“Harry Potter” theme park coming to Southern California

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: And this is how the “Harry Potter” legacy will live on: Through theme parks.
Now that The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, Florida has ironed out its kinks (or the most part, from what I’m hearing), plans are being revealed to expand the Potter experience to the West Coast with a second attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Sources tell The Wall Street Journal that the Southern California park will closely resemble the Florida facility, with a replica of Hogwarts Castle, rollercoasters, and themed restaurants that take their cue from J.K. Rowlings’ award-winning novels.
And if the idea takes off, the sky’s the limit, as WSJ report that similar parks could be opened “in such foreign territories as Japan, Singapore and Spain.”

Harry Potter death commemoration sweeps the Internet

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: This is awesome. Dedicated fans of Harry Potter and J.K. Rowling’s legendary character are planning a moment of silence at 3 p.m.today to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Harry’s parents, Lily and James, who died on this day defending their infant son from Lord Voldemort.
That’s why “RIP Lily and James Potter” became a trending topic early this morning on Twitter as Potter fans rallied in support of the deceased literary characters.
“One hour Twitter silence in honour of James & Lily Potter begins now. RIP James and Lily Potter,” types @JoRowlingNet.
THR has a solid recap as to why several “Potter” fans are planning an hour of Twitter silence in honor or their beloved characters. Maybe they’ll just be trick-or-treating at that time?
How will you commemorate the anniversary? My suggestion: Watch one of the “Potter” films. It’s far more productive, and entertaining, than moments of virtual silence.

‘Jersey Shore’s’ Snooki not clued in to other writers

HollywoodNews.com: ‘Jersey Shore’ star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi may have released her second book and be working on a third, but that doesn’t mean she knows anything about other writers.
Snooki spoke to Jimmy Kimmel about ‘Confessions of a Guidette’ when he asked about some other writers who haven’t been able to get books out as quickly as she does, states UsMagazine.com. “This is all in the span of one year, which is incredible to me because it takes J.K. Rowling three years to write one book,” Kimmel said, comparing Snooki’s two-book release to ‘Harry Potter.’
“I don’t know who that is, but I’m here,” Snooki responded.
Kimmel then joked around and compared her language use in the book to that of Dr. Maya Angelou. “I don’t know who that is,” Snooki said once again.
What do you think about Snooki and her fame?

Release of Harry Potter e-books delayed until 2012

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Despite earlier announcements that electronic versions of the seven “Harry Potter” books would go on sale in October exclusively via the online portal, “Pottermore,” creators of the portal announced today that the e-book release will be pushed back to 2012.
Pottermore is currently available to only one million registered users, who were permitted to join as part of the July launch after being chosen through an online competition. The creators of the portal attributed the e-book delay to serving a greater purpose: “opening Pottermore to as many people as possible and making the experience as good as it can be.”
Consequently, the focus of Pottermore for the remainder of 2011 will be to enlist as many new users as possible. The site has been described as “combination of virtual encyclopedia, role-playing game and online community for fans of author J.K. Rowling’s boy wizard.”

Daniel Radcliffe in first “Woman In Black” trailer

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Daniel Radcliffe prepares to put his Harry Potter character in the past. The young actor, who has been associated with the boy wizard for a decade, is ready to move on to different roles. Up first is a ghostly adaptation of Susan Hill’s period novel, and we have the first look at a trailer.
In the film, Radcliffe plays Arthur Kipps, an attorney sent to the countryside to organize the papers of a recently deceased woman. What he finds, though, is the vengeful spirit of an angry woman who feels like she has been scorned.
Here’s the trailer, which was posted on Yahoo Movies:

It’s an effective teaser, using a nursery rhyme and traditional haunted house imagery to prepare audiences for the frights that are in store. Naturally, we’re curious to see what Radcliffe can do outside of J.K. Rowling’s realm. But if any young actor has the potential to break free from the “Harry Potter” legacy and establish a lengthy career on their own, it’s Radcliffe.

Harry Potter now the “biggest grossing” series in history

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Seven is a lucky number for the Harry Potter franchise.
There were seven books in J.K. Rowling’s literary series. Harry, himself, was the seventh horcrux … which ended up destroying Voldemort’s soul. The last film, “The Deathly Hallows,” should have been the seventh film, but Warner broke it up into parts 7 and 8 (though it will always be one long Part 7 in our minds).
And now the cinematic franchise has crossed the $7 billion mark as a collective series, “cementing their place as the biggest grossing series ever,” Reuters reports.
Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution, called the sum achieved by the Potter films a “stunning achievement.”
He couldn’t be more right. This series, with the same actors under the direction of four different helmers, ended up being unlike anything we’ve seen or will see again. The money earned is well-deserved. Congrats, Warner Bros., and thank you Harry, for everything.

This Week In Movies by Pete Hammond: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II

HollywoodNews.com: What else is there to talk about this week in movies? It’s all about a beloved literary character from books read by kids the world over and now brought to life in countless films, the latest opening this past Friday.
And if you think I’m talking about Winnie The Pooh you’re living in a cave.
Despite Disney’s pooh-pooh opening for the week’s only other wide release ,Winnie The Pooh, this week is all about the final, FINAL chapter of Warner Bros. gigantic film franchise , Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II. Now I wasn’t a huge fan of last November’s Part I, a very dark and somewhat convoluted affair that just seemed to drag out the Potter tale rather than expand it , but this finale is something else . a perfectly pitched emotionally satisfying way for the most successful franchise in motion picture history to go out. Audiences seemed to agree giving this one a solid ‘A’ Cinemascore rating and a record-breaking domestic weekend sendoff of an estimated $168 million, $10 million more than The Dark Knight scored three years ago. Worldwide the total now stands at nearly half a billion ($475 million) for the opening weekend, simply astounding. That beats Potter’s own previous best, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince by over $70 million. Of course this is the first Potter film to succumb to the 3D disease that has swept the industry so those higher prices factored into the much bigger haul this time but actually with Potter fever running at an all time high and interest so intense in the final film it is clear records would be shattered even if it had only been released on 16MM prints.
When I talked to director David Yates on Thursday , the eve of the Potter phenomenon, he expressed his own basic dislike of the 3D process but said he did everything he could to make this 3D conversion the best possible, at least from a technical standpoint. Yates has directed the last four (out of eight) editions of the Harry Potter franchise spending six years solid going from one to another. He only finished this one just three weeks before opening and is now looking for a long vacation. The director had never dabbled in films of this scale before taking on his first one, [...]

Harry Potter stirs up interest for themed fancy-dress costumes

HollywoodNews.com: The media circus surrounding the release of the final Harry Potter film has sparked a huge interest in people wanting to look like J.K. Rowling’s characters, according to a leading online fancy dress company.
Daniel Radcliffe returns to play the lead role of the bespectacled wizard for the eagerly-anticipated eighth and final instalment when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 hits UK cinemas from July 15. With Potter fever sweeping the nation once more, costume company Fancy Dress Ball is being inundated with orders for costumes and accessories associated with the highest-grossing film series of all time.
“It has been a magical last few weeks,” said Fancy Dress Ball’s Paul Howcroft, who also revealed that sales of 70s fancy dress and 80s fancy dress items are rivalling the amount of Potter paraphernalia flying off the shelves at present.
“The Harry Potter films appeal to a wide variety of people of all ages and it’s no surprise really that so many people are choosing to get dressed up like somebody straight out of Hogwarts.
“We expect sales to increase further over the coming month or so as the new film hits the big screen and, given the success of the franchise already, I think I can confidently predict that becoming ‘Harry Potter’ for a few hours at least will be a timeless classic on the fancy dress circuit for years to come.”

Harry Potter cast is our “Hollywood Movie Star of the Week”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: The end is near. For some, it already has begun.
Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and the stars of the “Harry Potter” series started saying goodbye to the massive franchise with a world premiere for the film in London on Thursday. The farewell tour extends into next week, with premieres in New York ahead of the film’s July 15 opening.
And then, “Harry Potter” will be gone.

Not forever, of course. The Boy Who Lived will live on in our memories. He’ll return every time we crack open J.K. Rowlings’ books or pop in one of the eight fantastic film on Blu-ray and DVD. Gone, maybe, but never forgotten.
We do know, however, that we’ll never see a franchise like this on screen again. Eight amazing films from four different filmmakers that never dropped in quality and went on to earn (so far) more than $2 billion at the domestic box office and far more worldwide. Staggering.
We hate to see you go, Harry. But before we let you leave, we wanted to name the cast of the “Harry Potter” series our “Hollywood Movie Star of the Week.” Thanks for the magic.

Emma Watson Tears Up at Harry Potter Premiere

HollywoodNews.com: At the London premiere of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II’, Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint thanked fans and said their goodbyes. After 10 years, the group got a little emotional, especially 21-year-old Emma.
According to Hollyscoop.com, the actress got teary-eyed at one point. Emma said, “I will really miss Rupert [Grint] and Dan [Radcliffe]. I’ll just miss being Hermione. I just love being in her world. How can you top this?”
Emma also told the fans, “It’s overwhelming to try to find the words to say what I want to say, but I have been so privileged to play this role and be a part of these films…Thank you so much.” Afterwards, she was reportedly consoled by one of the producers and J.K. Rowling, herself. The proud, yet humble cast reminisced together and had some laughs.
What do you think Emma plans to do next?
