Websites Offer Exclusive Hollywood Access

By ROBERT W. WELKOS
“Don’t Miss this Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity to Meet Miley Cyrus.”
That’s just one of the “celebrities for hire” listed on a website called Millionaire’s Concierge out of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., that also dangles the opportunity for its presumably rich clientele exclusive entre to major movie premieres, awards shows, walk-on roles “in the Hottest TV Shows or Films,” and many other luxury experiences.
“The World’s Biggest Stars Come to You!” the website exults.
“Hiring a celebrity for your next party won’t just provide you with the opportunity to meet a beloved star—it produces enormous entertainment value for you and your guests. Whether you’re planning a sweet-sixteen birthday party, celebrating a recent accomplishment, or simply painting the town red for the sake of it, a celebrity performance will turn your special occasion into an unforgettable experience.” Celebrities can also help “get your message across” at corporate events, the website notes.
It then lists such “celebrities for hire” as the Beach Boys, Blink 182, Jethro Tull, Julio Iglesias, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sharon Stone, Jim Carrey, Sylvester Stalone (sic), Oscar De La Hoya, Jenny McCarthy, Donald Trump, Patrick Stewart “and many many more.”
It’s all about the public’s insatiable desire to be close to celebrities and big events, if you’ve got the money.
“It never goes out of style,” Doug Turner, owner of Millionaire’s Concierge, told HollywoodNews in a brief phone interview.
“I serve rich people all over the world,” he added, noting that he started his company 17 years ago.
The website includes a video segment that appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show which detailed how his company caters to its wealthy clients, like the time Turner said they dropped 50 dozen roses into a swimming pool from a helicopter for a client’s anniversary. The Oprah segment does not mention celebrities for hire.
A spokeswoman for Trump said that while the famed billionaire businessman may have met the owner of Millionaire’s Concierge years back in Florida, in any case, she has asked that Trump’s name be removed from the website.
“(Trump) has no affiliation with Millionaire’s Concierge and he does not do these kind of things,” she said. “He works with speaking engagement bureaus. Mr. Trump is one of the highest paid speakers in the world. These are legitimate organizations. He would never do this.”
HollywoodNews reached out to representatives of DiCaprio, Cyrus, Stone, Stallone and Carrey and have yet to hear back.

Sharon Stone Kisses Kathy Griffin at 2012 AARP Movies for Grownups Awards

By Beck/Smith
HollywoodNews.com: This week’s 2012 AARP Movies for Grownups Awards brought out many of Hollywood’s brightest luminaries — including Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Martin Scorsese, Kenneth Branagh, Janet McTeer, Alexander Payne and still hot Sharon Stone — adding to the elegant event’s distinction as an Awards Season Must. As the New York Times put it, it seems that “the Movies for Grownups had finally, well, grown up.”
We applaud AARP’s persistent efforts toward breaking through the wall of ageism. Making those efforts in the ageism capital of the world — Hollywood — is particularly noteworthy. Here, ageism is not only accepted, it’s not only embraced, it is clung to with a ferocity that speaks of barely-hidden terror. (Think Demi Moore.) However, with the graying of the Baby Boom generation and other factors making moviegoers of age 50 and up increasingly important to box office revenue, more filmmakers and stars will be reaching out to the mature crowd. Next, we’d like to see Movies for Grownups on television.
Speaking of the TV side, the standard ratings classifications are archaic statistically — like using a mortar and pestle when you have a Cuisinart, with today’s technology offering far more sophisticated and meaningful data crunching capabilities. (David Poltrack, Chief Research Officer of CBS Corp. has long been trying to educate people about this.) And yet, we continue to see the phrase “the coveted 18-49 demographic” over and over and over again. (Lazy TV writers really should come up with at least one or two different adjectives besides “coveted.”) Networks and media continue to quote only the ratings for viewers under age 50. Yet the 55-plus audience reportedly reached 33 per cent of the adult population last year. In 2015, it’s expected to reach 36 per cent. That’s a heck of a lot of ignoring.

Sean Penn in Cannes Raising Money for Haiti

HollywoodNews.com: Tonight’s the annual amFAR dinner. But with no Sharon Stone (she was ousted last year in a political squabble), the once mighty AIDS fundraiser has been eclipsed. In the last three days, Sean Penn, director Paul Haggis, and supermodel Naomi Campbell have tapped the wealthy mainstays of Cannes for their own important causes–Haiti, and Japan. Last night, Penn’s J/P Foundation raised between $500,000 and $700,000 at a swanky dinner at the Carlton Hotel.
Philanthropist Ella Krasner hosted Robert and Grace DeNiro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jane Fonda, Richard Perry, Uma Thurman, Naomi Campbell, Ryan Gosling, Rosario Dawson, Faye Dunaway, Roberta Armani (a sponsor), the people from Maybach autos, a Saudi prince, Harvey Weinstein and a roomful of 200 or so people who sported diamonds and more diamonds. Sean, who is so passionate about Haiti, spoke eloquently and persuasively before auctioning off rare items like walking the red carpet with him and Thurman on Friday for the premiere of his film, “This Must Be The Place.”
Uma, by the way, donated a huge but undisclosed amount to the cause. She told me: “Life has been good to me, I’m lucky. So I want to give back.” She’s a peach.
Then: everyone headed to the Martinez Hotel for Paul Haggis’s Artists for Peace and Justice. That’s where siblings Jane and Peter Fonda ran into each other, and Haggis entertained stars from all the movies here. Money from both events went to Haiit relief. Earlier in the week, Naomi Campbell raised around $1 million for Japan relief with her fashion show.
The only big party that raised no money this week: Microsoft co founder Paul Allen fielded about half a dozen stars and tons of extras to his behemoth Octopus yacht. Allen, recovering from lymphoma, played the guitar with his rock band while guests got to see his full sized yellow submarine. Allen donated around $14 million to various charities in 2009, but on Tuesday night the party “was just to show off how much money he has,” a celebrity guest told me.
Not at Allen’s shindig: DeNiro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, or even Harvey Weinstein. And of course, no press allowed.
Tonight: the AmFAR event, with no Sharon Stone, actress/model Milla Jovovich singing a song, a tribute to Elizabeth Taylor, and two songs from a surprise guest that’s supposed to be Janet Jackson but very likely is someone else. But in Cannes: the premiere of [...]

Kate Beckinsale offered “Total Recall” role?

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Could Kate Beckinsale be joining Colin Farrell in the planned remake of “Total Recall?”
It makes sense, as Beckinsale’s husband, Len Wiseman, is on tap to direct. And now the word this morning states that Beckinsale has been offered the role of Lori, a part played by Sharon Stone in the original Arnold Schwarzenegger version, Deadline reports.
The site goes on to report that Eva Mendes and Rosario Dawson “are the serious contenders” for the film’s other female role, Melina.
Beckinsale’s currently filming the latest “Underworld,” but she should be finished in time to jump into “Recall.” Sony Pictures is producing the releasing the remake, which would be in theaters in 2012.

Cyndi Lauper on her “love affair” with LGBT community

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: One of my favorite events of the year is the LA Gay & Lesbian Center’s Evening With Women which benefits its services for women which include legal assistance, domestic violence services, health and services and cultural arts programs.
I have some wonderful memories from past events including interviewing Sharon Stone one year and Ann and Nancy Wilson last year. Two years ago Christina Aguilera performed and she did not forget a single lyric!
This year’s event takes place on April 16 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and I’m especially excited because the great Cyndi Lauper, one of our most beloved straight allies, will be performing!
Cyndi did a wide-ranging interview in advance of the event with The Center. Here are a few highlights:
On being an LGBT ally: “I have had a very long and enduring love affair with the LGBT community. The community has been there for me throughout my career, and I hope that I have been there for the community whenever they have needed me. I am inspired by the community’s unwavering ability to never give up, especially in light of so much discrimination and hatred in the world.”
On True Colors Tour: “The True Colors Tour will be back, but in a new and exciting way. We are currently in the planning stages and hope you have something to announce soon. As for hints, think ‘one singular sensation’.”
On the ‘We Give a Damn’ Campaign: “We just celebrated our first anniversary on April 1 and were looking back on what was accomplished in that time. It is amazing to see so many people take part in the campaign and tell their stories to their family and friends about why they support equality. We have been very fortunate to have many celebrities take part and we are deeply grateful for their support. It has been wonderful to see so many of my peers in the entertainment industry step up and help spread the message of equality. I have not been surprised, but I have been very moved by their commitment to the cause.”

GLAAD honoring Ricky Martin and Kristin Chenoweth

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: If you forget about the year when Jennifer Aniston was inexplicably honored, the GLAAD Media Awards usually get it right when it comes time to celebrating the LGBT community and its allies.
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today announced it will honor Grammy Award-winning singer Ricky Martin and Emmy and Tony Award-winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth at the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
Martin will receive the Vito Russo Award at the New York award ceremony on Saturday, March, 19 at the Marriott Marquis Times Square. Chenoweth will receive the Vanguard Award at the Los Angeles event on Sunday, April 10, 2011 at the Westin Bonaventure.
GLAAD also announced that Andy Cohen, Bravo’s Executive Vice President of Original Programming and host of ‘Watch What Happens: Live’ will host the New York event. Additional honorees and special guests will be announced soon.
Nominees for the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards were announced last month and are available here. The awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.
Martin will receive the Vito Russo Award, which is named after one of GLAAD’s founders, and is presented to an openly LGBT media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for our community.
Previous Vito Russo Award honorees include Cynthia Nixon, Suze Orman, Rosie O’Donnell, Alan Cumming, Nathan Lane, Elton John, Liz Smith, k.d. lang, David LaChapelle, Brian Graden, and Tom Ford.
“Ricky coming out was a game changer for many gay and transgender Latino children, who for too long, did not have many out gay people to look up to,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios. “Through his music, videos and interviews, Ricky has sent an important message that our community wants the same things all people do: an equal chance to raise our families and take care of our loved ones.”
Chenoweth will receive the Vanguard Award which is presented to media professionals who have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community.
In May 2010, Chenoweth responded to a controversial ‘Newsweek’ article which incorrectly asserted that gay actors ‘cannot play straight roles.’ She defended gay actors including Sean Hayes, her co-star in ‘Promises, Promises,’ and called on ‘Newsweek’ to “embrace stories which promote acceptance, love and unity.”
Chenoweth has demonstrated her devotion to LGBT equality by participating in the National Equality [...]

Geoffrey Rush the Best Supportive Actor

By Roger Friedman/Leah Sydney
HollywoodNews.com: Geoffrey Rush plays Lionel Logue–the speech therapist–so brilliantly in “The King’s Speech.”
But forget Logue–Rush should be playing Lionel “Jet Lag.” Since the beginning of December, Rush has been commuting back and forth from Sydney to Los Angeles on 48 hour turnarounds to help support the movie, attend award shows, etc. He’s been appearing simultaneously on stage in “The Diary of a Mad Man.”
Best supporting actor? How about best Supportive actor since until Christian Bale came along in “The Fighter,” Rush was the dead on favorite for an Oscar?
The play ends its Sydney run on Feburary 6, then transfers to the Brooklyn Academy of Music from February 11th through mid March. There will likely be an understudy on Sunday, February 27th. Ironically, the venue at BAM is called The Harvey Theater.
On Monday, at a Hollywood lunch given for him at the Peninsula Hotel by his “Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Rush told our Leah Sydney that the jet lag wasn’t so bad after all. He said, ““I’m lucky to have these problems and I know it. I drink water, I sleep a lot.”
Bruckheimer told the crowd–including Angela Lansbury Sharon Stone , James Cromwell, Virginia Madsen, Dyan Cannon, Mickey and Jan Rooney, Patrick Stewart, Hal Holbrook, Frances Fisher, Martin Landau, Angie Dickinson, Sharon Stone, Brenda Vaccaro, Peter Gallagher, Ileana Douglas and Jane Seymour–that “Geoffrey, over the course of four ‘Pirates’ has transformed himself body and and soul into the Captain. He owns every part he plays and his performances haunt you. He’s more than a great actor, he’s quite simply a genius.”
Rush said that he and his wife Jane, “just jetted here from Australia yesterday, I’m doing a play there, and I’m going back tonight. I feel embraced by this town.” Then Renee Taylor’s phone rang loudly, to which Geoffrey quipped, answer that, “it might be your agent.”
Rush said that Martin Landau “gave me the best advice early in his career, which I can’t tell you, I have to protect patient/therapist privilege. I can say that he’s a party animal though.”
Rush confessed to Angela Lansbury that , “In my closeted metro sexual adolescent years, I did leap around my room lip synching to Mame. I thought she should know that.”
He thanked Sharon Stone for “yelling my name out with such enthusiasm at [...]
