Meryl Streep and Katie Couric join together against cancer

Academy Award®-winning actress Meryl Streep encourages people to get screened for colon cancer in new broadcast public service announcements (PSAs) that launch in March, in conjunction with National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
The PSAs, which will premiere today on Katie!, are the latest collaboration between the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (EIF’s NCCRA), co-founded by Katie Couric, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the CDC’s Screen for Life: National Colorectal Cancer Action Campaign. This initiative is a multi-year effort to educate Americans about the importance of regular colorectal cancer screening for men and women aged 50 years and over.
Streep is one of the world’s most renowned actors, having won three Academy Awards as well as multiple Golden Globe, British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and Screen Actors Guild awards, in addition to Primetime Emmys and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute. She is the third Oscar-winning actor to appear in the Screen for Life campaign, along with Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton.
Of cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, taking the lives of more than 50,000 Americans every year. Yet the disease is highly preventable through screening. Screening can detect pre-cancerous growths called polyps that can be removed before they develop into colorectal cancer. Screening can also detect colorectal cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most effective.
Streep explains these benefits of screening in the PSA, titled Control, adding that, “For me, screening was simple and quick. It was no big deal, except for the huge sense of relief you feel afterwards.”
The colorectal cancer death rate has declined steadily for several years. According to the CDC, half of this decrease can be attributed to more people getting screened. Despite that progress, one third of U.S. adults age 50 and over are still not up to date with recommended screening.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends colorectal cancer screening for men and women aged 50–75. (The decision to be screened after age 75 should be made on an individual basis. People older than 75 are advised to ask their doctors if they should be screened.)
The CDC considers Screen for Life one of the most effective campaigns it has undertaken to encourage screening.
Streep said she was motivated to get screened after seeing Katie Couric’s [...]

Sheryl Crow reveals possible cause of brain tumor

HollywoodNews.com: Sheryl Crow recently revealed that she is suffering from a brain tumor, and now she might know the cause of it.
Crow spoke with Katie Couric about how cell phone use may have led to her brain tumor, states TMZ. Although doctors have not confirmed anything, Crow believes she sees a link.
“I do have the theory that it’s possible that it’s related to [cell phone use] … [in the] early early days when I was promoting my first record, I did hours of phoners on the old archaic cell phones,” Crow commented.
Crow has a benign tumor the size of her pinky that is not necessarily serious but does have to be monitored.
Do you think her cell phone is related to the cause?

Andrew Garfield & Worldwide Orphans Foundation Salon Event

HollywoodNews.com: Last night, Andrew Garfield the star of The Amazing Spider-Man was honored as the sports ambassador by Dr. Jane Aronson and the Worldwide Orphans Foundation at the Royalton Hotel in NYC. In attendance was Spider-Man co-star, Emma Stone to show her support.
Andrew had teamed up with WWO after traveling with Dr. Aronson to Haiti and Ethiopia. Garfield saw firsthand, “the injustice of defenseless children losing their birthright.” Dr. Aronson has said that her work with Andrew is “an opportunity to show young people how service can enrich their lives.” Andrew will serve as the WWO Sports Ambassador because he believes that sports strengthen children physically and emotionally, and teach very important life skills.
Andrew Garfield was also photographed wearing the pipe-cleaner blue glasses in recognition of WWO’s Blue Glasses Campaign. WWO’s Founder and CEO Dr. Jane Aronson, wears bright blue glasses to symbolize the optimism and joy she feels for WWO’s work. “In the summer of 2010, Dr. Jane visited WWO’s summer camp in Ethiopia, where children were making art with pipe cleaners. Four-year old Mahlet picked up some blue pipe cleaners and, while studying Dr. Jane carefully, crafted a pair of blue glasses. She tugged on Dr. Jane’s sleeve and pointed to herself saying, “Me, Dr. Jane, me, Dr. Jane.” Soon every child there began crafting their own pipe cleaner glasses. Dr. Jane thought, “If only everyone could see these children as the fabulous, bright, special individuals they are. If only they could see what I see.” And that was how the Blue Glasses campaign got started. WWO believes that the blue glasses symbolize seeing the world through the eyes of an orphan.

New England Patriots Tom Brady Helps To Save The Life Of A Woman Needing A Lifesaving Kidney Transplant

HollywoodNews.com: New England Patriots Tom Brady owes a lot of his success to Tom Martinez, the 68-yearold Quarterback coach from California who had mentored No. 12 since he was a boy. So it was no surprise that the star pupil had been trying to help his teacher, who was in failing health, and needed a kidney transplant by asking people through the Internet to go to MatchingDonors.com to be tested to see if they are a potential compatible kidney donor to Tom Martinez. Within a few weeks, over 600 people came forward on MatchingDonors.com to see if they could be a match for Tom Martinez. Many were tested, and a lifesaving kidney transplant was going to potentially happen in a few weeks, but unexpectedly a few days before he could get his transplant, on his birthday, Tom Martinez died of a massive heart attack.
A potential organ donor- Peter Hughes from Sterling, Massachusetts had come forward from Tom Brady’s request to see if he could save the coach’s life – he was going to be tested for Tom Martinez, but Tom Martinez died too soon. Peter has 14 siblings and he works in the child support department for the government. Even though Peter never considered donating a kidney to anyone before Tom Brady’s plea, he knew though it was his destiny to donate a lifesaving kidney to someone. So after the coach died Peter went back on to MatchingDonors.com and found a woman needing a kidney transplant from Massachusetts who he wanted to get tested for. The woman was originally from war torn Bosnia – and has an incredible story about overcoming many major adversities, Peter got tested and was a match for her and now they are going to have their surgery on May 22, 2012 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Peter said “I would have never thought abou t being an organ donor if it hadn’t been for Tom Brady’s plea for his mentor.”
Ajisa will be receiving her lifesaving transplant only six months after being on MatchingDonors.com versus the 7 to ten years she would have had to wait on the government’s deceased donors list.
Peter put in his MatchingDonors.com profile : I am the youngest of 14 siblings and we were always taught by our parents to help out when we can, especially when it comes to someone’s life.
Ajisa put on her MatchingDonors.com profile: I desperately need [...]

Maroon 5 and Adam Levine to the rescue…

HollywoodNews.com: Maroon 5 and Adam Levine to the rescue…
Adam Levine, lead singer of Maroon 5, and Shire today announced the launch of “The Own It Project.” “The Own It Project” is designed to encourage young adults and adults who are taking responsibility for their Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) – and owning it – to motivate others to do the same by entering their story for a chance to become the next “Own It” spokesperson.
“The Own It Project” is part of an overall initiative called the “Own It” initiative, which was introduced in 2011. This overall initiative aims to motivate those who were diagnosed with ADHD when they were younger – and thought they outgrew it – to get reassessed by their doctor if their symptoms are still affecting them as young adults and adults. The overall initiative and “The Own It Project” are endorsed by the Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA), Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) and made possible by Shire.
“The Own It Project” encourages adults with ADHD to tell us the story of when they realized they needed to own their ADHD. By submitting their story to www.OwnItProject.com, adults enter a national contest for a chance to win a prize package and be the next “Own It” campaign spokesperson.
“‘The Own It Project’ is important because it encourages adults, like me, who are owning their ADHD, to become advocates and tell their story,” said Adam Levine. “I hope that this effort will help people realize the importance of owning their ADHD.”
“The Own It Project” winner can choose between two prize packages, one focused on technology and the other focused on professional appearance. Both prize package options include sessions with an ADHD coach. The winner also will receive an autographed guitar as a personal gift from Adam Levine. In addition, they will get the chance to be the next campaign spokesperson and have their story featured in the national campaign. Submissions will be accepted until June 6, 2012. For official rules, visit www.OwnItProject.com.
The leaders of CHADD and ADDA have released the following joint statement in support of “The Own It Project”: “It’s so important for people with ADHD to hear from their peers and share experiences. ‘The Own It Project’ does just that – and we support the project as one that encourages the ADHD community to support itself.”
“The Own It Project” is for people who are owning their [...]

Miley Cyrus promotes gluten-free diet, gets slammed by health expert

HollywoodNews.com: Miley Cyrus was recently accused of an eating disorder as she apparently looked thinner than usual, but she is now explaining that it’s all due to her gluten-free eating habits.
Cyrus recently took to Twitter to reveal that she suffers a gluten and lactose allergy which has her on a very special diet, states UsMagazine.com. And apparently she thinks everyone should try it with her.
“Everyone should try no gluten for a week! The change in your skin, physical and mental health is amazing. You won’t go back!” Cyrus commented to a fan on Twitter.
However, registered dietitian and food industry consultant Rachel Begun commented that the diet should most likely be for those who have been recommended to go on it.
“People who go gluten-free may gain weight if they rely mostly on highly-processed gluten free foods, many of which tend to be higher in fat, calories and sugar than their gluten-containing counterparts,” Begun commented.
And other experts agree: “There’s absolutely no evidence that a gluten-free diet promotes weight loss,” Karen Ansel, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, commented.
What do you think about Cyrus’ comments?
