I was watching ‘Hugo’ the other day and going, ‘Why is this nominated and we’re not?’ I was slightly miffed,” Radcliffe revealed.

And while he can deal with it, he thinks the film isn’t getting proper recognition: “It’s kind of disheartening. Not nominated: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo or Bridesmaids. Other big shocks–Albert Brooks was not nominated for “Drive,” which is s a shame in the Best Supporting Actor category. His spot went to Max von Sydow in “Extremely.” Another big shock — “Tintin” was not nominated for Best Animated Feature. This is actually shocking. Leonardo DiCaprio was not nominated for “J Edgar” in Best Actor–his spot went to Damien Bachir in “A Better Place.” The other actor nominees were George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Jean DuJardin, and Gary Oldman for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.” The latter film did much better than anyone could have guessed. Best Director went to Michel Hazanavicius, Alexander Payne, Woody Allen, Terrence Malick, and Martin Scorsese. In the end their five films–The Artist, The Descendants, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, and The Help–become the real contestants. No surprises in Best Actress with Meryl Streep, Viola Davis, Michelle Williams, Rooney Mara, and Glenn Close all expected. In Supporting Actress, the only shock was Melissa McCarthy for “Bridesmaids.” Otherwise, Berenice Bejo, Janet McTeer, Octavia Spencer, and Jessica Chastain.

In the end, it’s the movies with the most acting nominations that carry the day. The only exception in this case will be Meryl Streep, for “The Iron Lady.”

Nominees for the 84th Academy Awards
Actor in a Leading Role
Demián Bichir in “A Better Life”
George Clooney in “The Descendants”
Jean Dujardin in “The Artist”
Gary Oldman in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”
Brad Pitt in “Moneyball”

Actor in a Supporting Role
Kenneth Branagh in “My Week with Marilyn”
Jonah Hill in “Moneyball”
Nick Nolte in “Warrior”
Christopher Plummer in “Beginners”
Max von Sydow in “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”

Actress in a Leading Role
Glenn Close in “Albert Nobbs”
Viola Davis in “The Help”
Rooney Mara in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”
Meryl Streep in “The Iron Lady”
Michelle Williams in “My Week with Marilyn”
Actress in a Supporting Role
Bérénice Bejo in “The Artist”
Jessica Chastain in “The Help”
Melissa McCarthy in “Bridesmaids”
Janet McTeer in “Albert Nobbs”
Octavia Spencer in “The Help”

Animated Feature Film
“A Cat in Paris” Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli
“Chico & Rita” Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal
“Kung Fu Panda 2″ Jennifer Yuh Nelson
“Puss in Boots” Chris Miller
“Rango” Gore Verbinski

Art Direction
“The Artist”
Production Design: Laurence Bennett; Set Decoration: Robert Gould
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2″
Production Design: Stuart Craig; Set Decoration: Stephenie McMillan
“Hugo”
Production Design: Dante Ferretti; Set Decoration: Francesca Lo Schiavo
“Midnight in Paris”
Production Design: Anne Seibel; Set Decoration: Hélène Dubreuil
“War Horse”
Production Design: Rick Carter; Set Decoration: Lee Sandales

Cinematography
“The Artist” Guillaume Schiffman
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” Jeff Cronenweth
“Hugo” Robert Richardson
“The Tree of Life” Emmanuel Lubezki
“War Horse” Janusz Kaminski

Costume Design
“Anonymous” Lisy Christl
“The Artist” Mark Bridges
“Hugo” Sandy Powell
“Jane Eyre” Michael O’Connor
“W.E.” Arianne Phillips

Directing
“The Artist” Michel Hazanavicius
“The Descendants” Alexander Payne
“Hugo” Martin Scorsese
“Midnight in Paris” Woody Allen
“The Tree of Life” Terrence Malick

Documentary (Feature)
“Hell and Back Again”
Danfung Dennis and Mike Lerner
“If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front”
Marshall Curry and Sam Cullman
“Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory”
Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs
“Pina”
Wim Wenders and Gian-Piero Ringel
“Undefeated”
TJ Martin, Dan Lindsay and Richard Middlemas

Documentary (Short Subject)
“The Barber of Birmingham: Foot Soldier of the Civil Rights Movement”
Robin Fryday and Gail Dolgin
“God Is the Bigger Elvis”
Rebecca Cammisa and Julie Anderson
“Incident in New Baghdad”
James Spione
“Saving Face”
Daniel Junge and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy
“The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom”
Lucy Walker and Kira Carstensen

Film Editing
“The Artist” Anne-Sophie Bion and Michel Hazanavicius
“The Descendants” Kevin Tent
“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall
“Hugo” Thelma Schoonmaker
“Moneyball” Christopher Tellefsen
Foreign Language Film
“Bullhead” Belgium
“Footnote” Israel
“In Darkness” Poland
“Monsieur Lazhar” Canada
“A Separation” Iran

Makeup
“Albert Nobbs”
Martial Corneville, Lynn Johnston and Matthew W. We have a full list of nominees below, but at first glance, Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” led the pack with 11 nominations. Albert Brooks seems like the most egregious snub. And Stephen Daldry’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” is the Best Picture nom that’s making most people angry. (Except for me, because I loved it.)

We’ll have full analysis on the site this morning, and a separate piece on Academy snubs, as some deserving films and talent ended up on the outside of the Oscar race looking in.

Billy Crystal hosts this year’s Oscars, which will be held Sunday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT. And he recently signed on the dotted line to write the screen adaptation of the smash Broadway musical “Jersey Boys.”

But it’s the three films Logan wrote in 2011 – “Rango,” “Coriolanus” and “Hugo” – that has his name buried deep in the heart of the ongoing Oscar race. “It’s kismit,” Logan told me. “Movies have their own internal time table. You never know when they’re going to achieve critical mass.”

The marathon comes to a head Tuesday morning, when nominations are revealed. We’ll see if Logan can add to his current nomination total of two. (He was recognized for penning “Gladiator” and “The Aviator,” also with Martin Scorsese.)

On the eve of the Oscar nominations, here is the gregarious, honest and refreshingly enthusiastic screenwriter, John Logan:

HollywoodNews.com: You have talked about how long it took to make “Rango.” How collaborative was it? Were you there for most of the process to keep changing dialogue or was it pretty much set in stone?

John Logan: It was pretty established early on, but we spent a long time getting it there. And it was the most mad cap experience I’ve ever had making a movie. We did most of the heavy lifting at Gore Verbinski’s house, away from a studio and away from society. The [creative team] was there, and we would walk around, through the hills, or sit in the backyard and hash things out. This involved a lot of acting on our parts, as we popped up and played almost all of the characters. We wanted the movie to have an off-the-cuff feel, an idiosyncratic energy.

But by the time you get to doing a story reel, the language and dialogue had to be set. And so once we got the actors in to record it – and we sort of filmed them doing it as if we were doing a live play – it was all pretty set. Though we did use that process as an excuse to further explore these characters and to let the actors improvise around the text.

It was more fluid then I think animation usually is.

HollywoodNews.com: And yet, it’s so drastically different than “Coriolanus.” Tell me how you became involved with Ralph Fiennes’ Shakespeare adaptation.

It was years ago, and it came to me because of my great affection for Shakespeare. The reason that I am a writer today is Shakespeare, and just falling in love with theater.

I’d always thought, from the time I started writing screenplays, that sooner or later I would try my hand at adapting Shakespeare. And I always thought “Coriolanus” was the one that I was going to do. I think that it’s a very cinematic story. And very modern. But not in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that anybody in the world would want to make a movie of “Coriolanus” until I met Ralph Fiennes! [Laughs]

We have similar contact. Kathryn Bigelow is a dear friend of both of ours. We met, and he sort of pitched me his take on the movie, which is exactly how I thought it should be … very modern. And we just dove in and did it.

HollywoodNews.com: You always wanted to bring Shakespeare into a modern time?

Completely. Well, with “Coriolanus.” If I were doing “Winter’s Tale,” I wouldn’t. But this, because of the central character, seems to me to be very modern. It’s less about the contemporary parallels, of which there are many. What I find particularly filmic and modern is the character of Coriolanus. He is a very complicated, murky individual. He’s deeply, deeply complex. And one of the things that draws me to people I want to write about is the examination of deeply flawed characters. Whether it’s Charles Foster Kane [in “RKO 281”] or T.E. Lawrence or Norman Bates. The people who we don’t understand, but the camera can let their internal lives come out. And that’s why, to me, “Coriolanus” was going to make such a great movie.

HollywoodNews.com: Shifting to “Hugo,” as we run through your impressive credits from the year, I’m curious if you connected with the topic of film preservation in the same way that Martin Scorsese does?

It’s less about preservation for me as it is understanding where you stand in the continuum of your art form.

I think we all stand in the good grace and on the backs of those who came before us in the movies. It’s shocking to me when I meet film people who’ve never seen “Night of the Hunter,” who don’t know “Vertigo,” “Intolerance,” “Top Hat” or “The Band Wagon.” Who don’t understand who Ben Hecht was. To me, it’s very important to know the lineage of your art form, whether it’s in the theater or movies, which are the two forms that I like to explore.

Clearly, there’s that thing in “Hugo” that is about the acknowledgement of the masters of the form. And I know Marty connected to that, as did I.

HollywoodNews.com: One topic that emerged from “Hugo” was the advancement of 3D technology, as Scorsese figured out how best to use it to aid his storytelling. Does 3D change the way that you write, and if so, how?

It certainly did in my case. Once the decision was made to go to 3D, it encouraged me to write a different way. When I write screenplays, I try to imagine the whole thing in a sort of virtual, 3D environment anyway. So it encouraged me to find ways to go into things and through things, so I wrote more sequences of Hugo going through the tunnels, of the camera going inside of the automaton to see how all of the pieces work. Or simple things like the dogs being a Doberman and two Dachshunds because those are long dogs that would look good in 3D.

HollywoodNews.com: Ah, that’s interesting.

Right. So it absolutely informed a lot of decisions in a really exciting way.

HollywoodNews.com: Would you like to potentially go back and do “The Time Machine” in 3D?

[Laughs] No, I’m leaving H.G. Wells in my past.

Awards Alley brings you the best Oscar coverage. For his efforts, the director’s about to rewarded.

The International 3D Society announced that it will present Scorsese with the Harold Lloyd Award for artistic and technical achievement in 3D. The irony being that Scorsese uses a sequence from Lloyd’s “Safety Last!” during a crucial moment in “Hugo,” so the award couldn’t be more appropriate.

“Marty Scorsese has embodied Harold Lloyd’s vision and passion for captivating movie fans around the world for his entire career,” said Suzanne Lloyd, Lloyd’s granddaughter and chairman of Harold Lloyd Entertainment, who will make the presentation. “With ‘Hugo,’ he has shared his love of filmmaking and filmmakers, in 3D, which would also have thrilled Harold.”

The award will be presented at the Society’s Creative Arts Awards ceremony, Feb. 1 at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

Awards Alley brings you the best Oscar coverage. The occasion was the 100th anniversary of the studio. Stars from The Godfather–like Robert DeNiro, James Caan, and Al Pacino, as well as director Francis Ford Coppola–were joined by famous types like Barbra Streisand, Shirley Maclaine, director Peter Bodganovich, Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman, plus Martin Scorsese, Gore Verbinski, Tom Cruise, and Charlize Theron. Martin Scorsese told me last night at Paramount’s swellegant bash on the studio lot that he had Jane Fonda on one side of him, Ernest Borgnine on the other. “He’s 95 and amazing! Marty exclaimed. More stars mentioned included Eddie Murphy, and former Paramount chief Robert Evans was the only executive included in the photo. “The kid stays in the picture,” quipped our own Leah Sydney, referring to the famous Evans documentary. There were no press people there, I’m told. A full list isn’t yet available. All in all, it’s a coup for studio chief Brad Grey, who’s reshaped Paramount for the 21st century.

To read more go to WWW.SHOWBIZ411.COM

Follow Hollywood News on Twitter for up-to-date news information.

Hollywood News, Hollywood Awards, Awards, Movies, News, Award News, Breaking News, Entertainment News, Movie News, Music News

ANALYSIS: “The Artist” is the Critics’ Choice for Best Movie of 2011 – AWARDS ALLEY

*NEWS

AWARDS

AWARDS ALLEY

CELEBS

FEATURED

HEADLINE

HEADLINES

MOVIES

academy award

American film directors

artist

broadcast film critics association

Cinema of the United States

Entertainment/Culture

film

Human Interest

martin scorsese

oscar

sean penn

the Oscars

Viola Davis

By Sean O’Connell hollywoodnews.com: If the “Critics” have their way this year, the Academy Award will be a silent affair. Though the BFCA went with “The Social Network” last year, a movie that went on to lose to “The King’s Speech,” the group usually lines up with the Academy, and I expect that they will in several categories this year, as well.

If an award existed for best speech of the evening, Viola Davis of “The Help” would win hands down. Her Best Actress speech was emotional, heartfelt, poignant and beautiful. Performances at early awards programs can help set the stage for later awards shows (the Golden Globes, the SAG, the Oscars), and Davis seems well on her way to an Oscar nomination and probable win.

George Clooney, always classy, would come in second. The Oscar winner collected the Best Actor trophy for “The Descendants,” and also presented Sean Penn with the evening’s Joel Siegel Award. (Penn accepted via satellite, as he was in Haiti.)

Overall, Tate Taylor’s “The Help” was a big winner on the evening. In addition to Davis, the movie spawned winners in Best Acting Ensemble and Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer. Right out of the gate, Christopher Plummer continued to fill his mantle with trophies for his work on “Beginners.” He collected the BFCA’s trophy for Best Supporting Actor.

Surprises were in short order, if you have been paying close attention to the awards race. Gore Verbinski’s “Rango” likely locked up the Best Animated Feature Oscar with a win at the CCMAs. The screenplay categories still have some flexibility to them, but honestly, I could see BFCA choices “Moneyball” (for Adapted) and “Midnight In Paris” (for Original) going the way of the Academy.

But the highlight of the evening likely belonged to Martin Scorsese, who collected the evening’s Music+Film Award, which was preceded by a stellar clip package celebrating the legend’s body of work. Multiple directors who took the stage after the reel commented on the power of Scorsese’s images. On a night filled with beauty, I have to agree.

Here’s a complete list of the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards winners:

BEST PICTURE
“The Artist”

BEST ACTOR
George Clooney – “The Descendants”

BEST ACTRESS
Viola Davis – “The Help”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Christopher Plummer – “Beginners”

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Octavia Spencer – “The Help”

BEST YOUNG ACTOR/ACTRESS
Thomas Horn – “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”

BEST ACTING ENSEMBLE
“The Help”

BEST DIRECTOR
Michel Hazanavicius – “The Artist”

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
“Midnight in Paris” – Woody Allen

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
“Moneyball” – Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin, Story by Stan Chervin

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY (TIE)
“The Tree of Life”
AND
“War Horse”

BEST ART DIRECTION
“Hugo”

BEST EDITING
“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”

BEST COSTUME DESIGN
“The Artist”

BEST MAKE-UP
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2”

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”

BEST SOUND
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2”

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
“Rango”

BEST ACTION MOVIE
“Drive”

BEST COMEDY
“Bridesmaids”

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
“A Separation”

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
“George Harrison: Living in the Material World”

BEST SONG
“Life’s a Happy Song” – The Muppets
Performed by Jason Segel, Amy Adams and Walter
Written by Bret McKenzie and The Muppets

BEST SCORE
“The Artist”

JOEL SIEGEL AWARD
Sean Penn

CRITICS’ CHOICE MUSIC+FILM AWARD
Martin Scorsese

Awards Alley brings you the best Oscar coverage.
