TLC and Roma Downey team up on “ANSWERED PRAYERS”

TLC explores modern-day miracles with ANSWERED PRAYERS, an all-new series hosted by celebrated actress and producer Roma Downey (‘The Bible Series,’ ‘Son of God,’ ‘AD,’ ‘Touched by an Angel’). Premiering Sunday, July 26 at 10/9c, this six-part series follows the remarkable stories of people in life-threatening situations who have experienced moments so inexplicable, so incredible that they can only be described as divine intervention.
Using a blend of heart-wrenching interviews, thrilling recreations and dramatic real footage, each hour-long episode paints a vivid portrait of ordinary people who have faced extraordinary circumstances?and miraculously lived to tell the tale. Each individual?s unwavering faith and trust in the power of prayer has transformed potentially heartbreaking situations into stories of true inspiration?from a young boy buried for hours under eleven feet of sand, to the horror of a pastor stabbed 37 times, to a family that survives their car plunging upside down into an icy river bank.
The premiere episode introduces viewers to two amazing families. An Indiana mother hears the voice of God telling her to prepare for a possibly devastating storm and protect her three children. She acts on her instinct and huddles in a closet with her husband and kids?mere moments before a tornado rips through their home, hurling it hundreds of feet through the air. Though she loses hold of her family, she never gives up faith that God will keep them safe, even if she can?t. Next, in Florida a young boy suffers a horrific lawnmower accident. Distraught, his parents make the agonizing decision to have his leg amputated, but pray for a sign they are doing the right thing. On the day of the operation, what their son sees on the ride to the hospital could be the answer to their prayers and may change his life for good.
With authenticity, insight, compassion and heart, the astounding stories featured on ANSWERED PRAYERS will leave even the most skeptical viewer considering if a divine force was at work.

Prayer Partners: Christians in Hollywood–Part 3

By ROBERT W. WELKOS
Over the years, Doug Millham of Pasadena has often hung around movie and TV sets, where he has met all sorts of people working in the entertainment industry. He said he has come to view them as “gypsies.”
“I call them gypsies because they’re always going from job to job, whether it dancing or performing. It’s very difficult,” the retired Presbyterian minister told HollywoodNews. “Those who choose it need a lot of support. You know, it’s glamorous, but for ninety-nine percent, the industry uses you and discards you when the next younger, prettier person comes along….I can see why drug abuse, marital problems and family issues bubble up all the time.”
For more than two decades, Millham has asked numerous people working in entertainment if he could say a private prayer with them.
“I’ve prayed with Muslims, I’ve prayed with Jewish people and I’ve asked nonbelievers if I can pray with them…,” he recalled. “And I’ve never been rejected.”
Millham, 67, is a volunteer “prayer partner” who regularly keeps in touch with a network of actors, directors, producers, writers and others who ask him to pray for them. They may be facing a crisis in their personal life, be an actor gearing up for an important casting call, or a producer or screenwriter seeking God’s guidance in their next creative pursuits.
“The industry is incredibly competitive and it can be very demoralizing to people whether you are a person or faith or not,” Millham said. “You’re going to be in competition with enormously talented people most of the time and you’ll get an awful lot of rejection and criticism. I think the attraction (of prayer) to people of faith, whether they’re Jewish, Muslim or Christian, is that we believe there is a higher power, an eternal source of comfort and calm (that provides) direction in our lives. And I think prayer is a calming factor for people who work in a profession with constant anxiety.”
Married and the father of two grown sons, Millham is a former pastor at Hollywood Presbyterian Church. He is now semi-retired, spending much of his time running a Pasadena-based nonprofit called Discover the World, which raises money for orphans in Africa—specifically providing care for children who have been orphaned as a result of losing parents to AIDS.
“We have about 600 orphans we’ve placed in school,” he said. “I travel back and forth to Africa on a […]

The Talent Search: Christians in Hollywood Part 2

By ROBERT W. WELKOS
Seventeen-year-old Nicole Smolen is an actress and Christian who works in Hollywood.
Smolen has appeared on such network TV shows as “Criminal Minds” and “Brothers & Sisters” and has been cast in feature films and a national TV commercial. But it’s her role in a new small-budget indie film called “8 Days” that makes her particularly proud.
In the yet-to-be released film, Smolen plays Amber Stevens, a 16-year-old from a well-off home who sneaks away to a high school party with friends and winds up drugged, kidnapped, raped and forced by pimps into the netherworld of sex trafficking.
But because those gritty elements contained in the plot are only the beginning of the storyline, Smolen believes she is not compromising her Christian faith.
“It’s a very inspirational story and I believe it will touch a lot of lives” Smolen told HollywoodNews. “All the profits go to safe houses (for victims of human trafficking) and people in need. It’s not like we’re profiting off of this.”
The role appealed to her, she noted, because “it’s a film that will benefit people and inform (moviegoers) about human trafficking….I don’t want to just be a typical teenaged girl (in films) who’s crazy about boys. I want films that cause change in people’s lives.”
Smolen credits Actors, Models & Talent for Christ, a faith-based nonprofit based in Tyrone, Ga., with helping hone her talents to the point where she and her parents decided to sell their home in Lawrenceville, Ga., and move to L.A. so that she could pursue an acting career. She said she still remains friends with people she met through AMTC and the network helps keep her grounded in an industry where success is often accompanied by rejection and periods of unemployment.
Never heard of Actors, Models & Talent for Christ? Since 2012 alone, the organization says it has trained between 2,000 and 3,000 people in the in’s and out’s of the entertainment and modeling industries.
The training isn’t cheap. This summer’s intensive six-day International Shine Conference scheduled July 1-6 in Orlando, Fla., costs $3,895 to $4,995 per person (a $300 discount applies if paid in full).
To attend the Shine conference, performers must first audition and be accepted. These auditions are held in cities throughout the United States. The next L.A.-area auditions are scheduled for June 21 in Pasadena and July 19 in Anaheim.
AMTC has its roots in a modeling convention that began […]

Michelle Obama: Bring Back Our Girls – No More Abuse of Women

“What happened in Nigeria was not an isolated incident. It’s a story we see every day as girls around the world risk their lives to pursue their ambitions… I want you to know that Barack has directed our government to do everything possible to support the Nigerian government’s efforts to find these girls and bring them home. In these girls, Barack and I see our own daughters. We see their hopes, their dreams, and we can only imagine the anguish their parents are feeling right now,” said Michelle Obama.
It looks like the world is waking up to the brutal abuse of women worldwide. We must unite to make sure that men stop using, abusing and killing them.
Make no mistake, this is a violent struggle that will last for decades, if not centuries. Many people around the world, due to their beliefs, accept women has being property of men.
Words and temporary PR campaigns won’t do it. A full commitment by people, organizations and governments together with active implementation of police and military law and order must be deployed to stop these horrific acts against women.
Below Michelle Obama speech.

No more violence against women. This is 2014 NOT the 1500s.

The Burnetts and the History Channel are putting their all into pulling viewers into “The Bible”

Roma Downey and Mark Burnett are bracing themselves for reaction to their ambitious, 10- hour History Channel adaptation of the Bible that launches this Sunday night (3/3) and runs through Easter. “I’m sure people will hurl what they want to hurl,” the “Touched by an Angel” actress told us. But, she added, the miniseries was made “with full hearts.”
Certainly the Burnetts and the History Channel are putting their all into pulling viewers into “The Bible,” with a full court press of promotion including: advance screenings in theaters and sports arenas; plugs from faith leaders including Joel Osteen, Rick Warren, T.D. Jakes and Maya Angelou; a huge array of support materials available to churches and individuals; a webinar; a You Tube video in which Roma asks believers to pray for the miniseries; even a kit for hosing Bible viewing parties (http://www.outreach.com/campaigns/the-bible-resources).
“We’ve had scholars and theologians help. We’re not pretending to be biblical experts,” she stressed. “We brought experts in once the scripts were created to take a look at the scripts to make sure we were accurate and true to the Bible, but obviously we’re making a movie, and so we breathed creative expansion into that.”
Roma is hoping the TV event will attract the faithful and those unfamiliar with the Bible alike. “Yes, it’s going to be a faith journey, but it’s also going to be really exciting and dynamic television,” as she put it. The filmmakers were able to bring up-to-the-minute CGI special effects artistry to familiar stories from Noah’s ark and Moses’ parting of the Red Sea to Jesus walking on water — “Genesis to Revelation.”
The intensity of their belief in this project is such that Burnett told Variety, “I am certain that if you took ‘Survivor,’ ‘The Voice,’ ‘Shark Tank,’ ‘The Apprentice’ and all the other shows I’ve done, over the next 25 years more people will see ‘The Bible’ miniseries than all those other projects combined.”
Roma is seen in the miniseries as well as serving as an executive producer along with her husband. She plays Mary, mother of Jesus, in scenes depicting the final chapters of his life story.
“We have a young actress of course playing Mary during the nativity and the early years of Jesus’ life, and 30 years go by. An early version of the script referred to that as Young Mary and Old Mary and when I stepped into […]

Tom Cruise’s rep shoots down Scientology marriage story

HollywoodNews.com: ‘Vanity Fair’ has released an article that goes after Tom Cruise and his religion, Scientology, as it claims that the religion was used to recruit girlfriends and his former wife, Katie Holmes.
Now, Cruise’s rep is striking back against the article that says that Nazanin Boniadi was first selected to be his girlfriend in 2004 when she was shipped off to a Scientology center in Florida, states RadarOnline. “Lies in a different font are still lies — designed to sell magazines,” Cruise’s rep commented.
The search reportedly led to Holmes being chosen as his girlfriend and future wife. However, the two ended up finalizing their divorce last month.

HollywoodNews.com: Since Ang Lee’s involvement was first announced, Life of Pi had been near – if not at – the top of nearly every Oscar prediction on the web (including from yours truly). With the first trailer hitting the web this morning, buzz no doubt will only intensify from here.
In case you’ve been out of the loop for the past several months, Lee’s latest is an adaptation of the 2001 bestseller about a young man stranded on a lifeboat with a tiger that ends up being about God and the meaning of life as seen through the myriad viewpoints of Christianity, Islam and Hinduism.
