Star Wars Blu-ray early access App now available

By G. Clay Whittaker
Hollywoodnews.com: “Star Wars: The Complete Saga” will be available on Blu-ray in stores Sept. 16, right in time for some back-to-school marathons and end-of-summer drinking games. But if you can’t even wait that long, this treat for iDevice owners will make for hours of entertainment.
As part of the massive rollout for the “Star Wars” Blu-ray release, fans with iPhones and iPads can download a free app filled with tons of content to whet their appetites.
It’s great stuff for fans that want to go behind the scenes. Blu-ray isn’t really about the films; the die-hard fans are still wearing out that old VHS, and if they’ve upgraded to DVD they treat the disc with an archivists care. Blu-ray is about delivery potential for everything that makes for a richer experience: artwork, prop and costume scans, interviews and a lot of other gems worth investigating.
And the App is an accessible, touch-screen preview of all of that new material. Early screenshots look stellar, and the App is already available for iPad users (sorry iPhone, you have to wait until August 2). It’s a wonderful product for old fans and young ones alike, because a lot of this stuff just isn’t available anywhere.
Download on the iPad today, the iPhone in just a couple of weeks, and if you happen to be going to Comic-Con, they’ll have a display up at booth #3528 with iPads and the Blu-rays for a sample of what’s to come in September.

“X-Men: First Class” Blu-ray date and details

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: In a summer movie season chocked full of superhero efforts – from “Green Lantern” to “Thor” – it’s Matthew Vaughn’s “X-Men: First Class” that I’m most looking forward to seeing on Blu-ray.
Sounds like Sept. 9 will be my lucky day.
CraveOnline is reporting that 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment plans to release a Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy package of the X-Men prequel, which stars James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as Charles Xavier and Magneto, respectively, during their difficult formative years.
The studio also is drumming up support with a humorous, “Twilight”-inspired Team Erik and Team Charles contest. Free t-shirts are involved (and who doesn’t like that?)
Here is a look at alternate box-cover art. Be sure to click the link above to find out how to score some choice “First Class” t-shirts by ordering the Blu-ray during San Diego’s Comic-Con.

Lisa Cholodenko talks “Kids,” Blu-ray technology, and the Oscar race

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Lisa Cholodenko’s “The Kids Are All Right” continues to make waves in the Oscar race, drumming up support in multiple categories as we truck along towards nominations time. While several studios have had to make concessions to get screener copies of their films in voters’ hands, Focus Features wisely released Cholodenko’s hit dra-medy on DVD and Blu-ray in time for the holidays so audiences, critics and key guild members could be reminded of its merits as they filled out crucial ballots.
As the DVD hit streets, Cholodenko called HollywoodNews.com to talk about emotional scenes, Blu-ray technology, recording commentary tracks, and the headlines generated by the Julianne Moore vs. Annette Bening discussion.
HollywoodNews.com: You went through a similar process as your characters, having a child from an anonymous sperm donation. Were you projecting a bit into your own child’s future when you started writing the dialogue for Joni and Laser?
Lisa Cholodenko: You know, if I was having any fantasia about that, it didn’t really go very far. I think once I started writing this script and inventing these characters, I kind of cut out of my own imagining of what my kid would be going through and just jumped into this family’s situation.
HN: You and Stuart [Blumberg] wrote a scene that, to me, remains one of the most moving and beautiful things I’ve seen on screen this year, and it’s the family embrace outside of Joni’s dorm room. Could you talk about constructing that scene?
LC: Well, I have to give Stuart credit for really getting into the viscera of that scene. I love that scene, and I really felt it. It felt like a great way to bring closure to the film. But I think that he had a sense-memory of his experience going to college and saying goodbye to his parents.
HN: Neither of you have college-aged kids?
LC: No, but I think he was able to conjure that experience of his own as the kid going off to college, and then bringing Julianne [Moore] and Annette [Bening] into it, they certainly supplied their own feeling about it. Annette had just sent her first-born off to college, so she certainly knows what those feelings are.

HN: Your film’s now available on Blu-ray. Are you converting your own personal film library over to Blu-ray films?
LC: Well, we have a few Blu-rays, yeah! I don’t know where technology is heading, though, […]

“Kids Are All Right,” with Bening and Moore, announces DVD date

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: A debate has been brewing in Oscar prognosticator circles recently regarding the chances of both Julianne Moore and Annette Bening claiming Best Actress nominations for their work in Lisa Cholodenko’s “The Kids Are All Right.”
In a few weeks, we’re going to be able to revisit the character-driven relationship comedy and judge for ourselves which actress deserves a shot at the Academy Award.
That’s because Universal Studios Home Entertainment plans to release kids on Blu-ray and DVD on Nov. 16, just in time for your own dysfunctional family to pop in “Kids” after Thanksgiving dinner and spend a little time with Moore and Bening’s dysfunctional family. Cholodenko’s film follows the teenage children of a lesbian couple who stir the pot when they seek out their birth father (Mark Ruffalo).

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: By most standards, Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” underperformed.
Buoyed by a boatload of pre-release publicity – including a major push at San Diego’s ComiCon – the graphic novel adaptation only earned $31M this summer. The common belief was that “Scott Pilgrim” had a niche audience, and they turned out. But that was all.
