Veronica Mars Film Coming Next Summer

30,000 people donated an average of $64 during a several hour period yesterday, and thus we will be getting a Veronica Mars movie sometime next summer.
Creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell used Kickstarter to basically prove to Warner Bros. that there is indeed an interest in a continuation of the cult detective drama that ran for three low-rated seasons on the CW back in 2004-2007.
The deal was basically to raise $2 million in a month and Warner Bros. would agree to distribute and market the film, giving it a limited theatrical release and the various home-viewing options. They hit their target at 5:55 pm this evening. I made a bitchy joke earlier in the day about raising money to find domestic ‘food insecurity’ among American children by calling such an initiative ‘Save Firefly!’ or something to that effect. My first instincts were ones of priorities and what this said about our ‘entitlement culture’. Upon reflection (I purposely didn’t write anything immediately), I’m still not sure how I feel about this. This is indeed very interesting, it may even be *news*. But is it good news overall.

Melissa McCarthy is officially a comedy mega-star

‘Identity Thief’ cements Melissa McCarthy’s stardom while Side Effects clarifies Channing Tatum’s box office drawing power.
Melissa McCarthy is officially a comedy mega-star. There can be little dispute of that after this weekend. Identity Thief topped the box office this weekend with an astonishing $36.5 million and I’m at a loss to think of any reasons it would do so well aside from Ms. McCarthy.
Jason Bateman is a terrific actor and a fine foil, but he’s box office poison as a lead (The Switch opened with $8.4 million, Extract opened to $4.3 million, and The Change-Up debuted with $13 million). The film’s simple and self-explanatory title, along with the clever expository tagline (“She’s having the time of his life.”) surely helped, as did the lack of any big comedies in the current marketplace. Parental Guidance and This Is Forty are both doing stealthy strong business, with $74 million and $67 million thus far respectively, but this is the first big star comic vehicle in awhile and it delivered in spades.
This was McCarthy’s first big test of her alleged stardom. Identity Thief was completely sold on McCarthy’s new-found stardom. The core imagery was basically her face on the poster, slipping a Slurpee next to a befuddled Jason Bateman. This is a much larger debut than Bridesmaids, the film which catapulted her to fame and proverbial glory back in May, 2011. This is among the ten-best R-rated comedy debuts ever and the fifth-best for a non-sequel. Heck, it opened bigger than the PG-13 Couples Retreat, which had a proverbial whos-who of comedy players (Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman, Kristin Davis, and Kristen Bell) and managed a $34 million debut back in October 2009.
Fox has to be thrilled at the moment, knowing that they have a plausible gold-mine in the Melissa McCarthy/Sandra Bullock action-comedy The Heat waiting in the wings for June of this summer.

Kristen Bell reportedly expecting first child

HollywoodNews.com: It looks like there is going to be a new mom in Hollywood as it is being reported that Kristen Bell is pregnant.
Bell is allegedly expecting her first child with fiance Dax Shepard after being together since 2007, states RadarOnline. However, while they are reportedly expecting, that doesn’t mean they will be walking down the aisle anytime soon.
The two have been very outspoken about not marrying until same-sex marriage was also legal. “[We] consider ourselves already married…we already wear the rings. I don’t want a wedding. It’s too much stress,” Bell has commented in the past.
Bell and Shepard got engaged in 2009.

Kristen Bell, Dax Shepard talk marriage and children

HollywoodNews.com: Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are happily engaged, but they are standing strong on not marrying until it is legal for everyone.
Bell and Shepard recently told Larry King that they will be holding off on marriage until the moment is right, states UsMagazine.com. “I’ll feel more comfortable having a party — or whatever we have, if anything — if half of our friends who are homosexuals [can celebrate]. It’s just kind of rude to invite everyone to a party for a rite not everyone can hold,” Bell explained.
However, that doesn’t mean they will be holding off on having children as Shepard commented, “We’ll have them out of wedlock. We’re not worried about that.”

Walt Disney Studios Unveils Epic Adventure “Frozen”

HollywoodNews.com: Walt Disney Animation Studios presents an epic tale of adventure and comedy in “Frozen,” a computer-animated feature film slated for the big screen in November 2013. Directed by Chris Buck (“Tarzan,” “Surf’s Up”) and produced by Peter Del Vecho (“Winnie the Pooh,” “The Princess and the Frog”), “Frozen” features the vocal talents of film/TV/stage star Kristen Bell as Anna, a young dreamer about to take the adventure of a lifetime, and Tony Award ®-winning actress Idina Menzel as Elsa the Snow Queen. The movie will feature original songs by Broadway greats Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
In “Frozen,” a prophecy traps a kingdom in eternal winter, so Anna (voice of Bell) must team up with Kristoff, a daring mountain man, on the grandest of journeys to find the Snow Queen (voice of Menzel) and put an end to the icy spell. Encountering Everest-like extremes, mystical creatures and magic at every turn, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom from destruction.
Bell has starred in a variety of films, including the comedies “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Couples Retreat,” and the upcoming films “Hit & Run,” “Some Girls” and the Farrelly Brothers’ “Movie 43.” On the small screen, Bell is currently starring in the Showtime series “House of Lies” alongside Don Cheadle; she has also starred in “Heroes” and “Veronica Mars.” Broadway credits include “The Crucible” and “Tom Sawyer.”
Menzel, who won a Tony Award® as Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Elphaba in Broadway’s “Wicked” (2004), landed her first role on Broadway in 1995 in the Tony Award-winning musical “Rent.” Film credits include “Enchanted” and the feature film “Rent.” She has appeared in a recurring role on TV’s “Glee” and recently released “Idina Menzel Live: Barefoot at the Symphony,” a live concert with an orchestra led by composer/conductor Marvin Hamlisch. Menzel is currently on a North American concert tour.
Robert Lopez is a three-time Tony Award®-winning writer of the Tony and Grammy® Award-winning musical “The Book of Mormon,” which was co-written with Trey Parker and Matt Stone (“South Park”), and the musical “Avenue Q,” which ran for six years on Broadway and four years in London’s West End. Lopez teamed with wife Anderson-Lopez, whose Drama Desk-winning show “In Transit” is Broadway-bound, to write original songs for 2011’s “Winnie the Pooh,” a stage version of “Finding Nemo” and a new musical called “Up Here.”

Kristen Bell reveals marriage plans

HollywoodNews.com: Kristen Bell has been engaged to Dax Shepard for some time now, but the two will not be getting married just yet.
Bell recently revealed that they will not be headed to the altar until gay marriage is legal because they don’t find it fair for them to do so at this time, states RadarOnline.com. “The reason we’re not rushing to get married is because I don’t feel appropriate taking advantage of a right that’s denied to my best friends. That’s why we’ve been so hesitant,” Bell revealed.
And it sounds like the two will be sticking to this plan: “Dax and I have talked about it a lot, and this issue is very important to both of us. We’re just standing up for what we believe in. Period.”

Kristen Bell explains why she just isn’t getting married

HollywoodNews.com: Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have been engaged for some time now, but that doesn’t mean they will be getting married anytime soon.
Bell recently revealed to ‘Vegas Magazine’ that a wedding and marriage aren’t necessarily going to be in her future, states RadarOnline.com. “We consider ourselves already married. We already wear the rings. I don’t want a wedding. It’s too much stress,” Bell commented about their situation.
And it seems they don’t need marriage to make their relationship any stronger as they recently co-produced and co-starred in a new film, ‘Outrun’: “We spent every waking moment together for eight weeks and did not get sick of each other. We are the couple that can do that.”
