The 82nd Academy Awards: If I had been a voter

As I mentioned last time out, this series has officially returned. Yes, once again I’m going to be taking a look back at a recent (or now recent-ish) Oscar lineup and explaining what my vote would have been in each of the big eight categories we all follow so intently each season. I previously mentioned that potentially I could do this once a week with previous Academy Award ceremonies, and while I’m going to be attempting to do just that, time will still tell if it’s something that gets stuck with or not. Again, if nothing else, this continues to give you an interesting look into my cinematic tastes. Over the course of the year you can sort of get a feel for what my current favorites are, but now we can look to the past a bit more.
Alright then, here goes nothing folks…behold my picks for this particular ceremony:
Best Picture – Up in the Air
The nominees here were A Serious Man, An Education, Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, The Hurt Locker, Inglourious Basterds, Precious, and Up. The main snub here, in my book at least, was (500) Days of Summer, and I nearly went with the actual winner in The Hurt Locker, but Up in the Air was my #1 film of this year, so that made it pretty academic in the end.
Best Director – Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker
A history making and diverse category this time out, the field consisted of Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker, James Cameron for Avatar, Lee Daniels for Precious, Jason Reitman for Up in the Air, and Quentin Tarantino for Inglourious Basterds. I believe Marc Webb was snubbed for (500) Days of Summer and really wish that Reitman had come closer to winning, but when you come right down to it, I can’t argue with Bigelow. The first woman to ever win Best Director gets my vote here as well.
Best Actor – George Clooney for Up in the Air
Here the nominees were Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, George Clooney for Up in the Air, Colin Firth for A Single Man, Morgan Freeman for Invictus, and Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker. The Academy missed the boat on nominating Sam Rockwell for Moon, but aside from him, I’d have to go for Clooney.
Best Actress – Carey Mulligan for An Education
The big snub to me here was Zooey Deschanel for (500) Days […]

Tom Cruise’s “One Shot” could film in Pittsburgh after “Dark Knight”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Since when did Pittsburgh become Hollywood of the Midwest?
Set reports from Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” currently filming in Steel City, hit the web on a daily basis. Viola Davis (“The Help,” “Doubt”) and Maggie Gyllenhaal recently wrapped filming of the educational drama “Steel Town” on Pittsburgh’s streets. And now Tom Cruise might bring his next big-budget production to Pennsylvania.
The Post-Gazette says producers of “One Shot,” an adaptation of the 2005 Lee Child thriller that would cast Cruise as ex-military investigator Jack Reacher, “appear poised to shoot the action thriller in Pittsburgh this fall, after ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ packs up its capes, cowls and cat-suits and moves to its next location.”
“The novel largely is set in the state of Indiana in a small, quiet city … with a river. It’s unknown if Pittsburgh would cheat for some other place or play itself,” the article notes.
Paramount plans to open “One Shot” in theaters in 2013. Cruise, meanwhile, will appear in the studio’s “Mission: Impossible” sequel, directed by Brad Bird, out later this year.

Maggie Gyllenhaal hears the “Voices From the Stone”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Maggie Gyllenhaal doesn’t work as frequently as her brother, Jake, but when she chooses a project – be it an indie like “Sherrybaby” or a blockbuster like “The Dark Knight” – it usually has meaning.
So we’re immediately paying close attention to “Voice From the Stone,” a supernatural thriller directed by Eric Howell that has lured the leading lady, according to Variety.
As the trade puts it, Gyllenhaal would play a nurse “drawn to the aid of a young boy who is haunted by malevolent forces within the walls of an old house in the Italian countryside.”
Sounds reminiscent of “The Orphanage,” which was brilliant. Dean Zanuck and Stefano Gallini are on the hook to produce “Voices,” which is based on the Italian novel “Le Voce Della Pietra” by Silvio Raffo.

‘Batman 3′ casting begins for lead femme

HollywoodNews.com: And in more “Batman 3″ news: Christopher Nolan is apparently meeting with lead actresses.
The question remains: For which role? Rumor is that it’s for Catwoman, a role made famous by Michelle Pfeiffer in 1992’s “Batman Returns.”
“Some of the beauties coming in to chat with Christopher would suggest that,” a source reveals.
The casting call sheet per Moviehole reads that Nolan “is looking for actresses in their late 20s and early 30s to take on the main female role in the superhero sequel.”
To date the main female character in Nolan’s “Batman” series has been Bruce Wayne’s g.f. Rachel Dawes, played respectively by Katie Holmes and Maggie Gyllenhaal in “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal looks for laughs in ‘vibrator comedy’

HollywoodNews.com: Maggie Gyllenhaal is working overtime.
Soon after it was announced that she was starring with her main man Peter Sarsgaard in a bluegrass Bill Monroe feature, she’s also linked to a period romantic comedy “Hysteria.”
Variety is calling the film a “vibrator comedy.”
Hugh Dancy stars as the doctor and love interest of Gyllenhaal. Dancy’s character apparently works for her father who is being played by Jonathan Pryce. The film is expected to go before the cameras in October.
Speaking to ScreenCrave, Gyllenhaal exclaims, “I play a firecracker whose father is a doctor who is in the business of curing hysterical women. He cures them basically by getting them off and that actually happened. I end up having a sort of unexpected love affair with this guy who works for him, and who by mistake invents the vibrator.”
Gyllenhaal can be seen on the big screen this weekend in the U.K. kiddie sequel “Nanny McPhee Returns.”
“Nanny McPhee 2” has made $62.6 million at the foreign box office already with close to 40% of its ticket sales coming from its country of origin, the U.K.

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard to duet in bluegrass film

HollywoodNews.com: The life of bluegrass music pioneer, Bill Monroe, will be brought to the big screen in a feature starring real life couple Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard.
Sarsgaard is set to portray Monroe while Gyllenhaal will easily play the musician’s lover Bessie Lee Mauldin.
Digital Spy overheard Gyllenhaal saying “Bill Monroe, who invented Blue Grass music, had a kind of Sid and Nancy-style affair with this woman Bessie Lee Mauldin throughout his life.
“T-Bone Burnett’s going to do the music and Callie Khouri, who wrote ‘Thelma & Louise,’ wrote the script so we’re going to do that together.”
Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard married in May 2009.
The Monroe biopic would mark the second time that the twosome have worked together onscreen. Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard starred alongside each other in the 2005 Sundance Film Festival entry “The Dying Gaul.” They will be appearing on stage soon in the Gotham’s Classic Stage company production of “Three Sisters” in 2011.
Gyllenhaal received a best supporting actress Oscar nominee last year for her turn in another country-themed picture “Crazy Heart.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal finds fulfillment in making “sacrifices” for husband

HollywoodNews.com: Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal has revealed that she finds “so much pleasure” in making sacrifices for her husband.
The ‘Donnie Darko’ star, 32, is married to actor Peter Sarsgaard, 39, and the pair have a three-year-old daughter, Ramona, together.
In an interview with Good Housekeeping magazine, Gyllenhaal admitted that she has a “classical” outlook on her marriage with Sarsgaard.
And she credits her Nanny McPhee co-star Emma Thompson with giving her the idea. Gyllenhaal told the magazine: “Emma, you kind of gave me the idea that a part of my life, a part of my mind, has to be devoted to my husband. My mother’s generation has been bucking against that. But I’ve just been finding so much pleasure in sacrificing sometimes for my husband – going to where he’s working and tidying up his trailer because he couldn’t manage to do it, and bringing him things that will make him feel better, and being a wife in a more classical way.”
She added: “It feels really right to me.”
