“How to Train Your Dragon 2”: What’s Up with the Awards Race

Directed by: Dean DeBlois
Written by: Dean DeBlois
Main Cast: Voices of Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Djimon Hounsou, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, Kristen Wiig, and others
Past Oscar relations: The first film in the franchise was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score
Here now we have a brand new article in this series of mine on 2015 contenders hoping to compete for some sort of Oscar attention at the upcoming 2015 ceremony. Next up for us is the sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2, which looks to please audiences as much as the first one did. From there, it’s potentially on to Oscar contention!
This is the second film in a now franchise, based on a highly popular series of books. How to Train Your Dragon 2 features a top notch voice cast, with folks such as Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Djimon Hounsou, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, Kristen Wiig, and many others lending their talents to the movie. All signs point to this being a big success and a likely player in the Best Animated Feature field. Can it go further though?
What this flick has going in its favor is highly positive reviews and a built in audience that tried to make the last one an awards contender. The early word says that this one is just as good, if not a bit better, than the first How to Train Your Dragon, which is no small achievement. This makes it more or less a surefire nominee in Best Animated Feature and perhaps even the frontrunner right now (give or take how The Lego Movie ages over the course of the rest of the season). Only halfway through the year, that’s a a pretty solid spot to be in.
Working against How to Train Your Dragon 2 is the fact that animation has had a tougher time of late. Since the sliding scale in Best Picture has been implemented, no cartoon has gotten into the major categories, so it’s possible that the time for that sort of a citation has come and gone. If Frozen couldn’t do it last year, one has to think that this year we won’t see anything from the animated category particularly break through. It’s not impossible, but I wouldn’t bet on it happening.
So, can this be a player at all? I’d say […]

Spotlight on the Stars: Kevin Costner

Here we go with another installment of my Spotlight on the Stars series. Each week, I’ll look at an actor/actress/filmmaker that I’d like to celebrate in some kind of a way. It could be due to something of theirs coming out that weekend (like last week and this week, for example) or just because I feel they deserve to have a moment in the sun, but each time it’ll be a bit of positivity about someone who I’d like to pay tribute to.
For this week’s piece (number three overall so far), I wanted to take a look at our first male actor…Kevin Costner. Some see him as a bit of a has been, but I disagree and not only still see a movie star, but an underrated actor as well. Costner is a throwback to an older generation of actor. Very much a man’s man and a real movie star, but one with a softness to him as well. His best performances have perfectly highlighted that. He can be an excellent action hero, that’s for sure, but I’ve always preferred him as a bit more of a working man, be it as a baseball player or just a middle class Joe like he was in The Company Men.

Yes, his best films often involve sports (particularly baseball), but how is that a knock against him? Especially with the very good Draft Day hitting theaters this weekend, it’s just evidence of him knowing where he really fits and playing to that. From Bull Durham to Field of Dreams to For Love of the Game and Tin Cup (and also The Upside of Anger, where he plays a retired player), the sports genre really seems to serve him well. That being said, he’s hardly out of his element when removed from athletics.
Costner has usually challenged himself more than he’s been given credit for, especially considering his directorial career. He won Best Director and Best Picture for Dances with Wolves, and even his projects that were deemed unsuccessful weren’t for a lack of ambition. He can be a risk taker behind the camera, even as he’s a calming and grounded presence in front of it. That’s particularly on display with Draft Day, even when his character is far from calm.
Overall, Costner is am underrated actor with an undeniable screen presence, like I mentioned above. As he begins to enter somewhat of a Hollywood elder […]

Oscars®: Noah – What’s up with the 2015 Awards Race

Directed by: Darren Aronofsky
Written by: Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel
Main Cast: Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone, Douglas Booth, Marton Csokas, Nick Nolte, Mark Margolis, and Frank Langella
Past Oscar relations: Crowe won Best Actor for Gladiator and has two other acting nominations, Hopkins won Best Actor for The Silence of the Lambs and has three other acting nominations, Connolly won Best Supporting Actress for A Beautiful Mind, Nolte has three acting nominations, Langella has one acting nominations, Aronofsky has a nomination for Best Director, and DP Matthew Libatique has a nomination for Best Cinematography
Here we go now with our first true article in this new series on 2014 contenders. First up is Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, which again brings him together with the likes of Jennifer Connelly, composer Clint Mansell, co-writer Ari Handel, and cinematographer Matthew Libatique, along with newcomers like Russell Crowe, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Winstone, Emma Watson, and Logan Lerman. It’s a retelling of the story of Noah (shockingly enough), though apparently more in line with Aronofsky’s prior work like The Fountain than more straightforward biblical tales to date.

What this movie has going in its favor is quite simply Aronofsky. He’s a visionary director and this has long been a passion project of his. I’ll have a bit more to say about passion projects this weekend, but I’m someone who’s always interested in them and how much potential they have. Aronofsky finally caught the Academy’s attention last time around with Black Swan (though both Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler scored acting citations), so if Oscar voters are now on his wavelength, we could see them look to honor his ambition here.
Working against Noah is publicity that the flick will get because of its origins, as opposed to the final product itself. Early reviews have been mixed but mostly positive, so it’s not a question of if the film is any good or not, but if it’ll be given a real chance. My heart wants to say that folks will look past the potential protests from the religious right, but my head thinks that it’ll become something all too easy to ignore for voters. Taking into account that it’s an early year release as well, and the movie clearly will have an uphill battle for any major recognition, to say the least.
So, can this be a player at all? My gut says […]

Eva Longoria dating or not dating Mark Sanchez?

HollywoodNews.com: Recent rumors came out linking Eva Longoria to New York Jets player Mark Sanchez, but it seems that isn’t completely true.
It is now being reported that the two are not dating despite how much they have allegedly been hanging out together, states Hollyscoop. They have been spotted out to dinner and shows together ever since things ended between her and Eduardo Cruz.
Some of that time together has been with other friends, so it is possible that they just have mutual friends. Although, they could be starting a new romance from their friendship.

HollywoodNews.com: Kelly Ripa finally has a permanent cohost in place for ‘LIVE!’ and it seems that former football player Michael Strahan was the lucky chosen one.
Strahan was chosen as the cohost out of 59 contenders to replace Regis Philbin after he retired in November 2011, states UsMagazine.com. “Before I bring him out, I just want to take a minute, sincerely from the bottom of my heart, to thank all of you. You stood by us . . You’re the best audience. I’m not kidding. I love you guys. I really appreciate all of your input during our co-host search,” Ripa commented to the viewers.
And Strahan couldn’t be more excited to be the new cohost: “You know how they say it’s a dream come true? I truly can’t say this, because I didn’t know I could dream this.”

New York Giants player thinks Gisele Bundchen should stay out of it

HollywoodNews.com: Gisele Bundchen got in some hot water when she commented about the other Patriots players – not her husband, Tom Brady – basically being the reason the team lost the Super Bowl.
Now, one player on the New York Giants, Brandon Jacobs, is commenting about what he thinks Bundchen should be doing instead of saying things like that, states UsMagazine.com. “She just needs to continue to be cute and shut up,” Jacobs allegedly told reporters.
And it seems others agree a little but also understand her position as Patriots player Osi Umenyiora commented, “She’s supposed to stay out of things like that. But at the end of the day that’s their relationship and she has the right to say whatever she wants to.”
What did you think of the comments?

Famous Women Who Dated Footballers: Photo Gallery – Feb. 3, 2012

HollywoodNews.com: With the Super Bowl just around the corner on Sunday, we’re taking a look at some of the famous women who have dated, married or even broken up with their famous football player beaus.
While some celebrities prefer basketball and baseball players, these women all tried at relationships with footballers.
Enjoy the gallery below!

Gisele Bundchen’s husband, Tom Brady, is playing in the Super Bowl this weekend. But Kim Kardashian can kind of relate as she famously dated Reggie Bush while he won the Super Bowl with the Saints.
Currently, both Jessica Simpson and Kristin Cavallari are pregnant with their footballers while Kim Zolciak just had a baby with her new football husband and Kendra Wilkinson is enjoying raising her baby with her man.
And maybe things didn’t work out with Jamie Lynn Sigler and Carrie Underwood when they dated footballers, but both have moved on while Hayden Panettiere is reportedly starting up a romance with Scotty McKnight.
But it may be Angie Harmon who is showing these women that a relationship with a football player can work as she has been married to former player Jason Seahorn for over ten years now.
