21st annual Hollywood Vanity Fair cover by Annie Leibovitz

For the 21st annual Hollywood cover, Annie Leibovitz captured an intimate portrait of the year’s most celebrated actors. The iconic three-panel foldout features 10 actors who had noteworthy performances over the past year: Amy Adams (Big Eyes), Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher), Reese Witherspoon (Wild), Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything), Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), David Oyelowo (Selma), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game), Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year), and Miles Teller (Whiplash).
The men wear bespoke white-tie, while the women channel Old Hollywood glamour in slinky gold and red. Taking advantage of Amy Adams’s years of dance training for the panel’s front panel, Leibovitz had Channing Tatum lift her up on his shoulder, which prompted Tatum to joke, “I’m wearing Amy Adams.”
“We made the picture in the same studio where we did the first Hollywood cover,” Leibovitz, who shot the first Hollywood Issue cover in 1995 and all but three times since, tells West Coast editor Krista Smith. “It looks fairly simple, but in fact it was difficult to shoot. We choreographed it over two days. Usually you shoot from fairly far away, but we wanted to get really close to the actors. We made an effort to create a feeling of intimacy. I pushed into them, shooting to the left and then the right, coming in as tight as I could. It was hair-raising, at least for me.”
Amy Adams recently earned her second Golden Globe for her performance as painter Margaret Keane in Tim Burton’s Big Eyes.
Channing Tatum revealed his dramatic chops as Olympic wrestler Mark Schultz in Foxcatcher.
Reese Witherspoon received her second best-actress Oscar nomination for her spectacular performance in Wild. She served as a producer on that film, as well as on the Oscar-nominated Gone Girl.
Eddie Redmayne’s stunning portrayal of Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything recently won him an Oscar nomination.
Benedict Cumberbatch cracks the enigma code—and earns an Oscar nomination doing it—as computer scientist Alan Turing in The Imitation Game.
Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo perfectly conjured Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma.
Sienna Miller marks a grand return to American cinema with her heartbreaking performance as Bradley Cooper’s wife in American Sniper.
Oscar Isaac gives a tour de force performance in A Most Violent Year.
Miles Teller stars in Whiplash, which won the Audience and Grand Jury Prizes at last year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The March issue of Vanity Fair will be available in New […]

Hollywood Film Awards: “Why It Mattered”

“This was a great opportunity for a studio and its talent, especially now that the show is on CBS (regardless of the ratings – 4.1 million) – essentially, a free ad for a movie that is about to be released. (The telecast itself told viewers right at the beginning that they would be getting a look at “the highly anticipated movies you are going to want to see” and that it would serve as “a guide to films that are going to be coming to theaters”)” according to the Hollywood Reporter.THR.COM

“For movies that have not yet been seen by the vast majority of moviegoers – i.e. Unbroken,Still Alice, Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game, etc. – the motivations and benefits of a HFA appearance are even clearer.” THR.COM

Winners: Hollywood Film Awards 2014
“I think that the holier-than-thou crowd could use a reality check: Even the Oscars, that oldest and most revered of awards season institutions, was created as a promotional vehicle for the movies made by the studios whose leaders founded the Academy. (Moreover, over its first few years, the winners of the Oscars were determined by a Central Board of Judges of five people, overseen by Louis B. Mayer.) In short, it’s a tale as old as time. This is show business,” from

Dustin Hoffman Dishes on His Directorial Debut Quartet

Dustin Hoffman, one of the most celebrated actors of our time, opens up in the February/March issue of AARP The Magazine about stepping out of his comfort zone for his directorial debut Quartet, redefining retirement in Hollywood and how his latest film drove him to ponder how far he’s come and how little he’s changed.
The Academy Award® winner is also being recognized for his Breakthrough Achievement in directing by AARP The Magazine with a 2012 Movies for Grownups® award.

The following are excerpts from the February/March issue of AARP The Magazine cover story, available in homes today and online NOW at www.aarp.org/magazine.
On his directorial film debut, Quartet:
“An honest answer: I directed a play on Broadway. I blamed my own demons for waiting 35 years to do it again. Why did I fight it? Because it’s a thrilling opportunity to be the one who holds the paintbrush.”
“As we were working on the film, I asked Billy Connolly [one of its stars], ‘What’s the movie about?’ And he said, ‘Don’t die until you’re dead.’ I thought that nailed it.”
On what drew him to Quartet:
“It’s an affirmative movie but still reality. There’s this cloud of mortality hovering over the characters and blinding them.”
On using real musicians ages 70-plus in Quartet:
“Brilliant artists—and no one had rung their phone for 30 or more years. They showed up at 6 every morning and worked sometimes 14 hours a day without a whimper, with such dedication and joy. It infected all of us.”
On retiring:
“I think ‘retirement’ goes hand in hand with people who make a living by having a ‘job.’ I don’t think we—the .00001 percent of the population who are so fortunate to love passionately what we do—consider it a ‘job.’”
On his ideal age and growing older:
“I wouldn’t trade now for anything.”
“What we all want is to continually grow and expand. I’ve discovered that as the body becomes more limited, the soul expands.”
On the differences between men and women:
“I think men are the weaker of the genders and live a more limited life than women. For whatever reasons, men run from intimacy. If you run from intimacy, you’re running from what life can give you.”
On mortality:
“My wife says I’ve been worrying about it since we started going out. But at a certain point your icons change. There’s Manoel de Oliveira, who’s still directing at 104. And I recently read about a 94-year-old guy who had just […]
