Ice-T, Jennifer Nettles: Let’s Help our Vets find homes – Veterans Matter

Over a dozen celebrities and Cumulus Media have come together to help the innovative, Ohio-based Veterans Matter program kick off a campaign on Memorial Day to help house as many of the 57,000 homeless veterans as soon as possible.
“Thousands of veterans are homeless and living on the streets of our nation tonight. Streets where they are being beaten, robbed, even killed. Let’s take care of our own,” says Ice-T of the Veterans Matter campaign to house veterans.
The program’s growing roster of support includes:
Darius Rucker
Darryl Worley
Dusty Hill
Emerson Drive
Heart
Ice-T
Jennifer Nettles
John Fogerty
John Mellencamp
Kid Rock
Kix Brooks
Mitch Albom
Natalie Stovall+The Drive
Stevie Nicks

Each has voiced public services announcements now airing on Cumulus Media properties nationwide urging all Americans to help our nation’s homeless veterans get housed.
Text “VETS” to 41444 and click through to donate any amount on their credit card.
Or donate online at the organizations website, veteransmatter.org.
The Veterans Matter program was started in 2012 in Toledo, Ohio, by Ken Leslie, a once homeless activist who had become aware that the primary obstacle facing many local homeless veterans eligible for long-term housing assistance was the lack of a rental deposit. Veterans Matter was created as a simple solution to that simple problem by paying the deposit directly to landlord and has expanded to help house veterans in six states.
The program’s simplicity and demonstrated success rate attracted the attention of Dusty Hill of ZZ Top and John Mellencamp, who each helped raise funds to house homeless veterans in their home states, accounting for a significant portion of the almost $250,000 raised so far. 100% of the money raised goes to the program, as overhead costs are donated in-kind by Leslie’s company and other friends. 1Matters.org, a local non-profit, attained national visibility when John Mellencamp visited Toledo some years ago, is the fiscal agent for the program.
“Cumulus, the artists, and all of those involved in helping Veterans Matter are here because they fought for us. Now we fight for them. Veterans Matter,” Leslie said.

Obama’s America $6.2 million doesn’t mean anything

HollywoodNews.com: Oh my, another film explicitly targeting an undeserved niche did exceptional business almost exclusively with that niche. In a sane industry that would be called smart business, but the studios tend to treat it as a *shock* and write it off as a fluke.
It was no shock to anyone paying attention during the week, especially when the film was announced to be expanding on over 1,000 screens this weekend. With the weak slate of new releases and little holdover interest, the market was primed for a solid debut for something preaching to a very devoted choir.
First as foremost, 2016: Obama’s America earned about 1/4 as much this weekend as Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 did over its opening weekend on about as many screens eight years ago.
As not-president John Kerry can attest, even the most obscenely successful political documentary of all time ($23 million opening weekend, $119 million domestic total) didn’t help John Kerry defeat George W. Bush in the 2004 election (even if we can dispute the results in Ohio, Bush won the popular vote by three million).
So no, the fact that a directly-targeted group of anti-Obama moviegoers gave 2016: Obama’s America $6.2 million doesn’t mean anything more than the piss-poor box office of last year’s The Undefeated (essay) in terms of predicting an upcoming presidential election.

Woman claims Chad Kroeger cheated on her with Avril Lavigne

HollywoodNews.com: Avril Lavigne’s engagement with Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger came as a surprise to many, but it seems it was the biggest surprise for one woman.
A woman in the Ohio area is claiming that she was dating Kroeger for years after his previous relationship with his longtime girlfriend, Marianne Goriuk, ended states RadarOnline. Kristen DeWitt claims that they split in May, which would mean that her relationship with Kroeger overlapped with his romance with Lavigne as they have allegedly been together for six months.
“[T]he moment u find out ur ex of four months engaged the girl he was cheating on you with! #classic,” DeWitt commented on Twitter after the news broke.
Adding to this story, Kroeger spoke to ‘Dave & Jimmy’ from WNCI radio in April when he revealed, “Yes I’m dating a girl from Ohio.”

“Ruby Sparks” Cast and Filmmakers at New York Press Day

by Joey Magidson
HollywoodNews.com: I had the privilege of being invited to represent The Awards Circuit at the “Ruby Sparks” New York Press Day, held at the Crosby Street Hotel in Lower Manhattan. It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of this film, so I obviously jumped at the opportunity.
The schedule had roundtable and 1 on 1 interviews arranged for directors Jonathan Dayton/Valerie Faris, star Paul Dano, and co-star/writer Zoe Kazan. I participated in all of the roundtables, and was able to secure 1 on 1 interviews with Dano, Dayton, and Faris. Unfortunately, Kazan was unavailable for 1 on 1. I think there’s some interesting tidbits found here, and it just highlights more an absolutely delightful movie. I chose to organize this article by the talent involved, since each were brought in to speak separately. I pulled out the best quotes and citations to share.

Elton John Does a Lot of Good – Donated $8.3 million last year

HollywoodNews.com: The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) today announced over $3.2 million in new grants that will further its mission to assist the most marginalized populations vulnerable to HIV infection. These new awards brought EJAF’s final total grant-making commitments for calendar 2011 to a record $8,316,871, with disbursements totaling $7,006,871 last year.
These grants represent EJAF’s continuing commitment to fund demographics and geographic regions that are seriously impacted by HIV/AIDS and under-served by traditional funders. Grant expenditures totaling $3,221,622 were awarded for 19 new and 29 renewal grants, including:
* health services for Black women, one of the highest HIV-impacted populations in this country;
* innovative programs focused on the health and rights of gay and bisexual men throughout the U.S.;
* programs designed to help people with HIV who are leaving prison to access and stay on treatment and maintain their health as they reintegrate into society;
* small community grants supporting services for gay men throughout Latin America;
* clinical and mental health services for vulnerable populations in the Caribbean; and
* additional funding totaling $1.6 million over two years to support over 50 community organizations providing needle exchange and harm reduction services for injection drug users.
“Through the efforts of hundreds of privately-funded syringe access programs, HIV incidence due to injection drug use in the U.S. has declined from 25% of all infections in 2000 to 9% today,” said Executive Director Scott Campbell. “Scaled-up syringe access programming could bring injection-related HIV infections down to zero. Given Congress’ unfortunate reinstatement of the ban on the use of federal funding for syringe exchange programs, EJAF’s increased investments as one of the top three funders in this field are particularly crucial.”
“For twenty years, EJAF has remained consistent in our mission, even as we’ve increased the scope and reach of our grant-making,” added Chairman David Furnish. “Our most recent grants continue this historic focus, dedicating critical funding to the most urgent and under-resourced aspects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.”
About EJAF
The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) was established as a nonprofit organization in the United States in 1992 and as a registered charity in the United Kingdom in 1993 by Sir Elton John. Together, both entities have raised more than $225 million for worthy programs in 55 countries around the globe since inception. Today, the Foundation is […]

“Avengers” moves into NASA facility in Ohio

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Filming for Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers” moved into Plum Brook’s Space Power Facility in Sandusky, Ohio where they are expected to take advantage of the location’s vacuum chamber. The device reportedly allows you to mirror the gravity-free qualities of outer space.
The Sandusky Register (via ComingSoon) reports that the production is expected to stay at Plum Brook for the rest of the week.
“It’s believed, however, that Samuel L. Jackson is the only big star from the film who is filming at Plum Brook,” the newspaper reports.
“Plum Brook has guards who control entrance into the facility, allowing visitors to enter only after showing their identification. … This week, ‘they have their regular security and a little beefed up to make sure,’ [NASA spokeswoman Sally] Harrington said.”
No other stars outside of Jackson? If that’s accurate, it blasts a hole in my theory that Whedon would be filming a large-scale outer space battle in the NASA facility.
Whedon’s “Avengers” film still has an air of mystery around it, which is thrilling. I’d like to go into this blockbuster as clean as possible, though that’s likely impossible. The movie kicks off next summer’s blockbuster season with a May 4, 2012 release date.

Mila Kunis apparently doesn’t want to be one of the goddesses

HollywoodNews.com: While Charlie Sheen would apparently love to add Mila Kunis to his goddess group, it sounds like the young actress is going to pass.
When Sheen revealed at his Ohio show that Kunis can have the third goddess spot, the actress was apparently creeped out, states PopEater.
While Kunis hasn’t commented on the matter, it is reported that the thought grossed her out. Although she can take a joke, Kunis reportedly doesn’t even want to think about joining his harem.
Who should be Charlie Sheen’s third goddess?

Charlie Sheen can’t quite handle New York

HollywoodNews.com: Charlie Sheen’s live show finally made it to Radio City Music Hall in New York, but it seems that he might have lost some of his magic.
While the crowd was apparently with him at the beginning, he reportedly lost them in the end, states TMZ. His stories reportedly didn’t make much sense and his show ended up being 30 minutes shorter than his Ohio ones.
Sheen reportedly ended the show abruptly and was mostly treated to some boos from the audience. Sheen also allegedly ignored his fans as he made his way out.
Do you think Charlie Sheen will get it together for his next show?
