James Franco Named Grand Marshal for 55th Annual Daytona 500

James Franco, star of the Disney fantastical adventure “Oz The Great and Powerful,” which is scheduled for release on March 8, will serve as Grand Marshal for the 55th running of the Daytona 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Daytona International Speedway. The race is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on FOX and will also be broadcasted on FOX Deportes, MRN Radio and Sirius XM Satellite Radio.
Franco will give the starting command, “Drivers start your engines,” in “The Great American Race.” He’ll also be introduced at the driver’s meeting, participate in pre-race ceremonies and ride in one of the Grand Marshal cars during the pace laps prior to the green flag of the 200-lap, 500-mile race.
“We’re excited to welcome James Franco and have him take part in the pre-race festivities for the Daytona 500,” Daytona International Speedway President Joie Chitwood III said. “In front of thousands of race fans and millions more watching on FOX, we’re looking forward to hearing James’ enthusiastic starting command to kick off the Daytona 500 and the new NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.”
“Oz The Great and Powerful,” directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting.
Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must
find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.
Joe Roth produced “Oz The Great and Powerful,” with screen story by Mitchell Kapner and screenplay by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire.
Franco will next be seen in Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers.” His credits include “127 Hours,” in which he received a Best Actor Oscar® nomination, “ the “Spider-Man” trilogy, “Milk,” “Pineapple Express” and most recently “Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”
Franco joins the prestigious list of previous Daytona 500 Grand Marshals including John Travolta, [...]

21 Jump Street topped the box office this weekend with a whopping estimated $35 million

By Scott Mendelson
HollywoodNews.com: There isn’t anything too surprising about a well-marketed and well-reviewed mainstream comedy opening well on its debut weekend, especially when there are no new releases to compete against. Still, 21 Jump Street topped the box office this weekend with a whopping estimated $35 million. If that number holds up, it will be the seventh-biggest debut for an R-rated comedy ever, as well as the fifth-biggest R-rated comedy debut for a non-sequel and the largest such debut outside of summer. Sony knew they had a winner on their hands, as the $42 million-budgeted film was as much a commentary on the current trend of recycling brand names as an example of such. They’ve been screening it out the wazoo, building solid buzz and strong word-of-mouth, for months on end. Oddly enough, the film earned just a ‘B’ from Cinemascore, and I’m frankly puzzled by that. Yes, audiences under 25 gave it an A, but it’s such a winning film that I’m shocked it’s not playing well across the board (my 61-year old father-in-law laughed his butt off at the press screening). It’s a terrifically funny and uncommonly warm and sweet (for an R-rated action comedy) picture, so one would presume that it will have legs in the coming weeks. Hopefully Sony will focus its second round of advertising on getting females into the theater (although it played 47% female and 50% over/under 25 years old) by emphasizing how *not* sexist and/or homophobic the picture is. It faces no direct competition (aside from the all-consuming hurricane that is The Hunger Games next weekend) until April 6th, when Universal debuts American Reunion. This is another big win for Channing Tatum. This is his third-biggest debut behind The Vow ($40 million) and GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra ($54 million). He also has a second GI Joe movie as well as a Steven Soderbergh reunion in Magic Mike both opening on June 29th. This is Jonah Hill’s second biggest live-action debut behind the $54 million opening of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
Following last week’s semi-wide release of Friends With Kids (which expanded to 640 screens this weekend and grossed another $1.5 million, dropping 25%), we have three more theoretically mainstream films that have been relegated to the arthouse circuit. Will Ferrell’s telanoleva satire Casa [...]

“The Vow” and “Safe House” fend off “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”

By Scott Mendelson
HollywoodNews.com: It was yet another ‘photo-finish’ at the box office over this President’s Day weekend, but as always, it’s the hard numbers rather than the arbitrary rankings that matter. But since we need to decide which movies to discuss first, in order we shall go! For the moment, it appears that Safe House will top the charts in its second weekend after barely missing the top slot last weekend. It grossed $23.9 million over the Fri-Sun weekend and $28 million over the holiday. Safe House will have grossed $82 million by Monday, a rather huge total for Mr. Washington. In just eleven days, Safe House is Washington’s 7th-biggest grosser, out-grossing such films as Training Day ($76 million), Man On Fire ($77 million), and Unstoppable ($81 million). Barring a complete collapse, Safe House should become Denzel Washington’s fifth $100 million grosser over the next weekend, with an outside shot of eclipsing the $130 million gross of American Gangster, which is currently his top grosser. While we can debate how much credit co-star Ryan Reynolds gets for this one (he certainly didn’t hurt…), Safe House is already his fourth-biggest grosser and will likely out-gross Green Lantern’s $116 million total in a few weeks. I’m frankly shocked at the strong legs for this one, as it’s certainly one of Washington’s worst genre entries in a long career with a number of solid adult-skewing action pictures (it looks like it was shot through a puke filter and edited in a blender, plus the script is so generic it could have been written in a Mad Libs book). Still, star-power is a rare thing these days, and Denzel Washington clearly has it.
So does Channing Tatum and, in the right project, Rachel McAdams, so it will be interesting to see how The Vow’s popularity affect next month’s 21 Jump Street. The Vow is estimated to gross around $23.6 million for the Fri-Sun period and $27.4 million for the Fri-Sun period. No matter who ends up on top, both films exhibited strong holds. With $89 million by Monday, The Vow is already Screen Gems’s highest grossing film ever, topping the $80 million total of Dear John. The 43% drop for The Vow is slightly smaller than the 47% drop for Dear John, but the new film was bolstered by a [...]

“Ghost Rider” sequel drops poster, new trailer

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: UPDATE! The first official teaser trailer for Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor’s “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” is online and posted, below!

From earlier:
Nicolas Cage returns to the demonic role of Johnny Blaze, the motorcycle-riding Marvel superhero who embarks on a new adventure against the devil in Eastern Europe. Ciaran Hinds, Violante Placido, Idris Elba and Johnny Whitworth co-star in this sequel, which we are expecting to be a gonzo as Neveldine and Taylor’s “Crank” films … because we know that Cage has the ability to crank it up to 11 when necessary.
We’ll have the trailer on the site once it hits. The film reaches theaters in 3D and 2D theaters next year. Until then, SuperheroHype has the film’s new poster. It’s below:

Jennifer Hudson “Winne Mandela” Movie

Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard will debut their “Winnie” {Mandela) movie, directed by Darryl Roodt. Nicole Kidman and Nicolas Cage will bring Joel Schumacher’s “Trespass.” (I’m crossing my fingers on that one.) Oscar winning “Precious” screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher has “Violet and Daisy,” which he also directed. Catherine Deneuve and her talented daughter Chiara Mastroianni are in “Beloved,” by Christopher Honore. So many films, so little time.

Nic Cage back to work after weekend arrest

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Nicolas Cage isn’t going to let a pesky thing like an arrest for domestic abuse stop him from earning a paycheck.
The Oscar-winning actor returned to work in New Orleans shortly after being detained for domestic abuse, disturbing the peace and public intoxication over the weekend. But those on the set tell the media that Cage is the ultimate professional, and never causes any problems on set.
‘He is always extremely professional. He is never late, no tantrums,” a source told People.com.
‘He is a dedicated actor when he is at work and I don’t think people would hire him so much if he wasn’t. He’s in fine shape and ready to work.’

Nicholas Cage fought the law and the law won

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Bail has been set at $11,000 for Nicholas Cage, who was arrested in New Orleans this morning following a skirmish with his wife. Police records indicate that Cage was arrested on counts of domestic abuse and disturbing the peace. Though the actor’s wife and the target of the abuse, Alice, had the opportunity to press charges, she did not. Cage was reportedly released after posting bail this afternoon.
The altercation occurred while Cage was in town to shoot a new movie, “Medallion”. Witnesses including a taxi driver and other bystanders saw Cage push his wife during a shouting match between the two. When police arrived on the scene, a reportedly drunken Cage not only refused to quiet down–he dared police to arrest him. The arrest marked the latest in a series of legal and criminal troubles in which Cage fought the law and the law won.

What Nicolas Cage was doing before he was arrested

HollywoodNews.com: Nicolas Cage seems to have had quite a night before he was arrested in New Orleans and now the details are coming out.
It is being reported that before his arrest, Cage was at a tattoo parlor trying to get some ink, states TMZ. He reportedly seemed drunk when he came in asking to get a tattoo.
Cage also allegedly asked the employees there to call the cops because he couldn’t remember where he lived. The question of where he lived is reportedly why he was fighting with his wife when he got arrested.
Do you think this was just a drunk mistake?

Cage was originally arrested on domestic violence and disturbing the peace matters. Chapman reportedly later posted the $11,000 bond that same day, states TMZ.
Chapman’s wife, Beth, suggested on Twitter that this is what happened: “My guy just walked out of the jail damn new Orleans 8 hours holy cow that’s a lot of time to Process one guy.”
