James Franco is not at fault for cancelled broadway play

HollywoodNews.com: I read with some amusement in the last few days that Oscar nominated actor James Franco “backed out” of doing “Sweet Bird of Youth” on Broadway this fall. This isn’t exactly true. This column broke the news exclusively that Franco was set for “Sweet Bird” with Nicole Kidman back on November 30, 2010. I thought I’d try and add some reality to this latest chapter. http://www.showbiz411.com/2010/11/30/nicole-kidman-may-get-james-franco-as-broadway-co-star
Franco told the producers of “Sweet Bird” that he could only do the show this fall if it coincided with his famous school schedule at Yale. This was before he agreed to shoot “Oz, the Great and Powerful,” currently in production in Detroit. As his work schedule kept changing, insiders say, Franco asked that the play be moved to January rehearsals with a pre-Tony spring opening.
But then came “Oz” and other projects that interfered, as well as school. I told you on January 3, 2011 that Franco planned to direct both William Faulkner‘s “As I Lay Dying” and Cormac McCarthy‘s “Blood Meridian.”
But the latter, as well as “Sweet Bird” and another movie–that didn’t happen–are all from Tony winning producer Scott Rudin. It may have been a case of too many eggs in one basket–I’m told it was getting confusing because Rudin wanted Franco to do some of the projects, and Franco wanted to do others. In the end, communications snafu’d in all directions.

HollywoodNews.com: Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias had an interesting chat with fans on stage, during his Australian concert recently.
Reportedly, Enrique brought some guys on stage to talk about their sex lives, which led to a discussion about his loss of virginity when he was 17, allegedly. According to E! online, Enrique said, ‘Maybe I have the Spanish looks but I have the smallest penis in the world. I’m serious.’
The singer went on to confessing that he was very nervous before his first time, and revealed that ‘it lasted ten seconds’.
Does anyone think Enrique might have shared too much info?

James Franco to spend even more time in school

HollywoodNews.com: James Franco seems very, very serious about his time at school and now he reportedly plans on furthering his education even more.
The actor will reportedly be enrolling at the University of Houston in the fall of 2012, states UsMagazine.com.
“James Franco was scheduled to enter the PhD program in Literature and Creative Writing in Fall 2011, but he requested a deferral for an additional year, which the faculty granted, so he is now scheduled to begin doctoral work here in fall 2012,” the school commented.
Franco has already spent time at UCLA, Columbia, Yale and NYU.

Anne Hathaway shines as Academy Awards host; James Franco, not so much

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Though James Franco and Anne Hathaway were billed as co-hosts of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, it was commonly implied that Hathaway played second fiddle. As the youngest host in Academy Awards history, one of few women, and an actor who had no nominations this year, it seemed that Franco was viewed as the bigger star.
Yet, it was Hathaway—not Franco—who shined on the live telecast, who came off as more vivacious and better-suited to the awards show brand of comedy. In contrast, Franco’s deadpan humor and subdued body language made the host come off as bored.
Was it the writing? Perhaps. Franco was certainly just reading his lines. Yet, the lack of chemistry between the hosts reflected the most poorly on him. Despite Franco’s lackluster performance, the night was a clear win for Hathaway who, despite her age, proved she could hold her own.

Julia Robert lobbies for a Javier Bardem Oscar nom

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Talk about an Oscar vote of confidence!
Recently, when we interviewed Javier Bardem and talked in depth about his hauntingly brilliant “Biutiful” performance, we mentioned the A-list colleagues who were stepping up and throwing their support behind the actor’s award campaign. We talked about Sean Penn hosting a SAG Q-and-A with Bardem, of Ben Affleck saying Bardem “is on another level from the rest of us,” and Ryan Gosling openly campaigning for a Bardem Oscar nomination.
Add Julia Roberts’ name to the list of celebrities who will be furious of Bardem does not receive an Oscar nomination for his work.
“He’s so raw and completely open to sharing every emotion this character has,” Roberts said to EW during a screening of the film Roberts held for a select industry crowd.
When asked why she thinks Bardem has not been recognized yet by SAG or the HFPA, Roberts said, “I think the movie hasn’t gotten the exposure. You don’t know where it is. It’s like this hidden little jewel. Especially in this particular season, people don’t hunt for things. They just take what you throw in their face.”
And, in her most blunt statement, Roberts basically came out and said if a performance as remarkable as Bardem’s gets overlooked, then the industry is “f—ed.”
It is fairly remarkable that Bardem is being overlooked by the major awards groups and the critical community. Yes, “Biutiful” is a difficult film to watch because it is bleak, but Bardem was routinely singled out by reviewers who praised his immersive performance.
And all of the oversights will be wiped clean is Bardem can secure the most important nod – the Oscar nomination. I honestly can’t remember the last time this many actors came out and openly lobbied for another actor to nab a nomination for a particular role. Is Roberts in time? Will the pleas of Bardem’s colleagues be heard? We’ll know soon enough.

James Franco has no fear when it comes to the Oscars

HollywoodNews.com: Even though Franco may be embarking on arguably the greatest endeavor of his short career, he still has no fear. Yes, initially Franco had a lot of reservations about hosting the Academy Awards, but those soon subsided.
“When [Oscar producer Bruce Cohen] asked me to host, I was very, very surprised, and my initial reaction was ‘No,’” Franco told Entertainment Weekly. “Then I thought about it and I thought, well, why not? Because I’ll look bad? Well, I don’t care.”
Even though he had naysayers, Franco went along with the decision anyway. “All my representatives were saying, ‘No!” He went on to say. “That always sparks something in me. So I said, ‘Yes, of course!’ Because that reaction that they have is based on conventional wisdom of what makes a good career. And that can be boring,” OMG reports.
Do you think Franco will do a good job hosting the Academy Awards? Let us know what you think.

James Franco is heading back to ‘General Hospital’ in the midst of Oscar season

HollywoodNews.com: Even though James Franco has come a long way this year, given his buzz worthy performance in 127 Hours, the man has not forgotten his roots. Franco will be returning to his old home at General Hospital for a small, two-episode stint airing the Friday before the Oscars ceremony and the day after. Sources say it will act as a teaser for a longer story arc that Franco will be embarking upon in 2011.
Some may find it strange that after reaching a new height of his career that Franco would still want to return to his old gig, but apparently, Franco is extremely gracious to GH for helping him flex his acting muscles and helping him land the part in Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours.
“James has been very gracious in crediting us,” says GH producer, Jill Farren Phelps. “Apparently, we worked his memorization muscle to the point where he was able to blow Boyle out of the water.” TV Guide reports.
Franco; a truly class act who gets excited by his craft, no matter what the budget.
