George Clooney Seeks to Expose Those Who Finance/Profit From Wars in Africa

The Enough Project announced the launch of THE SENTRY, a new investigative initiative that seeks to dismantle the networks of perpetrators, facilitators, and enablers who fund and profit from Africa’s deadliest conflicts. The Sentry’s arrival comes as President Obama prepares for an historic trip to Africa later this week.
Co-founded by George Clooney and John Prendergast, building on lessons learned from their earlier Satellite Sentinel Project initiative, The Sentry uses open source data collection, field research, and state-of-the-art network analysis technology to track and analyze how conflict is financed, sustained, and monetized. The new website for The Sentry, www.TheSentry.org, also features a secure portal for the confidential and anonymous submission of tips, leaks, and information.
John Prendergast, co-founder of TheSentry.org, said: “Conventional tools of diplomacy usually have not helped end conflicts because they don’t alter the calculations of those fueling war and committing atrocities. Given the current profitability of conflict, new efforts must center on how to make war more costly than peace. The objective of The Sentry is to follow the money and deny those war profiteers the proceeds from their crimes.”
George Clooney, co-founder of The Sentry, said: “Real leverage for peace and human rights will come when the people who benefit from war will pay a price for the damage they cause.”

The Sentry today also published four Country Briefs detailing the nexus of conflict, corruption, and violent kleptocracy in South Sudan, Sudan, Central Africa Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Sentry Analyst Akshaya Kumar pointed out, “The points of convergence where illicit schemes rely on legitimate global financial and transport infrastructure, at times represent the most profitable links in the conflict value chain, and also those most vulnerable to disruption. Direct perpetrators of mass atrocities may be relatively insulated from international pressure, but their facilitators are certainly not.”
Omer Ismail, Sentry Analyst, said: “Without countering systematic looting by governments and rebel groups, peace and protection efforts stand little chance of success. The good news story that Africa has become, and which in the next days the President will appropriately highlight, in many parts of the continent will continue to be undermined by these hijacked states and their long-running, predatory civil wars. A new framework must be developed to adapt, implement, and enforce the tools of financial crimes enforcement to give these countries back to the people.”
Sentry Co-Founder John Prendergast elaborated: “The Sentry’s ultimate objective is to alter the incentives for funding […]

Beverly Hills Hotel’s Sultan of Brunei Imposing Drastic Rules

The Feminist Majority Foundation (FMF) announced it is pulling its annual Global Women’s Rights Awards, co-chaired by Jay and Mavis Leno, from the Beverly Hills Hotel because the hotel’s owner, the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, is imposing a Taliban-like Brunei penal code, set to go into effect in three stages beginning on May 1, that includes the stoning to death of gay men and lesbians and the public flogging of women who have abortions.
Instead of holding its annual event at the hotel on May 5, FMF has joined with gay and lesbian groups in protesting this gross violation of human rights and will hold a rally at noon on May 5 across from the hotel, in the park on Sunset Boulevard, urging the Sultan to rescind the new penal code which has been condemned by human rights groups and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. FMF will hold the Global Awards event on the evening of May 5 at the Hammer Museum in Westwood, Los Angeles.
“We cannot hold a human rights and women’s rights event at a hotel whose owner would institute a penal code that fundamentally violates women’s rights and human rights,” said Feminist Majority Foundation President Eleanor Smeal.
“‘Kill-a-gay’ laws, or laws that allow the flogging of women for abortion, violate international law and have no place in civilized society,” said Feminist Majority Foundation Board Member Mavis Leno. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed deep concern about the new penal code and stated that such draconian punishments would contravene international law and international human rights.
FMF today launched a massive petition drive and social media campaign calling on the government of Brunei to immediately rescind the new code and asking the United Nations to take action if these laws go into effect as planned.
“The United Nations must condemn the government of Brunei’s plans and explore additional options, including sanctions, if Brunei fails to rescind this decree,” added Kathy Spillar, executive Vice President of the FMF and the event director.
The new penal code is set to be implemented in three phases over three years. The first phase, beginning tomorrow, will include fines and prison sentences. The second phase includes corporal punishment such as amputations and flogging women who have abortions. The stoning to death of gay men and lesbians is slated for the third phase.

Ben Affleck to be honored with the Cinema for Peace Humanitarian Award

The Cinema for Peace Foundation announced today that Academy Award-winning actor, filmmaker and founder of the Eastern Congo Initiative, Ben Affleck, will be honored with the Cinema for Peace Humanitarian Award at the 2013 Gala for Humanity on January 11 at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, Calif.
Each year since 2002, Cinema for Peace gives the Humanitarian Award to an individual and his or her organization who has demonstrated the foresight, courage and leadership required to take a stand against extreme injustice, intolerance and inequalities.
At the gala in January, Cinema for Peace will recognize 25 individuals and initiatives from the world of film in six categories: charitable giving, advocacy, protecting the environment and its people, Hurricane Sandy relief, as well as founders and partners of the organization. The Eastern Congo Initiative will be the beneficiary of Cinema for Peace’s highest honor, the Cinema for Peace Humanitarian Award.
More than 5 million people have been killed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 1996, making it the worst modern humanitarian crisis area in the world. Recently, the violence has escalated tenfold due to the rebel militia taking control of Goma, the economic center and capital. As a result, more than 230,000 families have been displaced in North and South Kivu – equivalent to the population of Hollywood and Santa Monica combined. The need for aid is at an all-time high.
“The Eastern Congo Initiative is the first U.S.-based advocacy and grant-making initiative wholly focused on working with and for the people of Eastern Congo,” said Jaka Bizilj, Founder of Cinema for Peace. “The Cinema for Peace Foundation is pleased to honor Ben Affleck for his courageous efforts to raise awareness about this terrible catastrophe and his brave stand against the injustices experienced by the Congolese. We are proud to support their work by providing desperately needed financial resources.”

Hollywood Foreign Press Association President, Dr. Aida Takla-O’Reilly, will open the 2013 Gala for Humanity with a special introduction on how film can be a powerful tool for messages of humanity. The HFPA is officially supporting the Cinema for Peace 2013 Gala for Humanity and its members are also attending.
Chairs of the 2013 Gala for Humanity include Claire and John Cauldwell, Roland Emmerich, Veronica Ferres, Cindy Hensley McCain, Jeff Robinov, Cathy Schulman, Bryan Singer and Jeff Skoll. Co-Chairs include Christian Angermayer, Elmar Biebl, Jaka Bizilj, Ted Braun, Rosilyn Heller, Philip […]

Kristen Stewart described as an “outsider” by director

HollywoodNews.com: Kristen Stewart seems to march to the beat of her own drum and her director for the cast’s boot camp for ‘On the Road’ seems to agree.
Gerald Nicosia seems to think that Stewart and her castmates in the film are somewhat like outsiders, states The New York Times. “They’re all very unconventional in their own lives,” Nicosia said about Stewart, Garrett Hedlund and others after he worked to prepare them for the film.
“If you’re an outsider, you understand what counterculture is about,” Nicosia said about the actors being able to connect to their characters in the way he was hoping.
