“Horrible Bosses” box numbers trigger sequel talk

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Audiences turned out this weekend to support the star-studded comedic ensemble “Horrible Bosses,” which finds Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis and Charlie Day plotting to kill Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell. The comedy nabbed an estimated $28 million in its opening weekend, giving it the No. 2 slot in the box office Top 10.
But would more people have turned out if the comedy starred Ashton Kutcher, Ryan Reynolds, Philip Seymour Hoffman or Johnny Knoxville, as originally planned?
In an interview with “Bosses” producer Brett Ratner, he revealed that the above actors all, at some point, were attached to the comedic premise. Casting options come and go in Hollywood, so it’s no surprise that these names were floated (and eventually flopped).
But in the piece (which you can read HERE), Ratner also admits that sequel talk has begun, and the franchise could go in wildly different directions. Ratner, perhaps jokingly, said that while no plans for a follow up are in development at this time, titles like “Horrible Wives” and “Horrible Children” appeal to him.
What do you think? Is this a concept you want to see expanded? Or was “Bosses” a one-and-done hit? Let us know.

“Horrible Bosses” has excellent Friday but “Transformers” still leads

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Audiences continue to support R-rated comedies at the summer box office. Following the booming success of “Bridesmaids” and “The Hangover Part II,” Seth Gordon’s “Horrible Bosses” opened to a solid Friday number, posting an estimated $10 million for the day for a potential $27 million weekend, THR reports.
The film, which received largely positive reviews, boasts an all-star cast that includes Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis as three schulbs who are plotting to kill their bosses, played by Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell. Jamie Foxx so-stars.
Despite the strong number, “Bosses” couldn’t top “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” which led Friday with roughly $15M.
The weekend’s other new release, Kevin James’ “Zookeeper,” grabbed nearly $8M on Friday for a third-place finish.

“Horrible Bosses” In Theaters Friday, July 8

HollywoodNews.com: Management candidate Nick (Jason Bateman) has been logging 12-hour days and eating everything his twisted supervisor Harken (Kevin Spacey) dishes out, toward the promise of a well-earned promotion.
But now he knows that’s never going to happen. Meanwhile, dental assistant Dale (Charlie Day) has been struggling to maintain his self-respect against the relentless X-rated advances of Dr. Julia Harris (Jennifer Aniston), when she suddenly turns up the heat. And accountant Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) has just learned that his company’s corrupt new owner, Pellit (Colin Farrell), is not only bent on ruining his career but plans to funnel toxic waste into an unsuspecting population.
What can you do when your boss is a psycho, a man-eater or a total tool?
Quitting is not an option. These monsters must be stopped. So, on the strength of a few-too-many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con whose street cred is priced on a sliding scale (Jamie Foxx), the guys devise a convoluted but foolproof plan to rid the world of their respective employers… permanently.
But even the best-laid plans are only as good as the brains behind them.
The comedy “Horrible Bosses” stars Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Justin Sudeikis, with Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Kevin Spacey, Donald Sutherland, Julie Bowen and Jamie Foxx.
“Horrible Bosses” is directed by Seth Gordon and produced by Brett Ratner and Jay Stern, from a screenplay by Michael Markowitz and John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein, story by Markowitz. Toby Emmerich, Richard Brener, Michael Disco, Samuel J. Brown and Diana Pokorny serve as executive producers, with John Rickard and John Cheng as co-producers.
The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography David Hennings; production designer Shepherd Frankel; editor Peter Teschner; costume designer Carol Ramsey; composer Christopher Lennertz; and music supervisor Dana Sano.
A New Line Cinema presentation of a Rat Entertainment Production, “Horrible Bosses” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Jason Sudeikis MTV monologue attacks Schwarzenegger, Bieber

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Arnold Schwarzenegger was the butt of several jokes as “Saturday Night Live” star Jason Sudeikis took the stage to host the 2011 MTV Movie Awards.
Right off the bat, Sudeikis gave a shout out to the fans in the balcony of the theater before commenting that, for the first time in MTV history, everyone up there was fathered by the former California governor.
Later in his monologue, Sudeikis addressed the crowd and said, “I was surprised to find so many kids this year – not as surprised as Maria Shriver though.”
Before he let Schwarzenegger off the hoof, the host joked, “You should check out [Arnold’s] next movie – Pumping the Ironer.”
But it wasn’t all Schwarzenegger jokes. Sudeikis also thoroughly embarrassed Selena Gomez by joking about her relationship with Justin Bieber, telling everyone they have been sucking so much face, she’s already swallowed three of Bieber’s baby teeth.
In all, it was a pretty good monologue, and probably the highlight of the evening.

Jason Sudeikis wants Robert Pattinson to host SNL; but Pattinson doesn’t think he’s funny

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: “We got you, buddy. You’ll be fine. Hold on to me tightly. We’ll take you through the forest of SNL,” said 2011 MTV Movie Awards host Jason Sudeikis to MTV News. His words of encouragement were directed toward Robert Pattinson, one of the most sought-after no-go hosts of Sudeikis’ regular gig, Saturday Night Live.
“I think anybody should host ['SNL'] if it’s something they want to do. Just give it a shot!” Sudeikis told MTV News. “We’re certainly a safe place, a safe haven.”
But Pattinson isn’t convinced he’s funny, as he revealed to a different SNL alum, Jimmy Fallon on the well-loved March 2010 episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. After making a cameo on Fallon’s popular “Robert is Bothered” sketch in which the comedian plays a rather “Cullenized” version of the Brit, Pattinson commented, “Seeing that made me realize why I’m not a comedian.”

2011 MTV Movie Awards promos: not cutting the mustard

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman was a hard act to follow, and so far the 2011 MTV Movie Awards promos aren’t quite living up to last year’s standards. It’s not 2011 host Jason Sudeikis‘ fault—Tom Cruise’s reprisal of his Golden Globe nominated role as outlandish Hollywood über-agent Les Grossman was a known win dating back to the debut of the character in the 2008 hit “Tropic Thunder”.
So, what do the 2011 promos show? An exaggeratedly zany Jason Sudeikis paying unbidden visits to nominess prior to the show. Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner of The Twilight Saga films feature in the most popular spots (though the humor used is both more predictable and less aggressive than what was seen in 2010).
A key difference between the promo strategies: whereas Les Grossman featured prominently in the 2010 lead-up, 2010 host Aziz Anzari built up little personal hype prior to the show. In 2011, Sudeikis, as the host, is taking a more prominent role from the beginning, endearing himself to the audience and becoming poised to fully carry the show.

‘SNL’s’ Jason Sudeikis on Jon Hamm’s kissing skills and more

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: Brandon Voss has done another terrific interview for ‘The Advocate.’
This time his subject is ‘Saturday Night Live’ funnyman Jason Sudeikis who has the feature films ‘Hall Pass’ and ‘Horrible Bosses’ coming out soon. Will he join the ranks of such ‘SNL’ alums as Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, John Belushi and Chevy Chase by becoming a big movie star?
Time will tell.
Here are some excerpts from his chat with Brandon:
Have guys ever hit on him?
I think so. No guy’s offered to whisk me away on a boat to some amazing island, unfortunately, but I have been high-fived a few times with a thoughtful, lingering glance.
On kissing Jon Hamm on the hog:
Well, technically I kissed him on the mouth, but — oh, you mean the motorcycle. ‘SNL’ already has those “Kissing Family” sketches, where the joke is that the family is way too into each other, so Jon and I agreed in rehearsal, “Let’s not play this for laughs with slapping tongues. Let’s kiss for real. We’ll bump mustaches and kiss like we mean it.”… The sketch was written by James Anderson, one of our gay writers, and Michael O’Brien, one of our straight writers, and they delighted in the details of the scene beyond just building to a kiss between two of Liz Lemon’s ex-boyfriends.
On sucking Zac Efron’s foot:
There was so much good energy by the time we did it for the show, I thought, I’m just going to try it and make him fight me, but I was able to overpower him and stick half his foot in my mouth. I figured if anyone in the world has a clean foot, it’s got to be Zac Efron…That’s one of the nice things about life: It doesn’t matter how good-looking you are or how well your career’s going, all our feet taste the same.
Is Jon Hamm a good kisser?
As far as I can tell. I’ve kissed a handful of fellas in various improv shows and stuff, but I’d never done it with a mustache or kissed someone else with a mustache, so that was interesting. It’s off the bucket list!

Trailer Park: Adam Sandler, Owen Wilson and Kevin James in new comedies

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: So many new trailers hit the Web yesterday and today, we figured it would be a good idea to round them up in one post.
First up, married men Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis receive a “Hall Pass” from their wives (Christina Applegate and Jenna Fischer) to do what they want, when they want it for one week in the latest comedy from the Farrelly brothers.
Then there’s a screaming Kevin James, who moves from mall cop to “The Zoo Keeper” for Sony. This one will be in theaters next summer.
Sticking with comedians, Adam Sandler follows up “Grown Ups” with “Just Go With It,” a comedy that has him pretending to be married to Jennifer Aniston so he can continue to date supermodel Brooklyn Decker. Sandler has all of the luck.
But it’s not all fun and games in the Trailer Park this morning. We’ve also got the official trailer for Peter Berg’s “The Way Back,” which turned heads in Telluride and will get an Oscar-consideration run in select cities at the end of December. It stars Ed Harris and Colin Farrell as prisoners of war who must march across vicious terrains in order to get home.
And Natalie Portman looks to be following up “Black Swan” with an Ashton Kutcher rom-com titled “No Strings Attached.” I wonder why?
