“Ted” and “Magic Mike” big box office opening

HollywoodNews.com: This weekend represented a shining example of the two best trends in mainstream moviegoing this year. As I wrote (here and here), we’ve seen a real upswing in both mid-to-low-budget mainstream fare that aren’t especially ‘tentpole-ish’ as well as a huge upswing in the number of R-rated films being released by the major studios.
As such, two of the four wide releases this weekend were both R-rated and all four were relatively small-scale and in 2D. That they mostly debuted to blockbuster numbers is an encouraging sign that not every movie need be a $150 million fantasy genre franchise entry. The top film of the weekend is also the best mainstream picture of the summer, as Seth MacFarlane’s Ted (review) debuted to a massive $54 million.
That’s the third-best debut for an R-rated comedy behind the $57 million opening of Sex and the City and the $87 million Fri-Sun debut of The Hangover part II. Among non-sequel/spin-off R-rated comedies, it topped the $44 million record debut of The Hangover and is the is among the top-ten best R-rated debuts of all-time. This is a massive win for all involved, bringing Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane serious film-making clout, further confirming that Mark Wahlberg is an actual ‘put butts in the seats’ movie star and giving Universal something to laugh about.
Speaking of Wahlberg, this is his second biggest opening behind the $68 million debut of Planet of the Apes back in 2001, and it needs only cross $133 million to supplant The Departed as his third-highest grossing film (Planet of the Apes and The Perfect Storm earned $180 million and $182 million respectively)

Mario Cantone marries longtime partner in NY

HollywoodNews.com: This is incredibly cool news: Mario Cantone, best known for his role of Anthony on the Sex and the City television series and feature films, announced on The View Friday that he and partner Jerry Dixon have gotten married.
They have been together 20 years – far longer than any of Donald Trump’s three marriages, either marriage of Britney Spears, or Shannon Doherty’s three trips down the aisle.
“I got married for the same reasons you did,” Mario said to co-host Joy Behar. “We’re older now. We’ve been together 20 years. After 20 years you’re like, ‘Thanks for the anti-climactic honeymoon government!’ “
He added: “It was beautiful, just my family there. I love him. He’s a good man.”

Sarah Jessica Parker knows plot of third “Sex and the City” movie

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Get ready for more “Sex.”
As rumors swirl about a potential “Sex and the City” prequel (with younger actresses Selena Gomez and Blake Lively), Sarah Jessica Parker reportedly has told Parade magazine that she knows the plot of a third “Sex” movie, but didn’t go so far as to confirm it.
“I know what the story is. It’s a small story, but I think it should be told. The question is, what’s the right time to tell it?” Parker said.
THR weighed in on the story, quoting “Sex” veterans who downplayed the prequel idea.
“My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33, and I took her to 43,” said longtime showrunner Michael Patrick King, who directed the two feature films. “I didn’t even want to know who Carrie Bradshaw’s parents were because I thought she only existed in Manhattan. So for me, the idea of going backwards and making her less evolved … is something that I don’t imagine doing.”
Kristin Davis also shot down the idea of the prequel, saying, “We’re us and we’ve discussed our history in the show already so for all of our fervent fans who listen to what we say, why would we rewrite that? And then have like different people with our names? It’s kind of freaky.”
But for a third “Sex” movie, Davis adds, “I’m always hopeful and I always believe there’s another story to tell because these are these women’s lives so why wouldn’t there be another chapter. … [But] I don’t know if it will happen.”

The play will begin previews on January 5 at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre and which will officially open on January 26.
The play is about a brilliant and exacting poetry professor undergoing experimental treatment for cancer. A scholar who devoted her life to academia, she must now face the irony and injustice of becoming the subject of research.
Nixon has triumphed in Broadway before winning a Tony Award for her performance in Rabbit Hole. Her other Broadway credits are The Women, Indiscretions, The Heidi Chronicles, Hurlyburly, The Real Thing, and The Philadelphia Story.
An Emmy winner for Sex and the City and Law & Order: SVU, she currently appears on Showtime’s The Big C.

Sarah Jessica Parker opens up about normal family life

HollywoodNews.com: Although everyone identifies her as her glamorous ‘Sex and the City’ character Carrie Bradshaw, Sarah Jessica Parker is revealing that her life is fairly normal and not glamorous.
The star admitted to ‘Vogue’ that even though she has three children with husband Matthew Broderick, they don’t have anyone helping them out at home, states OMG!.
“We don’t have any live-in help. We’re pretty hands-on parents. That’s something that’s important to both of us, and we don’t shirk it, because what’s the point in having a family if you’re not going to really participate in it, you know?” Parker commented.
She also revealed that she is nowhere near the fashionista that her TV character was, but still has a love for that industry.
Do you think she seems like a good mom?

Sarah Jessica Parker in first “I Don’t Know” trailer

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Sarah Jessica Parker’s best known for her “Sex and the City” role, but she’s still attempting to branch away from the HBO franchise and find mainstream movie success in a different act. While she has had success in romantic comedies, it appears that her next comedy might be a shift in a new direction.
Douglas McGrath’s “I Don’t Know How She Does It,” due in theaters in September, stars Parker as a career woman juggling work and family. Greg Kinnear, Kelsey Grammer and Pierce Brosnan co-star alongside Ms. Parker, but they’ll only be as good as the screenplay. Good thing the studio grabbed Aline Brosh McKenna (“The Devil Wears Prada,” “Morning Glory”) for the gig.
Today, Yahoo Movies! has its first look at a teaser trailer for the comedy. We’ve posted it below. The movie will be out on Sept. 16. Let us know what you think!

Sarah Jessica Parker at Weinstein’s party in Cannes

HollywoodNews.com: Sarah Jessica Parker is not waiting around for another “Sex and the City” movie. No way. On Friday night in Cannes, SJP– wearing a white Dolce & Gabbana gown with strings of pearls–showed off a lot of clips from her fall film, “I Don’t Know How She Does It.”

The occasion was a Weinstein Company party at the H0tel Martinez where movie mogul Harvey Weinstein unveiled highlights from several new films and talked a little bit about some that are going to start production–including David O. Russell’s “Silver Linings Playbook,” which was announced in this column, and Quentin Tarantino‘s new one, “Django Unchained”–with rumored cast members Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Parker was a little nervous, but it turned out she needn’t have been. Her Doug McGrath directed comedy has an all star cast including Greg Kinnear, Pierce Brosnan, and Kelsey Grammer. Based on the best selling novel, “Don’t Know How” looks like the more grounded sequel to “Sex and the City”–the story of a mom who’s also a high powered professional but not quite getting everything right. The comedy could hit that sweet spot of “The Devil Wears Prada”– not bad.
The other Weinstein Company movie that generated a ton of buzz was “My Week with Marilyn,” starring Michelle Williams and Eddie Redmayne. Williams as Marilyn Monroe just jumps off the screen– she’s got “it.” The whole look of Simon Curtis’s film is sensational, with Redmayne in the “My Favorite Year” role of Colin Clark, Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier, and Judi Denchas Sybil Thorndike. “Marilyn” already looks like a winner, and an award getter–and a lot of fun.
Williams, of course, won’t be Weinstein Company’s only Best Actress candidate. The company just picked up –with Ron Burkle–Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in “Iron Lady.” The $7 million purchase has the Croisette buzzing–this was one of the few powerhouse films available so far. “Iron Lady” could be “The King’s Speech” of 2011.
