Golden Globe Awards: Looking into their books

HollywoodNews.com: Golden Globes Calls Dick Clark Productions “Devious” But Fib About Their Compensation
The Golden Globes–aka the Hollywood Foreign Press Association– must be going crazy at this point. They lost their intial case against Dick Clark Productions. The court ruled that DCP has the right to keep producing the Golden Globes show for NBC and negotiating with them–without the greedy HFPA’s involvement. So the HFPA has filed a motion for a final judgement, saying they can’t wait for an appeal to come through–thinking that the court will reverse itself and give them back control of the show. Buried in the HFPA’s latest filing are a couple of interesting items. First, the group spent $3.7 million on legal fees last year–half of what they get from NBC for licensing their name. That alone must be sending them over the wall.
But second–is this little assertion: .“…HFPA’s members work without pay throughout the year to put the Golden Globes together and the production and broadcast of the television show requires close cooperation between HFPA’s members and dcp. There is no assurance that HFPA’s members will be able to cooperate with dcp on future Golden Globe Awards Shows, given dcp’s deceitful and devious conduct towards its supposed “partner.”
Well, that part about “members work without pay” is not exactly true. On its annual Form 990, the HFPA lists a bunch of salaries for its officers. In 2010, the total was up to $191,000 spread over 11 people. Phil Berk, who’s not even the president anymore, gets $61,000 a year. Not only that, the HFPA spent over $671,000 on travel expenses in 2010-2011 to go in luxury to film festivals around the world–although they are often subsidized in junkets by the studios. They paid $26,000 for rent of the building they occupy in West Hollywood–their clubhouse, so to speak. On the most recent Form 990 they also list $200,000 for unspecified “outside services” and $122,000 for “meetings and press conferences” and another $96,000 to run their website.
Of course, the ironic thing about all of this is that HFPA does no more than other critics group in any other city. They see all the movies and TV shows that come out in a year, and then make judgements about who should get which prizes. The New York and Los Angeles Film Critics Circles do the same thing, put on modest dinners, and hand out awards. The difference [...]

Golden Globes loses lawsuit against Dick Clark Productions

HollywoodNews.com: The Hollywood Foreign Press has lost its lawsuit against Dick Clark Productions. The HFPA–paid over $6 million a year to license its name by NBC–had contended that Dick Clark had no right to negotiate with NBC without them. Today senior US District Judge A. Howard Matz ruled that he disagreed with them. The ruling follows. This is a blow to the HFPA, a greedy group that has suffered numerous scandals over the years. The ruling means The Golden Globes are now in the backseat. Dick Clark Productions can produce the show through 2018, and continue to make deals with NBC as long as the network wants the show. The HFPA will have to accept their deals.
In the end, it was just a story of greed. The HFPA consists of about 80 people, many of whom have no credentials and don’t see all the movies every year. In past decades, they were broadcast on cable, then moved to CBS. CBS kicked them off the air during a scandal involving “actress” Pia Zadora, and NBC picked them up. I’ve written over the years about the group’s many crazy stunts, their domineering attitude, and the questionable credits of certain of their members. In the meantime, they’ve used the annual fee they receive from NBC to bankroll their arrogance. The movies they’re supposed to see, and the choices they make, are no different in the end than dozens of other critics’ groups. There’s nothing special about the HFPA. But they’ve managed to turn it into a tax free business.

Angelina Jolie’s Oscar dress resembles one of Jennifer Aniston’s dresses

HollywoodNews.com: Angelina Jolie certainly got some attention for her leg-baring black dress at the Oscars last night, but it may not be the first time we’ve seen this look.
The custom Atelier Versace dress Jolie wore yesterday was definitely similar to a dress Jennifer Aniston wore at the Golden Globes last year, states UsMagazine.com. Aniston wore a high-slit Valentino dress in black as well.
The one main difference was that Aniston’s dress had one strap while Jolie’s was strapless. But both dresses definitely put the right leg on display.
Who do you think pulls off the look better?

HollywoodNews.com: It sounds like one romance may be back in action as ‘Glee’ star Dianna Agron is reportedly dating her recent ex, Sebastian Stan, once again.
The two reportedly rekindled things around the Golden Globes after breaking up at the end of last year when they had dated for about seven months, states UsMagazine.com. They were most recently reportedly spotted out to dinner together on Valentine’s Day in Hollywood.
It is even reported that Agron and Stan were caught kissing that night while waiting for their car.
The two allegedly split the first time due to the long distance in their relationship and her suspicion that he was cheating on her.

Zooey Deschanel opens up about her beauty style

HollywoodNews.com: Zooey Deschanel is definitely not a typical Hollywood actress, but it seems she couldn’t be happier with being just the way she is.
Deschanel recently opened up about her beauty style to ‘Allure’ magazine and feels like she knows exactly who she is, states UsMagazine.com. “I’m bangs and eyes. It’s who I am. There have been periods when I’ve grown my bangs out, but I always cut them back,” Deschanel commented about knowing herself.
Deschanel most recently rocked a slightly different hairstyle at the Golden Globes, but apparently doesn’t care what any of the critics said.

The Taming of Ricky Gervais: Golden Globe Awards

By Michael Russnow
HollywoodNews.com: For the past two years I’ve written reviews of The Golden Globes excoriating Ricky Gervais for mostly tedious humor and lapses in judgment that resulted in so-called jokes that were in severely bad taste.
I’m not a prude and have enjoyed Gervais in the past when he came forth on other awards shows for five minutes or so with often ingenious biting patter, but somehow, to me — and quite a few others — once he became the host he went bonkers and said things that weren’t particularly creative or clever just to get a reaction with an outrageously bad pun at someone else’s expense.
So, it was somewhat of a shock that the Golden Globes committee invited him back for another turn and even more of one to see that, in spite of Gervais’ “warnings” in the Golden Globes promos the past few weeks to prepare us for upcoming shocks, that in reality he must have made a deal with the devil to get the national exposure afforded on the highly rated show.
From the outset when he first appeared to a polite round of applause of quite short duration, he seemed very uneasy in spite of his previously announced bravado. Even the audience had muted expressions on their faces from nothing at all to forced smiles, and responded with only limited displays of laughter.
So, I can’t damn Ricky Gervais this year, except to say that for the most part he wasn’t all that funny. Occasionally, he was on target and had a few pungent moments that hit their mark in a mildly savage way. But while I don’t have the minute by minute tally of his prior performances, it appeared that he was offstage much more than in the past. When he did reemerge he often did so holding a glass of booze in an act that was more pretense of being cool while he delivered jokes that were often flat.
And there were rejoinders from the presenters, even to a relatively slight off-color mocking reference to Madonna as “like a virgin.” When the singer came on stage she rebutted Gervais’ comment with a zinger that, regarding a tryst with him, she “hadn’t kissed a girl in awhile.”
It was becoming painful to watch him, even if one wasn’t at all offended, because his performance was so emasculated, though in his introduction to Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek whatever [...]

Jessica Biel hits the Golden Globes without an engagement ring

HollywoodNews.com: The mystery continues in regard to whether or not Jessica Biel is engaged to Justin Timberlake.
Although it’s been rumored that his grandmother confirmed the engagement, the two have yet to comment. And while many thought the Golden Globes would have them confirming it, Biel showed up without an engagement ring on, states UsMagazine.com.
Biel was wearing quite a bit of jewelry, but fans everywhere didn’t spot the much wondered about ring.
Do you think they will be announcing an engagement soon?

Elton John upset for loss to Madonna at Golden Globes?

HollywoodNews.com: Elton John and Madonna were competing last night for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes, and while she walked away the winner, Elton may be a little bitter.
Elton’s husband, David Furnish, ended up going off on the outcome on Facebook, states TMZ. “Madonna. Best song???? F**k off!!!” Furnish commented.
He then continued, “Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing to do with merit. Her acceptance speech was embarrassing in it’s narcissism.”
Not only that, but Elton reportedly told a reporter on the red carpet that Madonna had no “f**kin’ chance” of winning.
What do you think about the rivalry?
