Madonna Throws $1.5 million into Coconut Water Craze. Is It Really That Healthy?

By Dr. Bradley Frederick Is coconut water really that good for you, or is it just another celebrity-fueled fad? Madonna recently invested $1.5 million in Vita Coco, a coconut water brand that is popping up on grocery and convenience store shelves all over the country. Demi Moore, Matthew McConaughey, and Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers have also recently been seen consuming coconut water. The packaging claims that coconut water is healthy, will help you hydrate naturally, and “will change your life.” But are these claims true?
The list of celebrities regularly drinking coconut water is growing. Chris Pine, Anna Paquin, Vampire Bill and Kara DioGuardi have been spotted drinking the stuff.
During an Oscars after party this year, hosted at the home of Madonna’s manager, the music mogul served a coconut water cocktail called the Vita Coco Caipirinha to guests. Buzz ensued.
Years ago when researching coconut water, I found that it is a naturally isotonic beverage, meaning it has the same electrolyte balance as our bodies. Electrolytes are essential minerals that are found in our bodies, such as potassium, sodium, chloride and bicarbonate. Essential minerals become ions in solution and acquire the capacity to conduct electricity. In fact, the ion concentrations in coconuts are exactly the same as our blood plasma. In the Pacific War of 1941-1945, both sides in the conflict used coconut water siphoned directly from coconuts to give emergency transfusions to wounded soldiers.
In some parts of India, the coconut palm is also known as “kalpavriksha,” a Sanskrit term that roughly translates to “tree which gives all that is necessary for living.” Some believe that the coconut palm tree and the coconut can be used to support everything needed for life.
Coconut water is more nutritious than whole milk, as it contains less fat and no cholesterol. It is lower in calories and more nutritious than orange juice, it is naturally sterile or “pure,” and in addition to helping remove toxins and aiding in digestion, it is anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-microbial. Coconut water is also the universal blood donor, since it is identical to human blood plasma. That is precisely why in my all-natural line of vitamins, Dr. Satori Rx, our Mega Multi-Vitamin packets contain these same electrolytes and nutrients found in coconut water.
Coconut water is naturally biologically pure and full of electrolytes. It is the perfect natural sports drink. It contains more potassium (about […]
