holmes”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Here’s a legitimate reason to get to the theaters early if you’re planning on seeing Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” sequel, “Game of Shadows.” Warner Bros. plans to attach the first trailer for Adam Shankman’s musical “Rock of Ages,” teasing the picture’s June 1, 2012 release date.
Shankman’s adaptation stars Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough (“Footloose”), Malin Akerman, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the story of an up-and-coming glam rocker making his way through the seedy Sunset Strip lifestyle in 1987.
“Ages” is a massive Broadway sensation, and Shankman (“Hairspray”) seems like the right choice to bring it to the big screen.
December’s also a big month for Cruise, who is busy on the “Mission: Impossible” press circuit. But audiences will get double their dose of the action star if and when they check out the “Rock” trailer.
We hope it will be online shortly after the release. Once it’s up, we’ll post the trailer here on the site.

James Marsden in the Spotlight at Savannah Film Fest

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: James Marsden moved to Los Angeles when he was 19 to pursue a career in acting. He’s currently 38.
“So I just realized that I’ve been doing this for half of my life, exactly,” Marsden told me during a casual one-on-one Friday evening.
Those years spent honing his craft explain why organizers at the Savannah Film Festival chose Marsden as the recipient of this year’s Spotlight Award, which was handed to him on stage at Trustees Theater prior to the Director’s Choice screening. A montage of clips highlighting Marsden’s work emphasized his range: Stoic superhero in the “X-Men” trilogy; Easter Bunny guardian in “Hop;” exuberant dance-show host in “Hairspray,” and; henpecked husband pushed to the brink in “Straw Dogs.”
“You won’t find more polar opposites than that,” he says with a laugh. “I do think I have been afforded the opportunity to play in a number of different sandboxes.”
Marsden started acting professionally in 1993. He received ample amounts of support from family and friends. “In the luck department,” he tells me, “everything sort of lined up for me. I didn’t have to go and get an agent. My father knew somebody who was a casting director before I moved to L.A., so I had representation when I moved there. I had two parents who were extremely supportive of me. That’s really lucky. And then beyond that, you have to be prepared, have an ability, and perseverance. You just kind of have to get it, I guess.”
Marsden gets it. He has worked consistently since starting in 1993, balancing TV gigs with feature films. Yet the actor says he never really felt like he “belonged” to the professional acting community until recently.
“I’ve always believed that as soon as you get comfortable, you’re done,” he said. “I’ve come to terms with that a little bit as I’ve gotten older. I’ll tell myself, ‘OK. You’re going to find work. You’re going to be fine.’ But as an actor, you can go at any time. And that drives you, too, that one day you can wake up and they’ll say, ‘OK, we’re done with you. We’ve seen everything.’ And thinking of that is a nightmare. Realistically, I think I’ve gotten to a point where I can relax.”
Not too much, though. He has five films in the pipeline, including the recently wrapped “Robot and Frank” and the 2012 comedy “As Cool [...]

Carson Kressley, Pauley Perrette and more stars will attend AIDS Walk LA

HollywoodNews.com: Approximately 30,000 people are expected to fill the streets of West Hollywood on Sunday for the 27th Annual AIDS Walk Los Angeles, the largest AIDS fundraiser in California.
If you are already walking or are sponsoring someone, good for you! And if you plan to be there on Sunday morning for the opening ceremonies, you will be in for a treat. I go every year and never fail to be moved by the speeches and am pretty much a weepy mess when the walkers are sent off on their journey to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s You’ll Never Walk Alone.
This year, the song will be performed by the incomparable Jenifer Lewis! I am a HUGE fan of this mega-talent who recently appeared on Broadway as Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspray. She has appeared in many films with my favorites being Meet the Browns and Dirty Laundry.
Other confirmed celebrity guests include: Drew Carey (“The Price Is Right”), Conchata Ferrell (“Two and a Half Men”), Barrett Foa (“NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigation Service”), Dot Marie Jones (“Glee”), Carson Kressley (television personality and “Dancing with the Stars” contestant), Academy Award winner Cloris Leachman (“Raising Hope”), Louis Van Amstel (“Dancing with the Stars”) and Pauley Perrette (“NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigation Service”) who I’m pictured with below at the AIDS Walk in 2010.
