As “Troll Hunter” opens, remake rights go to Chris Columbus

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: It’s always been a trend, though it seems to be happening more and more: Find a foreign film that works quite well and immediately greenlight an American version.
Sometimes it’s a drama (take the U.S. version of Susanne Bier’s “Brothers” with Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman for a recent example). More often than not, though, it is a horror film, from “The Ring” to the recent “Let Me In,” which recreated the Swedish hit “Let the Right One In.”
This morning, we’re learning of another creature feature that’s getting a U.S. polish, even though the original, foreign version is just now hitting our shores. We’re talking about “Troll Hunter,” André Øvredal’s low-budget Norwegian thriller about … well, mythbusters who video tape their troll hunt, only to have the footage found long after their disappearance (hello, “Blair Witch.”)
Now Deadline is reporting that Chris Columbus’ 1492 Pictures and CJ Entertainment & Media have picked up the rights to remake “Troll Hunter” for U.S. audiences.
“Troll Hunter was a visceral, thrilling cinematic rock and roller coaster ride of a movie,” the “Harry Potter” director said. “Visually, there are scenes in this film that American audiences have never seen. We want to introduce an International audience to this amazing moviegoing experience!”
But will they increase the budget? And if they do, will that remove some of the original’s grungy charms?

Maggie Gyllenhaal hears the “Voices From the Stone”

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Maggie Gyllenhaal doesn’t work as frequently as her brother, Jake, but when she chooses a project – be it an indie like “Sherrybaby” or a blockbuster like “The Dark Knight” – it usually has meaning.
So we’re immediately paying close attention to “Voice From the Stone,” a supernatural thriller directed by Eric Howell that has lured the leading lady, according to Variety.
As the trade puts it, Gyllenhaal would play a nurse “drawn to the aid of a young boy who is haunted by malevolent forces within the walls of an old house in the Italian countryside.”
Sounds reminiscent of “The Orphanage,” which was brilliant. Dean Zanuck and Stefano Gallini are on the hook to produce “Voices,” which is based on the Italian novel “Le Voce Della Pietra” by Silvio Raffo.

Taylor Swift admits it’s all about how relationships feel

HollywoodNews.com: Taylor Swift seems to know a thing or two about love considering how often she seems to find herself in relationships, but for her it is about nothing other than the feeling.
Swift revealed to ‘InStyle’ magazine that she prefers to focus on her feelings when she is dating someone, states RadarOnline.com.
“You never know who’s going to come into your life and for me, when I picture the person I want to end up with, I don’t think about what their career is, or what they look like. I picture the feeling I get when I’m with them,” Swift said about what she wants in a relationship.
And it seems like she is taking that chance as she has been in rumored relationships with Joe Jonas and Jake Gyllenhaal.

“Source Code” director Duncan Jones talks Jake Gyllenhaal, “Quantum Leap” and his next sci-fi film

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: We couldn’t wait to see what Duncan Jones would do next.
The director’s work on the solitary sci-fi thriller “Moon” immediately designated him as one of the hottest storytellers on our planet. Few probably expected to follow up his debut picture with another science-fiction tale, but he finds more than a few new ways to spin old concepts in “Source Code,” a time-warping mystery starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a soldier skipping through the dials to find out who has planted a bomb on a Chicago-bound train.
We were able to sit down with Jones and dive into Gyllenhaal’s humor, the “Groundhog’s Day” influence, and his love of Scott Bakula and “Quantum Leap.”
HollywoodNews.com: Tell me something you learned on “Moon” that really came in handy and bailed you out on “Source Code.”
Duncan Jones: I would say that humor is one of the strongest tools that you’ve got in filmmaking. And I don’t just mean having a good sense of humor when you are on the set. I mean in storytelling terms; being able to use humor and lighten the tone of the film. When I read the script for ‘Source Code,’ I thought it was amazing, and it was very fast-paced. Narratively, it just all came together. But the tone of the film was quite serious. The big lesson I learned on ‘Moon’ is that you can use humor to actually add pathos and help an audience connect to a protagonist. So that’s what I brought to “Source Code.”
When you were looking for leading men, were you looking for actors who could blend humor and drama?
To be honest, it was the other way around. I actually met up with Jake to find a project for us to work on together, and he introduced me to the “Source Code” script. He has seen “Moon” and was a big fan of “Moon” and loved what I had done with Sam Rockwell. He said he really wanted us to work together. He suggested the “Source Code” script, I went off and read it, and said, “Yeah, I think we can do this. I can really get my teeth into this.” But my take and interpretation would be to lighten the tone and to try and inject a little bit of humor into it.
Were you being bombarded with sci-fi scripts and pitches after “Moon?”
At that time? Yeah. Pretty much exclusively, it [...]

Jake Gyllenhaal scuffle overshadows “Source” – SXSW

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: The world premiere of Duncan Jones’ “Source Code,” which kicked off this years’ South By Southwest film portion on Friday night, is being overshadowed by a strange story involving Jake Gyllenhaal, a camera, and a men’s room.
Twitter exploded with accounts of a scuffle between Gyllenhaal, who plays a soldier in Jones’ sci-fi thriller, and a guy who tried to take his photograph … er, mid-stream.
“Gyllenhaal apparently grabbed the dude mid-photo, threw him against the wall and was like, ‘are we really gonna do this right now?’” Tweeted Cinematical’s Erik Davis.
And JoBlo, who reportedly was in the men’s room when the “fight” occurred, updated, “Guy just tried to take Jake Gyllenhaal’s picture while he was taking a leak. Cops came. Brouhaha ensued.”
So fists are flying in Austin as SXSW gets underway. I’ll have a full review of “Source Code” on the site soon, but it’s a twisty little mystery about a bomb on a train that suffers a happy ending it never earns. Still, worth a glance when it opens on April 1.
Other films getting great buzz out of SXSW on Friday are James Wan’s ghost story “Insidious,” Susanne Bier’s Oscar-winning “In a Better Place,” and the cult film “Sound of My Voice,” which burst out of Sundance on a wave of positive reviews and just continues to collect raves.
More on SXSW as the fest continues.

“Source Code” trailer from Oscar night arrives online – SXSW

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Why are all of the best movie trailers aired during the Super Bowl? Shouldn’t the Academy Awards have just as many high-profile commercials for anticipated blockbusters? After all, you’re playing to an audience of movie lovers. Don’t you want them to see the latest “Captain America” or “Transformers” spot?
Instead, the one film I can remember teasing itself throughout last weekend’s Academy Awards was Duncan Jones’ “Source Code” … which is great for Jones and Summit Entertainment, but puzzling for every other studio. But I digress.
“Source Code” stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a time-traveling soldier (of sorts) who keeps leaping back to the last few minutes before a Chicago-bound train explodes. His mission is to locate the bomber and prevent a disaster, but Michelle Monaghan’s hotness keeps distracting him. Totally understandable.
The trailer that ran during the Oscars found its way online. We’ve posted it below.
We’re also anxious to cover “Source Code” as it prepares to open South By Southwest later this month. The film, which also stars Vera Farmiga, opens everywhere on April 1.

Jake Gyllenhaal parties with his exes

HollywoodNews.com: Jake Gyllenhaal could have had some very awkward moments last night as he attended the same Oscar bash as two of his recent exes.
Gyllenhaal showed up at the ‘Vanity Fair’ Oscar bash where both Reese Witherspoon and Taylor Swift were enjoying their nights, states UsMagazine.com. It’s not known if any of the exes had any sort of exchange.
While it seems Witherspoon and Gyllenhaal are on fine terms, the end of the relationship with the actor and Swift is still a bit of a mystery.
Do you think they tried to avoid each other?
