Andy Samberg hosts the 2013 Film Independent Spirit Awards

The Exclusive Canadian Broadcast of the 2013 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, February 23 rd at 10pm ET, will take place on Sony Movie Channel.
All of the action unfolds a day before the Academy Awards® from a beachside tent in Santa Monica, California with comedian and SNL alumni Andy Samberg hosting the 28th annual awards. The Spirit Awards celebrate artist-driven filmmaking and recognize the finest achievements of today’s independent filmmakers and is the premier awards event for the independent film community.
The Spirit Awards ceremony brings together top talent from independent film and Hollywood. 2013 nominees include Silver Linings Playbook and Moonrise Kingdom for Best Feature, Wes Anderson (Moonrise Kingdom) and David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) for Best Director. Nominees in the acting categories include Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook), Matthew McConaughey (Killer Joe), Helen Hunt (The Sessions) and Bruce Willis (Moonrise Kingdom). Daniel Craig wants a raise from Sony

This one is pretty simple. Daniel Craig allegedly (Hollywood Reporter) wants a raise for his appearance in Sony’s planned The Girl Who Played With Fire. Sony is refusing and may even be trying to wrangle a pay cut. Sony is allegedly digging its heels out of the desire to cut costs, as the first film grossed $232 million worldwide yet still barely broken even due to its frankly absurd $90 million budget. Had the film cost a more reasonable $60-$70 million, it would have been quite profitable for Sony. But it didn’t so it wasn’t. If we must see the two other chapters in the original series, then they damn-well shouldn’t cost nearly $100 million apiece. You could argue that Rooney Mara is an essential component of any sequel and should be hired even at a token higher cost this time around. But everyone else involved is expendable. Daniel Craig, whose character was as bland a male lead as you can ask for, is not a box office draw, period. If Sony sees fit to write out his journalist protagonist, I imagine it won’t affect the film’s financial fortunes one iota. Daniel Craig is one of countless actors who do just fine in a marquee role or a popular franchise but flounder elsewhere. If Daniel Craig wants a raise from Sony, he is welcome to ask for one for the next James Bond film. But outside of the 007 series, Daniel Craig isn’t a box office draw, period.

Skyfall has nearly doubled the previous domestic-best gross of the 007 series

Sony is reporting that Skyfall grossed $260,000 yesterday, which was just enough to put its domestic total over the magic $300 million mark. Putting that in perspective, this means that Skyfall has nearly doubled the previous domestic-best gross of the 007 series, the $168 million grossing Quantum of Solace and the $167 million-grossing Casino Royale. Now that it’s theatrical run is pretty much finished (it’s got $5 million left in the tank, at the absolutely most), let’s look at how it did in the grand scheme of things. Even when adjusted for inflation, the film is the third-biggest domestic earner in the series, surpassing the adjusted-$279 million gross of You Only Live Twice ($43 million in real 1967 dollars) and hanging out below only the $515 million-grossing Goldfinger ($51 million in 1964) and the $585 million-grossing Thunderball ($65 million in 1965).
It’s the biggest-grossing spy film of all time and the highest-grossing non-fantasy action film of all-time. Even when playing the inflation card, it’s the sixth biggest spy movie ever, behind the aforementioned 60′s 007 films, Mission: Impossible II ($310 million adjusted gross/$215 million actual gross) Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me ($315m/$205m), and the first Mission: Impossible ($318m/$181m). If you factor in pretty much every remotely recent non-fantastical/non superhero action franchise, it still ends up with more tickets sold than all but the likes of Beverly Hills Cop ($522m/$234m), Rambo: First Blood Part II ($329m/$150m), Rush Hour 2 ($310m/$226m), and Beverly Hills Cop II ($305m/$153m).

Woody Allen in Los Angeles without love

HollywoodNews.com: Our LEAH SYDNEY caught up with the legendary Woody Allen last night at the opening of the Los Angeles Film Festival. Woody and his cast premiered “To Rome with Love,” which opens on June 22nd.
LS-How do you feel about the rough and toughness of this business?
Woody- “I’m immune to it. I’m immune to when my films don’t do well I never really care, and when they do well I don’t care. I’ve kept myself out of that. I don’t have highs or lows. I just like to make the films and move on to the next film. This one is opening and I’m already deeply involved in my next film. I’ve moved on to the next film, this film is history to me. “Midnight in Paris” is ancient history. So when they do well that’s great and if they don’t, well there’s nothing I can do about it. That’s not why I’m in the business.
LS-How much of your next film will be shot in New York?
Woody- “A little bit, the rest in San Francisco. “
LS-You know you’re obviously loved in New York and now as much in Los Angeles.
Woody- “I like that both coasts love me. Now if we can just get the middle of the country, I’m home free.”
At the Q&A following the screening. Woody told the crowd:
“I had a wonderful time making it, living in Italy, eating pasta and working with beautiful actresses and scintillating men. If you do like it however, pressure Sony so they don’t put it in the witness protection program. So if you like the picture I’m thrilled, if you hate it and think it was a waste of time, don’t let me know because I get depressed easily.”
LAFF Festival Director Stephanie Allain told Leah about ‘the wow factor’ in getting Woody to come to LA.
“Kicking off the festival with Woody Allen couldn’t be cooler and bringing Woody to LA is a dream. I feel like we did it. Now we have ten more days of amazing movies, conversations, and music. I’m thrilled that the LAFF is getting the recognition that it should.”

“The Hunger Games” stays strong and tops $350m Weekend Box Office

HollywoodNews.com: It was an ‘everybody wins’ weekend at the box office as all three openers outperformed even the most optimistic expectations. The number one film of the weekend was not The Hunger Games but rather Think Like A Man. The all-star romantic comedy based off of Steve Harvey’s best-selling relationship self-help book grossed a somewhat surprising $33 million on just over 2000 screens. The Screen Gems film was notable in that the small studio made a real effort to market the African-American-centric rom-com both to black males and white audiences (Vulture has a detailed article about the marketing campaign). Racial demographics aren’t available yet, but the film played 63% female and 62% over 30. For what it’s worth, it earned an A from Cinemascore, including an A+ from audiences under 25. Even more impressive is that the film achieved a near-3x, including a token increase on Saturday (from $12 million to $13 million). The film has a ton of ‘would probably be a bigger star in a color-blind society’ actors, including Gabrielle Union, Meagan Good, Michael Ealy, Steve Harvey, and Taraji P. Henson. But the secret weapon may have been comedian Kevin Hart, who powered his stand-up concert film, Laugh At My Pain to $7 million last September despite playing on less than 300 screens. Pay no attention to this large opening folks, nothing to see about an under-served audience demographic delivering near-blockbuster numbers on a $13 million budget. Just move along and keep putting Anthony Mackie in fourth-billed supporting roles.
There will be lots of talk comparing this film to the Tyler Perry cannon, but know this: If the estimates hold up, Tim Story’s decidely secular romantic comedy will have opened higher than every Perry feature save the $41 million debut of Madea Goes To Jail. In fact, aside from that Perry release, I can’t think of another African-American comedy or drama that opened as high as this one perhaps ever. How well the film holds up over the long haul is an open question, and arguably *that’s* where the attempt at cross-racial outreach come into play. If Screen Gems can convince white audiences that this isn’t so much a ‘black film’ as much as it’s a Valentine’s Day-type ensemble piece that happens to star actors of color, it may have strong legs as its sampled by general [...]

The Hunger Games topped the box office for the third time in a row

HollywoodNews.com: Whatever my issues with The Hunger Games in terms of its quality as a film, its continued box office might can only be a good thing. Considering the current trend of studios basically remaking/rebooting/rehashing every remotely popular property over the last thirty years, the fact that this NEW adaptation from a NEW novel is going to be among the top three grossing films of the year by a healthy margin can only be a good lesson. Anyway, The Hunger Games topped the box office for the third time in a row this weekend, dropping a perfectly reasonable 43% in weekend three, for a weekend haul of $33.5 million. This gives the film a massive $302 million in seventeen days, which is the second-largest such haul for a film outside of summer in history. That’s the fifth-biggest seventeen-day total in history, and 11 days ahead of Alice In Wonderland, the closest non-summer competitor and just two days behind Avatar. Forget Twilight comparisons, it’s already passed Eclipse, which is the highest-grossing entry in the series. And forget the majority of the Harry Potter series, as it’s $14 million away from surpassing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and it’s already tied with the $303 million 17-day total of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part II with significantly larger second and third weekends to boot. At this point, it’s playing like Spider-Man 2 and the last Harry Potter film, with stronger weekends but lighter weekday grosses. The second Spidey pick ended its third weekend with $302 million and ended its domestic haul with $373 million, while Harry Potter 7.2 ended with $381 million. Factoring a rather busy April and the coming summer onslaught, that’s as good a place to predict as to where the first The Hunger Games ends up.
The top opener, one of two wide releases, was American Reunion. The unasked-for sequel is the fourth theatrical entry in the American Pie series but the eighth chapter counting the four direct-to-DVD films. This ‘most of you need a paycheck because none of you really broke out’ rehash opened to $21 million, which is almost identical to the $19 million debut this time last year of Scream 4. Woody Allen Is Back With “To Rome with Love”

HollywoodNews.com: On the heels of releasing the award-winning and commercial hit, Midnight in Paris, Sony Pictures Classics announced that on June 22 it will release Woody Allen’s latest film, the newly titled TO ROME WITH LOVE.
TO ROME WITH LOVE was a name selected as an homage to the eternal city of Rome where the film was shot on location last summer. This will be used for its worldwide release. The film’s former title, Nero Fiddled, while an appropriate and humorous phrase in the U.S., is not a familiar expression overseas and many international territories preferred a more globally understood name.
Written and directed by Woody Allen, TO ROME WITH LOVE is a story about a number of people in Italy — some American, some Italian, some residents, some visitors — and the romances and adventures and predicaments they get into. The film stars Allen, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Penélope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Greta Gerwig and Ellen Page. TO ROME WITH LOVE is a Gravier Productions film produced by Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, and financed by the Italian production and distribution company, Medusa Film.

21 Jump Street topped the box office this weekend with a whopping estimated $35 million

HollywoodNews.com: There isn’t anything too surprising about a well-marketed and well-reviewed mainstream comedy opening well on its debut weekend, especially when there are no new releases to compete against. Still, 21 Jump Street topped the box office this weekend with a whopping estimated $35 million. If that number holds up, it will be the seventh-biggest debut for an R-rated comedy ever, as well as the fifth-biggest R-rated comedy debut for a non-sequel and the largest such debut outside of summer. Sony knew they had a winner on their hands, as the $42 million-budgeted film was as much a commentary on the current trend of recycling brand names as an example of such. They’ve been screening it out the wazoo, building solid buzz and strong word-of-mouth, for months on end. Oddly enough, the film earned just a ‘B’ from Cinemascore, and I’m frankly puzzled by that. Yes, audiences under 25 gave it an A, but it’s such a winning film that I’m shocked it’s not playing well across the board (my 61-year old father-in-law laughed his butt off at the press screening). It’s a terrifically funny and uncommonly warm and sweet (for an R-rated action comedy) picture, so one would presume that it will have legs in the coming weeks. Hopefully Sony will focus its second round of advertising on getting females into the theater (although it played 47% female and 50% over/under 25 years old) by emphasizing how *not* sexist and/or homophobic the picture is. It faces no direct competition (aside from the all-consuming hurricane that is The Hunger Games next weekend) until April 6th, when Universal debuts American Reunion. This is another big win for Channing Tatum. This is his third-biggest debut behind The Vow ($40 million) and GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra ($54 million). He also has a second GI Joe movie as well as a Steven Soderbergh reunion in Magic Mike both opening on June 29th. This is Jonah Hill’s second biggest live-action debut behind the $54 million opening of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.
Following last week’s semi-wide release of Friends With Kids (which expanded to 640 screens this weekend and grossed another $1.5 million, dropping 25%), we have three more theoretically mainstream films that have been relegated to the arthouse circuit. Will Ferrell’s telanoleva satire Casa [...]

IMAX domination coming this Summer

HollywoodNews.com: Simply put, during the first twelve weeks of summer (May 4th to July 20th), there are six, maybe seven major movies all debuting in IMAX for at least the first week of their respective theatrical runs. Three of them are in May, one is in June, and two or three are in July. What are they you ask? Well…
The Avengers goes first on May 4th, with a week of 3D IMAX play before losing (or sharing?) those screens to Warner Bros’ Dark Shadows. Despite its big-scale action and explosions, Universal’s $212 million Battleship will go out purely on 35mm 2D film, which gives the Tim Burton vampire comedy two full weeks until it loses its 2D IMAX screens to Sony’s Men In Black 3D. Universal again forgoes IMAX for its next major tentpole, the $175 million (!!) Snow White and the Huntsmen, which debuts on June 1st. That gives Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones a two week run before being supplanted by 20th Century Fox’s Prometheus, which will get 3D IMAX screens for 3.5 weeks, owing to the surprising choice by Pixar to not go IMAX for Brave on June 22nd. and Paramount’s GI Joe: Retribution going out in 35mm 2D on June 29th. If that changes, then just add another one or two to the June tally. But come July 3rd, Sony steals the IMAX screens right back for The Amazing Spider-Man 3D. Spidey gets the IMAX screens for at least 1.5 weeks before Fox debuts Ice Age: Continental Drift on July 13th (which isn’t listed on the IMAX home page but is listed as debuting in IMAX 3D in Fox’s marketing materials). Come what may, summer basically ends on July 20th.
That of course is the release date for Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which not only features large chunks of the film shot on IMAX film but actually seems to be keeping those IMAX screens all the way until October 5th, when Disney debut’s Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie. Although not listed on the IMAX website, it is possible that Disney’s Finding Nemo 3D reissue and/or Sony’s Resident Evil: Retribution will end up going the IMAX route in September. That the last six weeks of summer 2012 features not a single IMAX debut would signify either that Warner Bros scored [...]
