This year, the 12th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates at their World Summit will recognize a high-profile personality making an outstanding contribution to international social justice and peace. Sean Penn is that person. Sean is an actor, founder and CEO of J/P Haitian Relief Organization, and will be presented with the 2012 Peace Summit Award during the summit for his work to rebuild and aid the victims of the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, as well as his ongoing advocacy for peace and human rights protection worldwide.
Penn has been active in supporting several political and social causes. On June 10, 2005, Penn made a visit to Iran. Acting as a journalist on an assignment for the San Francisco Chronicle, he attended a Friday prayer at Tehran University.
On January 7, 2006, Penn was a special guest at the Progressive Democrats of America, where he was joined by author and media critic Norman Solomon, Democratic congressional candidate Charles Brown, and activist Cindy Sheehan. The “Out of Iraq Forum”, which took place in Sacramento, California, was organized to promote the anti-war movement calling for an end to the War in Iraq.
In August 2008, Penn made an appearance at one of Ralph Nader’s “Open the Debates” Super Rallies. He protested the political exclusion of Nader and other third parties.
In October 2008, Penn traveled to Cuba, where he met with and interviewed President Raúl Castro.
Criticism of President Bush

On October 18, 2002, Penn placed a US$56,000 advertisement in the Washington Post asking then President George W. Bush to end a cycle of violence. It was written as an open letter and referred to the planned attack on Iraq and the War on Terror. In the letter, Penn also criticized the Bush administration for its “deconstruction of civil liberties” and its “simplistic and inflammatory view of good and evil.” Penn visited Iraq briefly in December 2002.
This advertisement was cited as a primary reason for the development of his relationship with Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez. In one of his televised speeches, Chávez used and read aloud an open letter Penn wrote to Bush. HollywoodNews.com: Cynthia Nixon may be best known for her role as Miranda Hobbs in the Sex and the City TV series and movies, but she also has a long Broadway career that will resume in January when she stars in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit.
The play will begin previews on January 5 at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre and which will officially open on January 26.
The play is about a brilliant and exacting poetry professor undergoing experimental treatment for cancer. A scholar who devoted her life to academia, she must now face the irony and injustice of becoming the subject of research.
Nixon has triumphed in Broadway before winning a Tony Award for her performance in Rabbit Hole. Her other Broadway credits are The Women, Indiscretions, The Heidi Chronicles, Hurlyburly, The Real Thing, and The Philadelphia Story.
An Emmy winner for Sex and the City and Law & Order: SVU, she currently appears on Showtime’s The Big C.

hollywoodnews.com: The Producers Guild of America (PGA), announced today that Sean Penn will be honored with the 2011 Stanley Kramer Award. The award will be presented to Penn at the 22nd Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony on Saturday, January 22nd at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
The Stanley Kramer Award was established in 2002 to honor a motion picture, producer or other individual, whose achievement or contribution illuminates provocative social issues in an accessible and elevating fashion. Kramer, considered within the film industry to have served as ‘Hollywood’s Conscience’ during his career as a film producer and director, created some of the most respected and successful works in the annals of American motion pictures. He was the master behind such classics as ‘The Caine Mutiny,’ ‘High Noon,’ ‘The Defiant Ones,’ and ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.’
Previous recipients of the Kramer award include such films as The Great Debaters, An Inconvenient Truth, Hotel Rwanda, Innocent Voices, In America, Antwone Fisher, and the 2010 winner was PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL ‘PUSH’ BY SAPPHIRE. Sean Penn is the first individual to receive the Guild’s Stanley Kramer Award, and the first recipient of the award in 2002 was the film ‘I AM SAM,’ which Penn starred in.

Two-time Academy Award® winner Sean Penn has become an American film icon in a career spanning nearly three decades. Penn has been nominated five times for the Academy Award® as Best Actor for Dead Man Walking, Sweet and Lowdown, I Am Sam and won his first Oscar® in 2003 for his searing performance in Clint Eastwood’s Mystic River and his second Oscar® as Best Actor in 2009 for Gus Van Sant’s Milk. The performance as gay rights icon Harvey Milk also garnered Penn ‘Best Actor’ awards from The Screen Actors Guild, New York Film Critics Circle and Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
