Whitney Houston Photos: Fame and Sexuality

By Roger Friedman, ©2012
HollywoodNews.com: From an updated story I published in 1992: This Sunday, 1500 of Whitney Houston’s closest friends will gather in New Jersey for her wedding to singer Bobby Brown. The ceremony will most likely be at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, followed by a reception at Whitney’s house near Bernardsville. Rev. Marvin Winans, brother of singers BeBe and Cece, will perform the service. Stevie Wonder will sing, possibly his old hit “You and I” or maybe something new that he’s written for the occasion.
SCROLL DOWN FOR WHITNEY HOUSTON PHOTO GALLERY IN HER MEMORY
“Every important black person in show business will be there,” says a black journalist who’s on the Whitney watch twenty four hours a day. Freddie Jackson is bringing Toukie Smith. Ashford and Simpson will be there. Dionne Warwick of course. The ubiquitous Winans, too. (Last month, Whitney and Bobby took a pre-wedding honeymoon cruise with them.) Aretha Franklin, who is notorious for not boarding airplanes, could very well show up in her fully-equipped Winnebago. Randall Cunningham, who Whitney once dated, is even coming. LaToya Jackson was invited, but can’t make it. But you can bet Arista Records president and Houston mentor Clive Davis can and will. In a way, he’s paying for the whole thing.
The timing is perfect. Whitney’s birthday is this week also. (Four years ago, she threw herself a huge bash at the house.) And Bobby’s new single is being released this week, so at least there’s a media tie-in.
Two summers ago, Whitney, who had grown up with parents who separated when she was a teenager, told me: “For a long time I said I don’t want to get married. I don’t want kids. I just don’t want to be bothered with it. But now I do. I want to get married and have kids. The kind of guy I want to marry is like me…you know…got to have a great sense of humor. Boy do I love to laugh!”
It’s a good thing Whitney’s got a sense of humor. Bobby is in his early twenties; Whitney’s near 30. She has no children and has never been married, but her intended has not one but three illegitimate children, according to sources, with possibly a fourth due soon. (The New York [...]

Sting celebrates 60th birthday with Bruce, Gaga, Stevie, and more

HollywoodNews.com: Exclusive: Sting’s 60th birthday party at the Beacon Theater was a four hour celebration of the rock star’s career and songs with his own band and almost a dozen famous musicians performing his music. They included Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Herbie Hancock, Lady Gaga. Branford Marsalis, will.i.am, Mary J. Blige, Chris Botti, Jimmy Nail, and Met Opera star Bryn Terfel. The latter opened the second act of the show with a rendition of “Roxanne” certain to become part of pop history–it was hilarious and serious at the same time, and showed how Sting’s punkiest new wave music has resonance in many forms.
There were many extraordinary moments on stage and off, where documentary maker Joe Berlinger brought the primary member of the just released Memphis 3, Jason Baldwin. And there were also Robert Downey and his wife Susan (Downey was also in the show), Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Tom Brokaw, Jake Gyllenhaal, directors Bennett Miller (“Moneyball”) and Darren Aronofsky (“Black Swan”), actresses Lorraine Bracco and Melanie Griffith, Fisher Stevens, and Harvey Weinstein, as well as Patti Scialfa (Mrs, Springsteen), designer Kai Milla Morris (Mrs. Wonder), and Alexa Ray Joel with her dad’s new girlfriend. Michael J. Fox and wife Tracy Pollan attended the afternoon run through only.
It was family night for Sting, too, with his brother and both of his sisters, plus, of course, the magnificent Trudie Styler (Mrs. Sting) radiant in a slinky Pucci gown, and all six of their kids including Sting’s eldest Joe Sumner, who sang with his father on the poignant “Why Do I Cry for You?” dedicated to Sting’s late father. Also present were about a dozen or so of Sting’s pals from his early days in Newcastle, England including the musicians who played with him in jazz groups like the Phoenix Jazzman and Last Exit.

Sting is celebrating his 60th birthday with a concert

HollywoodNews.com: Sting is celebrating his 60th birthday in a big way–and not just with a gorgeous box set of his solo music due on September 27th. Coinciding with his 25th anniversary as a solo artist, the menschy activist singer is putting on all star concert at the Beacon Theater on October 1st. The show proceeds will go straight to the Robin Hood Foundation, too.
Guests include Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Herbie Hancock, Mary J. Blige, Chris Botti and the ubiquitous Lady Gaga. All of Sting’s longtime players will be featured, too, including the great Dominic Miller. Tickets are not being sold to the public, but a limited number are being made available to fan club members through sting.com.
Meantime, not to be outdone, Trudie Styler aka Mrs. Sting is appearing all this week at Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival in “A Dish of Tea with Doctor Johnson.” Then the play–for which Styler and cast have won raves–returns for a three week run in London’s West End. Bravo! Oh yes, she’s also producing the currently filming “Imogene” with Kristen Wiig. This column reported on that film first back in mid June, by the way.
PS If you haven’t read Sting’s 2003 memoir, “Broken Music,” I highly recommend it. Beautifully done, an absorbing read about the musician’s childhood in Newcastle and his life leading up to the forming of the Police. I can’t wait for the next volume!

Carrie Underwood, Diana Krall, John Mayer, and Stevie Wonder will join Tony Bennett at AARP Concert

HollywoodNews.com: AARP today announced that Carrie Underwood, Diana Krall, John Mayer and Stevie Wonder will join American icon Tony Bennett for a landmark concert event in Los Angeles to benefit Drive to End Hunger, a national effort by AARP and AARP Foundation to end hunger among older Americans. This musical spectacular will take place at the STAPLES Center on Saturday, September 24th and also celebrates the singer’s milestone 85th birthday. To date, Drive to End Hunger has organized food and cash donations to provide more than 2.7 million meals through local hunger relief organizations.
Billed as AARP Presents: TONY BENNETT LIVE IN CONCERT – Benefit for Drive to End Hunger, this one-night-only event will feature songs from Bennett’s anxiously awaited new album, Tony Bennett: Duets II, slated for a September 20th release.
“It is terrific to be working with AARP once again, especially for a cause like ending hunger among older Americans, which often does not get much attention. I know this event will make a big difference and I am thrilled to be a part of it and have some of my favorite musical performers join me for the concert,” said Bennett.
In celebration of Bennett’s birthday, AARP will also construct a 16-foot high electronic “cake” on the STAPLES Center plaza that will allow people to write birthday greetings to Bennett and will show videos of the singer. A vital musical artist at the peak of his career, Bennett is living proof that you can do anything you want—no matter your age—if you’re young at heart.
