Studio 54 returns for one night, last night

HollywoodNews.com: This morning, Studio 54 will wake up with a hangover, look around the floor for its clothes, and try to remember what happened last night. Now a dowager theatre home to the Roundabout, Studio will recall celebrating like it was 1977 last night, and was younger than springtime.
Oh yes, Studio 54. Liza, Calvin, Andy, Halston, Truman Capote. Bianca Jagger on the white horse. The doormen, the barricades, the coke, and the quaaludes. In 1977, New York City was pretty much on the skids. Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager threw the most decadent party in the history of the world. It would have gone forever except for tax evasion and jail for the owners. When it came back, under Mark Fleishmann, it was cool but not the same. Nothing ever is.
So last night, Sirius XM recreated Studio for just one night in its original home, now the Roundabout Theater’s place of business. Sirius XM has a Studio 54 channel that plays disco music from the era, so they commemorated it by reviving the club–down to the big silvery moon with the coke spoon hovering over the stage. And if you build it, they will come–from former doormen Richie Notar and Marc Benecke, to pr lady Myra Scheer to Schrager (now a wildly successful hotelier) to Carmen D’Alessio, who did all the legendary events. Liza and Calvin did not attend. But Keith Richards and Patti Hansen made the scene, along with Kevin Bacon, Naomi Campbell, Cameron Diaz, Clive Davis, Nikki Haskell, Denise Rich, Susan Lucci, Randy Jones from the Village People, Carol Alt, Donald and Melania Trump, Lance Bass and some reality TV people.

Howard Stern sues Sirius over stocks

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Is it possible to put a value on Howard Stern’s talent?
The radio personality is going to give it a try now that he has filed a lawsuit against his current employer, Sirius Satellite Radio. At issue is a number of performance-based stock options that were built into Stern’s contract. The shock jock’s attorney’s claim that the satellite radio provider “offered him a series of stock awards in 2004 if the company beat its subscriber estimates by 2 million or more,” Reuters reports. The lawsuit goes on to allege that Sirius XM beat that stated target every year from 2006 to 2010.
“Now that Sirius has conquered its chief competitor and acquired more than 20 million subscribers, it has reneged on its commitment to Stern, unilaterally deciding that it has paid him enough,” the complaint reads.
This reaction by Stern seems strange, since he just signed a new five-year contract with Sirius after months of on-air complaining and threatening to leave. You would think that unpaid stock options in the company would be a sticking point of any contract negotiation between Stern and his employers. Maybe there’s more to this lawsuit than meets the eye?

Bubba the Love Sponge lashes out at Hollywood as he exits Sirius XM

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Sirius XM Satellite Radio has had an interesting relationship with Hollywood as the media conglomerate has fought to expand, but if recent comments by a high-profile radio talent are any indication, that relationship might be more harmful than beneficial.
“They paid an exorbitant amount for Hollywood people like Jamie Foxx with no f—ing radio talent, so radio people like me have suffered,” said Bubba the Love Sponge, who was one of Sirius XM’s highest-rated talk show hosts until he walked away from his gig a few days ago.
In an interview with THR, Bubba says the radio company asked most of its radio talent to take pay cuts – up to 80% in some cases. For Bubba, who was making around $1 million annually, it would have reduced his salary to $200,000. He decided not to accept that offer, and so will no longer be heard on Howard Stern’s Sirius XM channel.
But Bubba’s upset because of the amount of money Sirius XM has laid out to Hollywood superstars like Foxx, Oprah Winfrey, Eminem, Bob Dylan, Martha Stewart and more, forcing hosts with years of radio experience to suffer.
“A lot of good radio people aren’t getting an opportunity because of these Hollywood people,” Bubba ranted.
”Eminem doesn’t even have to show up and they pay him zillions of dollars. Where does Bubba the Love Sponge sign up for that?
“I don’t have any business on a movie set, and actors don’t have any business behind a radio mike,” Bubba added. “You Hollywood f—s stay out of radio, and we’ll stay out of Hollywood.”
We knew negotiations would be fierce once Sirius XM buttoned up Howard Stern, who reportedly went from $100 million annually to $80 million. And it will be interesting to see which other channels at the radio company change in 2011.

Howard Stern staying with Sirius/XM, agrees to 5-year deal

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Apparently all of that public bitching and moaning over the airwaves of his XM/Sirius satellite radio program were part of the negotiations.
Howard Stern signed a five-year deal to remain on the satellite-radio provider. He announced the deal on his program this morning, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
“I have come to the conclusion that the real innovators, the real geniuses are the people here at Sirius,” he said. “I have signed a five-year contract to stay at Sirius.”
That’s not what he had been preaching in the days and weeks leading up to the previously final day of his current contract. Stern was complaining about the way his bosses had been treating him, and delivered a very public tongue-lashing to management – namely company CFO David Frear — about his refusal to take a pay cut from his $500 million salary. (!!)
Stern did not say how much his new deal would be worth, but said it was “very fair.”

Kim Kardashian may want John Mayer to keep up with her

HollywoodNews.com: John Mayer who has dated Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson is now eyeing another babe: Kim Kardashian.
New York Post caught the two out on the town the other night in Manhattan. Kardashian is shooting her E! reality series in Gotham currently.
A Post source exclaimed that their date was a litmus test: “They brought along other friends, but the idea was to see if they would hit it off.”
It’s no secret that Kardashian is hunting down a new guy.
The Post last December actually observed Kardashian and Mayer in the lobby of Sirius XM.
However, Mayer wasn’t happy with their write-up, responding on Twitter: “I see @kimkardashian at Sirius/XM and say hello like a gentleman and you want to spin a story at my expense? [Bleep] you!”

Howard Stern confirms leaving Sirius for “Idol” talks

MSNBC reports that Howard Stern has notified all his satellite radio listeners that in fact he is considering leaving Sirius radio to be the judge replacing Simon Cowell on “American Idol.” Stern said, “There’s not a better job on the planet than judging that f—ing karaoke contest. It might be possible, we’ll see. They’d have to pay me a ton of dough because I already make a ton of dough.”
Stern is currently ending a five-year $500 million contract with Sirius, but stated, “A $100 million to judge a karaoke contest? Yeah, I would do that show for $100 million.”
