The Hunger Games to be released in China

HollywoodNews.com: Lionsgate announced today that THE HUNGER GAMES, which has already grossed nearly $620 million at the worldwide box office, has been approved for release in China in the first half of June.
The film will be released nationwide in China with both dubbed and subtitled prints by The China Film Group in conjunction with Lionsgate’s promotional partner, Talent International. THE HUNGER GAMES will be one of the first Hollywood studio films to be released in China under the new blockbuster revenue sharing agreement announced in February that allows Western distributors to collect up to 25% of a film’s receipts in China.
“THE HUNGER GAMES juggernaut continues to gain momentum around the world, and we’re thrilled that we can now share the exciting first installment of THE HUNGER GAMES franchise with Chinese moviegoers in June,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Patrick Wachsberger and Rob Friedman. “China is already one of the leading territories at the international box office, and the launch of THE HUNGER GAMES in this key market is another sign of the franchise’s continuing emergence as a truly global phenomenon.”
THE HUNGER GAMES has already grossed more than $380 million at the North American box office where it ranks 13th among the highest-grossing films of all time. It has grossed nearly $620 million worldwide with upcoming launches in China and Japan.
“We view China as an increasingly important market for our content in Asia,” said Wendy Reeds, Executive Vice President of Content Sales & Distribution for Celestial Tiger Entertainment (CTE), Lionsgate’s venture with Saban Capital Group and Astro’s Celestial Pictures in Asia. “The Chinese box office grew by more than 30% last year to over $2 billion, and THE HUNGER GAMES’ approval for nationwide release in China is a major step in translating the enormous commercial potential of this huge market into reality.”
About THE HUNGER GAMES

A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.
Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp [...]

HollywoodNews.com: We knew “The Hunger Games” was going to be huge. We didn’t know it would be IMAX-sized. Yet Lionsgate just confirmed via a press release that the film will be presented on IMAX’s giant screens for a one-week, limited engagement.

“With this news, the release of The Hunger Games has truly become an epic event,” said Lionsgate’s Joe Drake, in a statement.
“The Hunger Games and IMAX are a match made in heaven — fans love this book because its world is so vividly imagined and seeing the film in IMAX will make them feel as if they have landed right in the middle of the action. It is the ideal way for fans to experience this film for the first time,” he added.

Lionsgate grabs the “Chaos Walking” trilogy

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: As studios continue snatching up literary series in hopes of finding the next “Twilight” or “Harry Potter” franchise, Lionsgate announces that it has acquired the YA trilogy “Chaos Walking” for adaptation, and will begin with the opening book, “The Knife of Never Letting Go.”
Much like “The Hunger Games,” Patrick Ness’s story takes place in a dystopian future, only here, an infection called the Noise suddenly makes all thought audible, which means privacy has vanished.
“In the ensuing chaos, a corrupt autocrat threatens to take control of the human settlements and wage war with the indigenous alien race, and only young Todd Hewitt holds the key to stopping planet wide-destruction,” according to a release.
More from Lionsgate, which will develop, produce and distribute all three films:
“Although these stories are set in a critical time in the future, they speak volumes about what is happening all over the world today, and about the power of young people to challenge the status quo and change the course of our future,” said Alli Shearmur, Lionsgate’s President of Motion Picture Production and Development, who will be overseeing the production for the studio, with Senior Vice President of Motion Picture Production Jim Miller. “We feel privileged to be bringing these powerful and exquisite books to cinematic life.”
Critics have hailed the trilogy, which is published by Candlewick Press in the US and Walker Books in the UK, as “one of the outstanding literary achievements of the present century,” (The Irish Times), and described it as “furiously paced, terrifying, exhilarating and heartbreaking,” (The Sunday Telegraph.). The Guardian’s Lucy Mangan recognizes the series’ gripping quality and broad appeal, saying “I would press the Chaos Walking trilogy urgently on anyone, anyone at all.”
But The Wall Street Journal makes the most apt reference given that the series has found a home at Lionsgate, noting that “With its dark tone, violence, and readerly fanaticism, the book belongs firmly beside Suzanne Collins’s work.” Lionsgate is also the studio behind THE HUNGER GAMES, based on Collins’s worldwide bestselling trilogy of the same name.
“A sense of urgency and momentum permeates these stories- it makes the books ones you can’t put down, and will make the movies ones you can’t miss on the big screen,” said Drake of his decision to acquire the adaptation rights. “But apart from the story elements, the world in the stories is so vividly imagined. These are books, [...]

“Hunger Games” trailer disappointed, but the movie probably won’t

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: I won’t lie—I expected more from “The Hunger Games” trailer that premiered at tonight’s 2011 Video Music Awards. Previous MTV awards shows (admittedly, the Movie Awards may be a bit stronger in this area) have not only given a first look at hot new trailers, but extended clips that serve as honest-to-goodness teasers for anticipated films.
Tonight’s “Hunger Games” clip was short (like, 40 seconds short, once you got past slow transitions and Lionsgate branding). Most shots involved main character Katniss running for her life as fire traps stalked her through rather ordinary woods. Exciting? Not particularly. But it didn’t dampen my desire to see the film.
“The Hunger Games” and the franchise Suzanne Collins has built around it tells a great story, and Jennifer Lawrence will finally be given the chance to shine as the lead in a film that people will actually see. Her Academy Award-nominated performance in “Winter’s Bone” went under-recognized given Natalie Portman’s sweep last year with “Black Swan,” and the film itself was so indie that she had limited chance for exposure.

“Hunger Games” clip to screen at MTV Video Music Awards

By Kim Palacios
hollywoodnews.com: Fans of Suzanne Collins’ hit book series that kicked off with “The Hunger Games” will be able to see an extended clip from the film on tonight’s MTV Video Music Awards.
MTV has issued a “first look” clip, which is now available online (a disappointing two seconds of what will be shown at the VMAs), revealing only that the scene to be shown will reveal protagonist Katniss (played by Jennifer Lawrence) running through the woods. To see the clip in its entirety, tune in to the Video Music Awards at 9:00PM EST/8:00PM CST.
