Paula Abdul was the “glue that held it together” in ‘Idol,’ says producer

By Roger Friedman
HollywoodNews.com: On Monday night, March 8th, I ran into former “American Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe at Soho House in Beverly Hills.
I asked Lythgoe about the “American Idol” hosts. He told me that he still thought Sir Elton John was the best choice to replace Simon Cowell.
“He’s absolutely it,” said Lythgoe, who also said he thought Ellen DeGeneres was still warming up and has yet to show her full potential. He obviously sensed then that she wasn’t a keeper.
And he missed Paula Abdul. “She was the glue that held it together, wasn’t she?” he said wistfully.

Nate Berkus discusses his new show and his first guest

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: “The Nate Berkus Show” will premiere on Sept. 13 and will mark the first time an openly gay man is hosting a nationally syndicated daytime talk show.
Nate Berkus is the interior designer who we’ve gotten to know through his frequent appearances on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and he will be talking to people from all walks of life about their lives and their experiences.
His first guest will be Elizabeth Edwards and when I chatted with Nate a few days ago at a TV Critics Association Press Tour party, we talked about the brave and resilient wife of former vice presidential candidate John Edwards.
I’ll share what Nate had to say about her and about the format of the new show a few weeks down the road when the show gets closer to airdate.
For now, I want to share what Nate had to say about being a gay man on television.
Nate’s life became more public in December 2004 when he and his partner, photographer Fernando Bengoechea were vacationing at a beach resort in Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean tsunami hit. While Nate survived, Fernando is missing and presumed dead.
Nate appeared on “Oprah” on January 17, 2005, to talk about his ordeal and the loss of his love.
“I’ve never defined myself by being gay, I’ve defined myself by being me,” Nate told me. “I’m a son, I’m a brother, I’m an uncle, I’m a gay man. Everybody has lots of different sides to them.”

A solution to the increase of imported TV stars is a talent tariff

By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith
HollywoodNews.com: What do Hollywood casting directors have against American actors? Oh, sure, we’ve been seeing this explosion of Brits, Aussies, Kiwis, Irish folk and other English-speaking foreigners on U.S. primetime for several years now, but there hasn’t been any complaining out of fear the U.K would want to take back Hugh Laurie, and goodness knows nobody wanted that.
However, things have gone too far. Now we have an Australian (Alex O’Loughlin) playing Steve McGarrett on CBS’s new “Hawaii Five-O,” for crying out loud. Plus, there’s this 13 trillion-dollar national debt thing that makes even ludicrous revenue-generating ideas sound good. So the time has come for Uncle Sam to make some money off this imported TV star phenomenon. The time has come for a Talent tariff.
Think of the increasingly annoying Piers Morgan, for instance. The arrogant Fleet Street tabloid editor — whose claims to fame include being fired in the wake of the revelation that Daily Mirror photos purportedly showing British troops mistreating Iraqi prisoners were faked. Brighton-born Simon Cowell ordained Guildford-born Piers as his substitute (a.k.a. “the mean one”), when Simon himself was contractually prevented (“American Idol”) from being an “America’s Got Talent” judge — and America went along. This proves America’s weakness toward believing anyone with a British accent is qualified for their job. Now Morgan is the man who would be King, as in Larry King, as in being named as the new host of King’s 25-year-old CNN show.
This is not right. If we have to take Piers Morgan, we should be making money on it — or at least, the British should have to take Perez Hilton in exchange.
Speaking of “America’s Got Talent,” there’s oh-so-much more to love about Piers’ London-born cohort Sharon Osbourne than him. And yet, Ozzy’s purple-red-haired frau is nearing massive over-exposure with yet another gig, CBS’s yet-untitled daytime show for fall. But let us not be irritated. Let us be enriched. Talent tariff, people!

Jordin Sparks on Ellen’s ‘Idol’ departure: ‘She lit up the room’

HollywoodNews.com: For Jordin Sparks, it’s sad to see Ellen DeGeneres depart “American Idol.”
“I’m definitely going to miss watching her. She lit up the room and definitely knew how to break the ice if things got tense,” said Sparks.
Digital Spy was reading the story on MTV News.
In addition, Sparks found that DeGeneres found a “good groove” on the musical competition show. Also, she could make contestants feel comfortable.
If given the chance, Sparks wouldn’t necessarily jump at the chance to be on the judge’s panel.
“[I would say] yes, because I’ve been in the contestant’s position and no because, even though it wouldn’t be on purpose, I don’t like hurting other people’s feelings.”

Randy Jackson says “the only thing that’s for sure is Ryan Seacrest”

HollywoodNews.com: While there have been a lot of speculation as to who will take over “American Idol’s” judging panel following the departure of Simon Cowell, Ellen Degeneres, and Kara DioGuardi, it seems that everyone left who’s involved is keeping their lips sealed shut.
Judge Randy Jackson told E! News, “The only thing that’s for sure is Ryan [Seacrest]. Nothing has been decided.”
However, Jackson did have something to say regarding the rumors that Jennifer Lopez may be a new judge. He said, “If Jennifer Lopez is a judge, I would be very happy. I love her.”

Simon Cowell letting Cheryl Cole borrow his digs

HollywoodNews.com: ‘X Factor’ judge Simon Cowell has reportedly offered Cheryl Cole his LA mansion to film the ‘judges’ house’ stage of the competition.
Cole, 27, has recently been forced to pull out of the show after she picked up malaria but she is now in good health and recently flew to LA to start work on her next album. Cowell, 50, has allegedly given her the mansion so she can have some privacy.
A source said to UK newspaper The Mail On Sunday: “Simon has told Cheryl she can stay and film some of the show there if she wishes. He’s very protective of his home – it is his sanctuary – but he’s agreed to do it for Cheryl. He is desperate for her to get back on the show and has opened the doors of his home to her if that’s where she wants to stay and work.”

Fox executives give no leads on “American Idol’s'” judge’s panel

By Greg Hernandez
HollywoodNews.com: What we do know is this: Ellen DeGeneres and Simon Cowell will not be returning to American Idol next season.
The two top executive at the Fox broadcast network faced a ballroom filled with journalists this morning with no official word on who’s in [Jennifer Lopez? Steven Tyler?) or who else is out (Kara DioGuardi?).
“I truly wish we were going to walk out a panel of judges for next year. If we had signed deals we would have done that,” said Fox Chairman Peter Rice who added that “much of the information that has been written [about Idol] is accurate” and some of it is “wildly inaccurate.”
“There are no signed deals with anyone,” Rice added.
Reporters persisted in asking Rice and President of Entertainment Kevin Reilly [pictured with Rice during January’s press tour) about the future of Idol both during the session then during informal chats after.
Neither cracked.
But at one point during the session, Reilly tried to diffuse the situation with humor and started off his answer to a question by joking: “First let me start by telling you who the judges are going to be on “American Idol.”
