Snow White and the Huntsman: Female characters engaging in stereo-typically male activities

HollywoodNews.com: “Why is this okay?” It was a random thought that I had while watching the final twenty minutes of Snow White and the Huntsman.
I suppose I should put a spoiler warning, but if you’ve seen even a single commercial or trailer you know that during the third act Snow White dons a suit of armor and rides into battle on horseback. It’s not that I took any offense at the notion, but I sat in the theater last night wondering why this kind of revisionism was completely acceptable for Snow White but not for James Bond.
Simply put, if someone tried to make an ‘Elseworlds’ version of James Bond where he was a British (or American?) spy during the 1880s and engaged in action-fueled espionage in a wild-west setting, I’d imagine the film punditry world would be in a tizzy. And let’s not even try to imagine what would happen if someone tried to make a Superman movie where Krypton didn’t explode, Lex Luthor was a CIA agent who was actually an alien, and Superman wore a spacesuit from which he received most of his powers, because J.J. Abrams wrote wrote just such a script that sent the Internet into pandemonium back in 2003.
The geek community (and arguably the mainstream media outlets in a desperate attempt to be ‘down’ with the geeks) explodes with outrage at any alleged deviation from their beloved source material. Spider-Man has organic web shooters… horror! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles might actually be from outer-space in their next movie… shock! James Bond drinks a beer Skyfall… gasp! But Alice (in Wonderland) dons armor and kills a dragon and no one cares. Snow White dons armor and rides on horseback into a medieval battle scenario and no one cares.

Snow White and the Huntsman New Trailer

By Scott Mendelson
HollywoodNews.com: This is certainly an improvement over the first teaser, if only in that it actually highlights Kristen Stewart’s Snow White over the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth). Whatever my thoughts on what this film represents (the rush to stick promising young actresses in the fairy tale princess box, the trend of giving completely green young filmmakers the reins to insanely expensive tentpoles, the creative bankruptcy that has spawned two competing Snow White films), this does look awfully compelling, at least on a visual level.
While I still think it’s insane, I now can see why Universal spent $175 million on this picture, as at least the money looks somewhat on the screen. There are certain special effects (the shattering soldiers for example) that are ‘new’, which is always a plus for your marketing campaign. And while the young leads seem quite boring, Charlize Theron appears to be having the time of her life as the ‘wicked queen’. But at the end of the day, this still a Snow White meets Lord of the Rings hybrid, and thus there are only so many narrative paths the story can take. Still, whatever my issues with the project in principal, this doesn’t look like a lazy thoughtless effort (that it’s going out as 2D theoretically implies a certain amount of care). Universal drops this one on June 1st. As always, we’ll see.

Kristen Stewart seeks protection in early “Snow White” photo

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: As Bella Swan, “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart always seemed to be seeking protection. From Edward (Robert Pattinson). From Jacob (Taylor Lautner). From all sorts of creatures of the night. And that trend seems to be continuing now that Stewart’s transitioning to another fairy tale heroine … at least, according to the new promotional image.
Chris Hemsworth can be seen rising to the challenge of protecting KStew in a new pic posted on the Facebook page for “Snow White and the Huntsman,” a reimagining of the vintage story that also stars Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen. “Sometimes a look can say more than words,” the caption reads. So very true.
So far, we’ve seen character banners for the various actors, and a trippy trailer from director Tarsem Singh.
What do you think of the new photo? At the very least, this version of Snow White appears to have way more action than its rival, “Mirror Mirror,” with Lily Collins and Julia Roberts in its leads.
“Snow White and the Huntsman” will be in theaters in June.

Snow White revamp “Mirror Mirror” moves its date

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: We have two Snow White stories in the pipeline for 2012, and for a while, they were trying to create as much space between them as physically possible. Now they’re moving just a little closer, from a release-date perspective.
Relativity announced in a release that Tarsem Singh’s “Mirror Mirror,” a comedic take on the classic fairy tale, has moved its release back two weeks, from March 16 to March 30. While the move might give Singh some time to tighten up his finished film, it also puts its in direct competition with the anticipated 3D sequel “Wrath of the Titans.”
It also moves it a bit closer to its Snow White rival, Kristen Stewart’s “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which reaches theaters on June 1.
Does it matter? Not likely. Based on existing trailers, the two Snow White projects couldn’t be more different in tone. And both will attract their respective audiences. “Mirror” fans just will have to wait a tad bit longer until they can see Lily Collins, Julia Roberts and Armie Hammer on screen.

Lily Collins admits auditioning for Kristen Stewart’s ‘Snow White’

HollywoodNews.com: Lily Collins will be playing Snow White in ‘Mirror, Mirror,’ but she almost could have been playing a different Snow White.
Collins recently admitted that she auditioned for ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ which eventually went to Kristen Stewart, states UsMagazine.com. “I auditioned for it, but I’ve been so excited for Kristen. I think that story is so different than ours and the girls are so different. She’s perfect for her version,” Collins commented.
But, while the characters might be different, the girls will both be bringing plenty of action: “I’ve been fight training and fencing for about three months now. I was kickboxing, doing some stuff on wires. It’s been really intense.”
Which one are you more excited for?

“Mirror Mirror” trailer takes comical approach to Snow White

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Once upon a time, rival Snow White pictures race toward theaters to capture audiences’ attentions with their unique spins on a classic fairy tale. A-list talents – from Julia Roberts to Kristen Stewart – lined up to participate. Which effort would be the fairest of them all?
Days after Universal’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” — starring Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron – revealed its first action-packed trailer, Relativity’s planned “Mirror Mirror” answered with a clip that suggests broad comedy … particularly from its seven dwarves.
We have it below.
In “Mirror,” director Tarsem Singh (“Immortals”) focuses on an Evil (and jealous) Queen (Roberts) who sets out to drain Snow White’s lifeblood through what appears to be Bollywood song-and-dance routines. Armie Hammer and Nathan Lane provide broad comic relief as a prince and royal servant, while Lily Collins of “The Blind Side” plays the maiden Snow White.
Singh’s visual inspiration, according to this clip, falls somewhere between Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam. But the tone of “Mirror Mirror” is completely different than “Huntsman” … and that might be good for both films.
“Mirror Mirror” will be in theaters on March 16, 2012. Here’s the trailer:

Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron in first “Snow White” trailer

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Mirror, mirror on the wall. What’s the coolest trailer you’ll see today? If you answered “Snow White and the Huntsman,” give yourself a bell.
The focus on this, the first clip of Rupert Sanders’ anticipated Snow White epic, lies on Charlize Theron’s wicked, beauty-engulfing queen. Which is fine by me. But it also sets the stage for what should be a mighty battle between the jealous despot and Snow White (Kristen Stewart), a warrior ready to defend her youthful vigor … to the death.
Here’s the trailer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8Y-a23IEhI
Nothing – and I do mean NOTHING – in that trailer reminds me of the classic Walt Disney cartoon. And I’m assuming that’s the point. Sanders’ spin on the fairy tale is dark, violent … like something out of Ridley Scott’s grizzled imagination.
“Thor” lead Chris Hemsworth, as you can see, co-stars as the “Huntsman” hired by Theron to track and kill Stewart’s Snow White. But it’s the dwarves I’m dying to see. Ian McShane? Toby Jones? Nick Frost? Ray Winstone?! Bob Hoskins?!?!
Sign me up, and stamp it with a #SWATH hashtag. “Snow White and the Huntsman” will be in theaters on June 1, 2012.

Disney prepping its own Snow White feature set in China

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: And then there were three.
As Universal and Relativity race to the finish line with dueling Snow White productions — starring the likes of Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer and Julia Roberts — Walt Disney has revealed that it’s negotiating with director Michael Gracey to helm a live-action Snow White feature tentatively titled “Order of the Seven.” The Wrap reports that Gracey served as an animator on “Happy Feet” but also directed a wildly popular “Roller Babies” commercial for Evian, which won the Guinness World Record for the most-watched online ad.
Gracey would replace “Water for Elephants” director Francis Lawrence, who once was attached but has since moved on.
And while two Snow White films already are heading to theaters in 2012, we wouldn’t see Disney’s production until 2013. The Wrap confirms that the plot, set in China, replaces dwarves with “members of an order of warriors who meet up with an Englishwoman and protect her from an ancient evil.”

“Snow White and the Huntsman” producers defend film at Comic-Con

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: The film is not yet in production—so what did “Snow White and The Huntsman” director Rupert Sanders and producers Joe Roth and Palak Patel have to share yesterday at Comic-Con? It was all about controlling the message about the competing Snow White films.
Fans were assured three things by Roth, whose voice was the strongest when it came to addressing skepticism about whether two films with identical characters could do well in the same year. In addition to highlighting vast differences (he likened the dark, epic approach that will be taken with “Snow White and the Huntsman” to the “Lord of the Rings” films), and saying that release dates separated by ten weeks would diminish real and perceived competition, Roth insisted that moviegoers are most attracted to genre—not plot—and that some fantasy fans were likely to see both Snow White films.
In the absence of footage from the film itself a short reel of Rupert Sanders’ work was shown—specifically commercials for video games such as “Halo 3” and “Call of Duty: Black Ops” which ran the gamut from evocative to fun. Finally, fans were shown a short, narrated clip that viewed like a movie trailer, utilizing unknown actors to stand in as Snow White characters. The clip, edited by Sanders, was another tactic meant to showcase his talent and give a sense for how “Snow White and the Huntsman” will look and feel under his direction. Filming for “Snow White and the Huntsman” begins in England next week.
