Spotlight on the Stars: Steve Carell

For this week’s spotlight piece, I wanted to look at someone from the cast of the upcoming movie Foxcatcher. I had three incredibly talented men to choose from, but I ultimately went with Steve Carell, a talented comedic actor finally getting his time to shine dramatically. The man has been snubbed for Oscar attention before, but this very well could be the year that he finally breaks through and gets an Academy Award nomination. That would cement him not only as the A-list comedy star, but as a truly respected dramatic performer as well. As such, he’s a perfect candidate to shine a spotlight on today.
Carell first got his start on the small screen, showing up on television programs like The Dana Carvey Show, Over the Top, Watching Ellie, and of course The Daily Show. The latter was where he really made his initial mark, playing a correspondent. He then began to pop up on the big screen in supporting roles, notably with Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy, Bruce Almighty (stealing scenes in both of those pictures), and the Woody Allen movie Melinda and Melinda, plus Bewitched as well. The groundwork was being put down for the man to really dive in to a starring role and when the opportunity came along, he didn’t disappoint.
He became a star with The 40 Year Old Virgin, a film he both co-wrote with Judd Apatow and starred in. Not only was it a critical and commercial hit, it launched Carell’s career in a big way. The movie got a small bit of awards buzz, with much of it centered on his acting/writing. It’s an absolutely hilarious and surprisingly touching comedy, a modern classic, in fact. That performance got Carell on the A-list, allowing him to attempt to do something different his next time out.
Carell then followed that up with Little Miss Sunshine, which damn near scored him a Best Supporting Actor nomination. For many, that announced him as someone who could really do more than just make you laugh. Often acting without dialogue, he crafted a sad character that you felt for in a big way. It was very strong work and his snub by the Academy is one that many feel is a particularly stinging one.
The other notable films in his filmography so far include the likes of Dan in Real Life, Date Night, Despicable Me, Dinner for Schmucks, Evan Almighty, […]

Jon Stewart makes a strong debut as a filmmaker with “Rosewater”

This weekend, a film by the name of Rosewater begins its theatrical run. On the surface, it seems like one of many awards hopefuls, in that it’s a biopic/true story citing a political issue, among other things. Nothing to get to excited about, right? Well, I’d argue to the contrary. There’s at least one unusual note about it, and that’s the fact that it’s written and directed by Jon Stewart. The host of The Daily Show turned to cinema in order to tell this story that clearly touched him in a profound way, and it’s a very good film, let me tell you that. Stewart is a more than capable filmmaker, so there’s a chance that the former Oscar host could find himself an Academy Award nominee this year.
In case you’re not aware of what the movie is about, Rosewater tells the story of Maziar Bahari, a journalist who was imprisoned for about four months in Iran while covering the aftermath of the Presidential election in that country. His time spent in the West makes the Revolutionary Guard assume that he’s a spy, especially after seeing a segment of The Daily Show that he appeared in. Bahari is beaten, interrogated, and consistently has to fight to not have his spirit broken. At the end of it all, his cause became an international one and he was released. Stewart writes and directs, with Gael Garcia Bernal in the lead role. The supporting cast includes Shohreh Aghdashloo, Kim Bodnia, Golshifteh Farahani, Claire Foye, Jason Jones, and Dimitri Leonidas.
The film obviously has a chance to compete for some awards attention. If Academy members are won over by the work (it’s clear they already like him), then Rosewater could compete in Best Picture, Best Director (for Stewart), Best Actor (for Bernal), Best Supporting Actress (for Aghdashloo), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score. Some of those are less likely than others, but the flick really can make a play for Picture and Adapted Screenplay. In another year Actor or even possibly Director would be more on the table, but the competition is too fierce. Still, if Oscar voters take to this one, it could do better than many are expecting it too.
That all being said, the movie so far has been received in a very minor way. Critics like it for the most part, but there haven’t really been […]

Jon Stewart beats Jay Leno in key ratings demographic

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: For the first time in 10 years, Jon Stewart has bested Jay Leno in the important 18-49 demographic for ratings, suggesting that a shift is occurring in late-night television programming toward Stewart’s cable hit “The Daily Show.”
It also shows how far Leno has fallen since returning to “The Tonight Show” after the Conan O’Brien controversy. Once the king of late night, Leno has seen his kingdom erode as viewers defect to Letterman, O’Brien and, now, Stewart.
Granted, it was a close second quarter. Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” pulled in an average of 1.295 million viewers while Leno’s program nabbed 1.292, according to THR.
But as the trade points out, the back-to-back pairing of “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report” “dominates with younger viewers and men,” finishing the quarter as “the top-rated late night shows on all of television among viewers 18-34 and men 18-34 and 18-24.”
