“The Vow” and “Safe House” fend off “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”

By Scott Mendelson
HollywoodNews.com: It was yet another ‘photo-finish’ at the box office over this President’s Day weekend, but as always, it’s the hard numbers rather than the arbitrary rankings that matter. But since we need to decide which movies to discuss first, in order we shall go! For the moment, it appears that Safe House will top the charts in its second weekend after barely missing the top slot last weekend. It grossed $23.9 million over the Fri-Sun weekend and $28 million over the holiday. Safe House will have grossed $82 million by Monday, a rather huge total for Mr. Washington. In just eleven days, Safe House is Washington’s 7th-biggest grosser, out-grossing such films as Training Day ($76 million), Man On Fire ($77 million), and Unstoppable ($81 million). Barring a complete collapse, Safe House should become Denzel Washington’s fifth $100 million grosser over the next weekend, with an outside shot of eclipsing the $130 million gross of American Gangster, which is currently his top grosser. While we can debate how much credit co-star Ryan Reynolds gets for this one (he certainly didn’t hurt…), Safe House is already his fourth-biggest grosser and will likely out-gross Green Lantern’s $116 million total in a few weeks. I’m frankly shocked at the strong legs for this one, as it’s certainly one of Washington’s worst genre entries in a long career with a number of solid adult-skewing action pictures (it looks like it was shot through a puke filter and edited in a blender, plus the script is so generic it could have been written in a Mad Libs book). Still, star-power is a rare thing these days, and Denzel Washington clearly has it.
So does Channing Tatum and, in the right project, Rachel McAdams, so it will be interesting to see how The Vow’s popularity affect next month’s 21 Jump Street. The Vow is estimated to gross around $23.6 million for the Fri-Sun period and $27.4 million for the Fri-Sun period. No matter who ends up on top, both films exhibited strong holds. With $89 million by Monday, The Vow is already Screen Gems’s highest grossing film ever, topping the $80 million total of Dear John. The 43% drop for The Vow is slightly smaller than the 47% drop for Dear John, but the new film was bolstered by a [...]

Which young actor has Ryan Gosling as his role model?

HollywoodNews.com: Ryan Gosling has a red hot career right now so it doesn’t come as much of a surprise that he would be a role model for many young actors.
Up-and-coming actor Josh Hutcherson recently revealed that he looks up to Gosling as someone he likes as far as his acting style, states People. “I like his subtleties and how he really internalizes a lot of the emotion. And for me, that’s kind of my style. So, he’s definitely a big person to look up to,” Hutcherson admitted.
Hutcherson is currently starring in ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island’ with costar Vanessa Hudgens.

Vanessa Hudgens up for “Journey 2″ role

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Zac Efron effectively has distanced himself from the “High School Musical” franchise that launched him into the stratosphere. He turned heads in “Hairspray,” earned positive remarks for his comedic timing in the otherwise forgettable “17 Again.” And has tried his hand at drama – with mixed results – in “Me and Orson Welles” and “Charlie St. Cloud.” They might not have been slam-dunk hits, but he’s out there trying new things.
His girlfriend and “High School” cohort, Vanessa Hudgens, hasn’t been able to break away just yet. Her only major role outside of the Disney franchise was “Bandslam.” Not much of a stretch. Hudgens is part of the but-kicking female ensemble lined up for Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch,” but we won’t see that until next year. It could be the film that shows us a new side of Hudgens and puts her on the road to non-Disney success.
Here’s news that the tide might have turned in Hudgens’ favor. The Hollywood Reporter says the actress is in “final negotiations” to join Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson in the “Journey to the Center of the Earth” sequel, tentatively subtitled “The Mysterious Island.” Directed by Brad Peyton, the plot would take the trio in search of a mysterious island as they search for Hutcherson’s gradfather. Johnson, of course, replaces Brendan Fraser, who headlined the original 3D film.
According to the report, Hudgens would play “a Pacific Islander who gets swept into the adventure and ends up falling for Hutcherson.”
Good for him. And if Hudgens lands the role, good for her.

Dwayne Johnson joining “Journey” sequel after Fraser fades

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Dwayne Johnson has a habit of taking over film franchises launched by Brendan Fraser.
First, it was “The Scorpion King,” a spin off of Fraser’s high-tech “Mummy” movies. Now we’re getting word that the artist formerly known as “The Rock” will star in Journey to the Center of the Earth 2” now that Fraser has bowed out to a conflict over start dates.
What is it with these two?
According to Heat Vision, original “Earth” co-star Josh Hutcherson will return as Sean Anderson, but Johnson will join the story as the boyfriend of Hutcherson’s mom. The two will go on an adventure to a mysterious island to find Hutcherson’s missing grandfather. The script reportedly is based on Jules Verne’s “The Mysterious Island.”
Like the original, the sequel also will be filmed in 3-D. Brad Peyton has been given the reigns, after knocking it out of the park with this summer’s “Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore.”
“Journey” should begin filming soon to meet its announced release date of Sept. 23, 2011.
