Sting celebrates 60th birthday with Bruce, Gaga, Stevie, and more

HollywoodNews.com: Exclusive: Sting’s 60th birthday party at the Beacon Theater was a four hour celebration of the rock star’s career and songs with his own band and almost a dozen famous musicians performing his music. They included Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Herbie Hancock, Lady Gaga. Branford Marsalis, will.i.am, Mary J. Blige, Chris Botti, Jimmy Nail, and Met Opera star Bryn Terfel. The latter opened the second act of the show with a rendition of “Roxanne” certain to become part of pop history–it was hilarious and serious at the same time, and showed how Sting’s punkiest new wave music has resonance in many forms.
There were many extraordinary moments on stage and off, where documentary maker Joe Berlinger brought the primary member of the just released Memphis 3, Jason Baldwin. And there were also Robert Downey and his wife Susan (Downey was also in the show), Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Tom Brokaw, Jake Gyllenhaal, directors Bennett Miller (“Moneyball”) and Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan”), actresses Lorraine Bracco and Melanie Griffith, Fisher Stevens, and Harvey Weinstein, as well as Patti Scialfa (Mrs, Springsteen), designer Kai Milla Morris (Mrs. Wonder), and Alexa Ray Joel with her dad’s new girlfriend. Michael J. Fox and wife Tracy Pollan attended the afternoon run through only.
It was family night for Sting, too, with his brother and both of his sisters, plus, of course, the magnificent Trudie Styler (Mrs. Sting) radiant in a slinky Pucci gown, and all six of their kids including Sting’s eldest Joe Sumner, who sang with his father on the poignant “Why Do I Cry for You?” dedicated to Sting’s late father. Also present were about a dozen or so of Sting’s pals from his early days in Newcastle, England including the musicians who played with him in jazz groups like the Phoenix Jazzman and Last Exit.

Charlie Sheen has Michael J. Fox’s support in getting job back

HollywoodNews.com: Charlie Sheen has a much-loved actor backing him up when it comes to going back to work, although the whole thing is pretty unlikely.
Michael J. Fox is supporting Sheen as the two once worked together on ‘Spin City,’ states Hollyscoop. “They should let him go back to work and he should do his job, which he’s uniquely qualified to do. He’s a talented man, he’s a good guy and I’d like to see him go back,” Fox told ‘Entertainment Tonight.’
And while it’s a nice thought, it seems almost 100% likely that Sheen will not be offered his ‘Two and a Half Men’ gig back.

Oprah with guest Meredith Baxter

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: UNTIED: It was a very powerful hour of television on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ yesterday with guest Meredith Baxter.
The actress, out promoting her new memoir, is still very emotionally raw when talking about the abuse she says she suffered during her marriage to actor David Birney.
It was a deeply unhappy time that led to her drinking too much while playing the role of the mom on the popular sitcom ‘Family Ties.’ Michael Gross, who played her husband on the show, was a surprise guest and emotionally recalled when she once broke down on the set over her desperate unhappiness after hiding it for years.
“I felt a fraud in my own life…There was an intense desire for secrecy. ‘Don’t tell anyone that this goes on in the house’…I [didn't] want anyone to know the man I’m married to treats me this way.”
Three of Meredith’s five kids were also on hand as was her partner since 2005, Nancy Locke, and former TV son Michael J. Fox appeared via video with warm and supportive words.
Baxter says she was so emotionally shut down her entire life she did not even realize she was gay until after her third divorce. She added, however, that she never felt all that thrilled about men.
“I was a very conventional girl,” she said. “I was raised in a household where my mother got married and I thought that was what you did.”

Elton John and royal wedding, Andy Cohen on Oscars and more

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: Elton John, who was a close friend of the late Princess Diana, has confirmed that he and partner David Furnish have been invited to Prince William and his fiancee Kate Middleton’s wedding in London next month.
Elton had told HollyScoop.com he was not expecting to be invited: “I don’t know them (princes William and Harry) very well. I’ve only met them twice – once when they were young and once at the Diana Memorial Concert… I knew their mother but that is the only thing. I’m not playing at the wedding. I haven’t been asked and I don’t expect to be asked.”
But in the end, Elton made the cut. He so memorably performed a special version of “Candle in the Wind” at Princess Diana’s funeral which ended up being an even bigger hit than the song was the first time around!
BOOK TOUR: Meredith Baxter’s appearance on ‘The Today Show’ yesterday certainly got a lot of buzz with her allegation that former husband, actor David Birney, had beaten her during their marriage.
Today, she is the guest on ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ as she continues to promote the heck out of her new memoir ‘Untied: A Memoir of Family, Fame and Floundering.’
Baxter played the oldest daughter on the ABC drama ‘Family’ before going on to star as the mom on the long-running NBC comedy ‘Family Ties.’ She later received an Emmy nomination for playing convicted murderer Betty Broderick.
Oprah has lined up her ‘Family Ties’ hubby Michael Gross as a surprise guest and Michael J. Fox, her TV son, appears via a videotape message.
NOT A FAN: You know how most people, myself included, were delighted by the performance of the choir from Staten Island’s PS 22 at the end of the Oscar telecast?
They sang “Over the Rainbow” and were joined by all the night’s winners. I thought it was a graceful and uplifting way to wrap up an evening that had few highlights or surprises.
But Bravo’s Andy Cohen hated it!

Michael Jackson used to sing to Mickey Rooney

By Roger Friedman
HollywoodNews.com: Mickey Rooney called me on Monday night with his talented wife, Jan. I was thrilled to hear from them. I told them I was worried this year because I hadn’t seen them at the Oscars. Our meetings on the red carpet are a tradition.
“We were there!” Mickey and Jan said in unison. “We missed you, too!” They’ve been touring, doing their musical sketch show everywhere.
Do you understand that Mickey will turn 90 in September? He is the elder statesman of Hollywood. When Mickey was a kid, he was Justins Bieber and Timberlake, Michael J. Fox, and a little David Spade all rolled into one. He was Warren Beatty before there was Warren Beatty. I mean, the boy got around!
So Mickey wanted me to tell everyone that at Saturday’s Michael Jackson event at the Bev Hilton, it was his devoted Jan who knocked everyone out. “I just introduced her. She sang “You Are Not Alone,” Michael’s song, and Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile.”
Jan said: “You know, Michael used to call us up and sing with us on the phone.” She got a little teary. “His death is such a tragedy.”
The Rooneys are busy, busy. They were recently guests at an intimate dinner thrown for them by Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw. The other guests were J.J. Abrams and his wife, Katie.

When Celebrities – Like Bret Michaels – Show True Grit, the Whole World Benefits

By Stacy Jenel Smith
hollywoodnews.com: Will Bret Michaels make the live finale of “Celebrity Apprentice” tonight – exactly one month and two days after the brain hemorrhage that could easily have killed him? And within days of his “warning stroke” and the discovery of a hole in his heart?
If anyone can pull off such a feat, rock and reality star Michaels is a good bet. He learned to battle through physical challenges from the time he was six and was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes.
“When you’re five to eight years old and you find out you’re going to have to take insulin for the rest of your life, its pretty depressing. It’s heartbreaking,” he recalled in an interview a couple of years back. “But I just looked at it and embraced it. I said, ‘I’m still going to go out and enjoy my life. I’m still going to make music and ride motorcycles and get tattoos.’ I just gotta work a hell of a lot harder to take care of myself.”
Michaels says being able to go to a camp for diabetics as a child made all the difference in his world. “My mom was one of the counselors and later I was a counselor at a diabetic camp in Pennsylvania. I go back there every so many years to say ‘This is how I did it. This is what you gotta do.’”
He’s also actively raised funds for kids to go to such camps in various ways. In 2005, an unorthodox campaign — with the mark of Michaels’ creativity now familiar to “Apprentice” fans — involved selling a controversial t-shirt that had a photo of him shirtless on the front and the words, “Bret Michaels Diabetic,” along with the number of injections he’d taken as of the day they shot the picture – some 253, 210. And then the words, “Fear Nothing: Survive It.”
Michaels is displaying that same kind of courage and grit getting through his current crisis, and in so doing, he’s serving as an inspiration to millions.
When so often the media is focused on negative role models of the celebrity world, it’s worth noting that there are dozens of personalities, like Michaels, who set examples of courage and perseverance every year. Speaking of those who’ve faced diabetes as just one example, we have the likes of Halle Berry, Mary Tyler Moore, Gary Owens and [...]
