Elton John Does a Lot of Good – Donated $8.3 million last year

HollywoodNews.com: The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) today announced over $3.2 million in new grants that will further its mission to assist the most marginalized populations vulnerable to HIV infection. These new awards brought EJAF’s final total grant-making commitments for calendar 2011 to a record $8,316,871, with disbursements totaling $7,006,871 last year.
These grants represent EJAF’s continuing commitment to fund demographics and geographic regions that are seriously impacted by HIV/AIDS and under-served by traditional funders. Grant expenditures totaling $3,221,622 were awarded for 19 new and 29 renewal grants, including:
* health services for Black women, one of the highest HIV-impacted populations in this country;
* innovative programs focused on the health and rights of gay and bisexual men throughout the U.S.;
* programs designed to help people with HIV who are leaving prison to access and stay on treatment and maintain their health as they reintegrate into society;
* small community grants supporting services for gay men throughout Latin America;
* clinical and mental health services for vulnerable populations in the Caribbean; and
* additional funding totaling $1.6 million over two years to support over 50 community organizations providing needle exchange and harm reduction services for injection drug users.
“Through the efforts of hundreds of privately-funded syringe access programs, HIV incidence due to injection drug use in the U.S. has declined from 25% of all infections in 2000 to 9% today,” said Executive Director Scott Campbell. “Scaled-up syringe access programming could bring injection-related HIV infections down to zero. Given Congress’ unfortunate reinstatement of the ban on the use of federal funding for syringe exchange programs, EJAF’s increased investments as one of the top three funders in this field are particularly crucial.”
“For twenty years, EJAF has remained consistent in our mission, even as we’ve increased the scope and reach of our grant-making,” added Chairman David Furnish. “Our most recent grants continue this historic focus, dedicating critical funding to the most urgent and under-resourced aspects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.”
About EJAF
The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) was established as a nonprofit organization in the United States in 1992 and as a registered charity in the United Kingdom in 1993 by Sir Elton John. Together, both entities have raised more than $225 million for worthy programs in 55 countries around the globe since inception. Today, the Foundation is [...]

Penn’s humanitarian work has found him in New Orleans in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and more recently in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. Carrie Fisher Opens Up About Drugs, Sobriety, Insanity And Death

By Fred Topel
HollywoodNews.com: Carrie Fisher put all the drama of her drug addiction, her parents’ love triangles and the Star Wars phenomenon in a one woman show based on her book Wishful Drinking. Now HBO is filming it and Fisher entertained the Television Critics Association with more tales of debauchery and tragedy. With all the scandal behind her, she can finally laugh about it.
“Maybe some of it was with 12 step,” Fisher said. “Gradually what I realized was when I got sober, overdosed, went to a mental hospital, all these things, it went in the paper. ‘Guy dead in my bed.’ My thing was wait a second, if it’s going to be out there, please let my version be in it. So it was sort of a bit like that. Also there’s the saying, ‘You’re only as sick as your secrets.’ I’m sure most of you have that T-shirt. If you can claim it, it has very little power over you.”
When Eddie Fisher left Carrie’s mom Debbie Reynolds for Elizabeth Taylor, it was that day’s Brangelina. Although, it ultimately ruined Fisher’s career and Brad Pitt still seems to get work.
“He didn’t have as big a career as Brad’s to destroy, though it was considerable,” Fisher said. “No, it is very similar and I did point that out to Brad once at a party. He pretended at least to know what I was talking about. Yes, it destroyed my father. It wasn’t simply divorce that destroyed him. It was kind of every choice after that. It was drugs, it was Connie Stevens, it was the Playmate of the Year, it was marrying Ms. Louisiana. My dad is not the bastion of good judgment but he’s really fun.”
Elizabeth Taylor has crossed paths with the Fisher daughter since, and she’s even signed off on mentions of her in Carrie’s show. “I actually gave her an award and thanked her for getting Eddie Fisher out of our house,” Fisher joked. “I mean she’s fine with it. Her grandchildren are friends of mine and my daughter’s. I like Elizabeth. I’ve spent a lot of time with her. She did ‘These Old Broads’ for me and we have an interesting history.”
Fisher consulted all of the celebrities she would mention in her act and respected any sensitivity they had on the subjects. “It wasn’t that they didn’t want to be mentioned. It would be, ‘Don’t say this [...]

HollywoodNews.com: The Harry Potter Alliance, a volunteer fan charity organization dedicated to “using the examples of Harry Potter and Albus Dumbledore to spread the love and fight the Dark Arts in the real world”, partnered with The Leaky Cauldron, MuggleNet, HPANA, and Fiction Alley to found Helping Haiti Heal in order to assist with relief and help the Haitian people recover from January’s earthquake disaster.
Since its creation, Helping Haiti Heal has raised over $123,000 and sent 80,000 pounds of critical medical supplies to Haiti on five different planes; named, appropriately, “Harry”, “Hermione”, “Ron,” “DFTBA” (Don’t Forget to Be Awesome), and “Dumbledore”. Dumbledore, the fifth and final plane, successfully landed in Haiti on Tuesday, and to celebrate, the HP Alliance will present a livestream event featuring Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood in the films), contests, giveaways, discussions, and several other special guests tomorrow, Sunday June 27 from 2 to 6pm.
HP Alliance co-founder Andrew Slack writes, “Like the spirit of the Phoenix, from the ashes of rubble in Port-au-Prince and throughout much of the island, from the tears may there emerge new life. The people of Haiti will rise again!” Here’s to the real-life members of Dumbledore’s Army.
To find out how to vote for the HP Alliance in the Chase Community Giving contest and watch a video clarifying the group’s mission, click here or visit the official Facebook page. To find out how you can get involved in a troupe near you, check out the official site.
UPDATE: J.K. Rowling herself has responded to this incredible movement with a handwritten letter to the HP Alliance, saying,
Dear Andrew,
Dumbledore–UNBELIEVABLE!!! Every time I try and think of words for what you and the HP Alliance have done for Haiti, my mind goes blank (and my eyes fill with tears).
You all have done the most magnificent, overwhelming, inspirational, and awesome thing! (And I mean ‘awesome’ in the true meaning of the word, not as applied to lip gloss or pizza).
With love and admiration always,
Jo

Sean Penn talks about his son’s life-threatening accident

HollywoodNews.com: “She is a ghost to me now,” Sean Penn tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Douglas Brinkley of actress Robin Wright Penn. “We spent all those years together…. Now she’s just gone.”
Brinkley travels to Haiti, where Penn talks about Robin, their son Hopper’s life-threatening skateboarding accident, and what he’s doing to help rebuild the nation post-earthquake. When Penn was presented with a military coin and several honorary certificates of commendation for his service in the Haitian crisis, Lieutenant General P. K. Keen “gave me this look in the eye—a look of pride,” Penn tells Brinkley. “It meant more to me than any movie award.”
When Hopper sustained a head injury in a skateboarding accident, Penn and Robin pulled together at the hospital, praying for their son, Brinkley reports. “He underwent risky surgery due to intense bleeding of the brain,” Penn says, “and he pulled through.” Brinkley reports that Hopper’s brush with disaster was life-changing for his father. Feeling a karmic debt had to be repaid, Penn started the painful process of re-assessing his life’s priorities. He drove out to Palm Springs to spend time with T Bone Burnett, the composer-producer who helped Bob Dyl an find Jesus in the 1970s.
Since January, Penn has lived full-time, with the exception of a couple of brief trips—one to Washington, D.C., to testify on the Hill for more Haitian relief—in a tent not much bigger than an army surplus locker. Penn—along with the organization he started with Sarajevo-born philanthropist Diana Jenkins—was recently made official “camp manager” of Port-au-Prince displaced persons facility that has housed some 50,000 earthquake survivors. “I wanted to give back something more to help struggling people, but I didn’t know how to best do it,” Penn tells Brinkley. “I was for 20 years in a relationship with Robin and 18 years with children. I didn’t have time to commit to anything—for real—in places like Iraq, except to denounce the war. But now I’m single. I can lend a hand.”
Penn had been Hopper’s guardian, he tells Brinkley, and “he had just gone back to being with his mother on an experimental basis. I was putzing around at home, missing Hopper….I had never been to Haiti before. I couldn’t fathom the high death toll. So, like everybody else, I started tracking the news. I saw all those traumatized people getting Civil War medicine on TV. People were being given ibuprofen or alcohol [...]

Hollywoodnews: Jimmy Jean-Louis, star of NBC’s action-drama “Heroes” and founder of Hollywood Unites for Haiti, will receive the Humanitarian Award from Academy Award winning actor Sean Penn during International Luxury Media’s 3rd Annual Better World Awards (BWA) Glitter and Glam Ball. The invitation-only black-tie gala, cocktail reception and dinner will take place at The Lotus VIP Club On Le Goeland Beach during the Cannes Film Festival on May 19.
Supermodel Naomi Campbell, who will receive the BWA Fashion Philanthropy Award, will be among the special guests that include Boris Becker, Prince Filliberto de Savoie, Princess Clotilde Courau, Elie Saab, Denise Rich, Hofit Golan, the Al-Rashid family, Troy Bayliss, Baden Cooke, and Ana Cunya.
The exclusive evening includes musical performances by Bryan Ferry and Ky-Mani Marley, a celebrity poker tournament, fashion show by StyleShopUSA, and a live luxury charity auction benefiting Hollywood Unites for Haiti and Fashion Relief for Haiti.
Jimmy was born in Petionville, near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. After the powerful 2010 earthquake, Jean-Louis went back to Haiti to search for his elderly parents. Sadly, he learned that a house he had grown up in collapsed, killing several of his relatives.

“Haiti has suffered many set backs in its rich history and yet the Haitian people have never lost the character to face adversity with creativity, resilience, and community,” said Jean-Louis. “I want to do everything in my power to comfort those who desperately need help and rebuild the country that I love.”
The tragic events inspired Jean-Louis to change the focus of his charity Hollywood Unites for Haiti, whose original mission was to provide sports and cultural education to underprivileged youth on the island. The group mobilized for disaster relief after the magnitude-7 earthquake struck.
The organization allocates 100% of its donations for helping Haitian citizens and raising global awareness of ways in which people can help. Donations are used to buy:
- Shelter kits with tents, tarps, water purification tables, and other basic necessities
- Emergency relief supplies
- Food
- Medical supplies
- Family tool kits, including shovels
- Telecommunications equipment
Recently, Jean-Louis took part in a series of campaigns for Haitian aid, such as singing in the “We Are The World” remake for Haiti in February 2010 that aired during the start of the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada.
In 2008 and 2009, H.S.H. Prince Albert II de Monaco presented Julian Lennon with the BWA Environmental Preservation Award. Past Humanitarian Awards have gone [...]
