Jimmy Fallon celebrates Rolling Stones with performances by Green Day, Phish

HollywoodNews.com: “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” will host a weeklong celebration of the Rolling Stones beginning May 10, saluting the re-release of the band’s 10th studio album “Exile on Main Street.” Regarded as one of the greatest albums in rock ‘n’ roll history and one of the most defining of the Stones’ catalogue, “Exile” will be available in the U.S. May 18. The weeklong event is being sponsored by Bud Light Golden Wheat, culminating in a special limited commercial broadcast on Friday, May 14th.
“We’re very excited that ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ is devoting a special week to ‘Exile on Main Street’ with our new documentary ‘Stones In Exile’ premiering for the first time ever in the U.S. on Friday,” said the Rolling Stones.
Spotlighting tracks from the album, the “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” musical guests will perform selected songs from “Exile on Main Street” each night during the week.
“Exile on Main Street was a defining album from the Rolling Stones. Its influence has only grown in the years since,” said Lorne Michaels, executive producer of “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” “This is an opportunity to devote a week of television in appreciation of that seminal work.”
This new compilation features 10 tracks originally recorded during the “Exile” era and only recently discovered while working on the reissue project. The unearthed tracks which include such titles as “Plundered My Soul,” “Dancing in the Light,” “Following the River” and “Pass The Wine” have undergone a unique evolution, while staying true to the essence of the 1972 album. Alternate versions of “Soul Survivor” and “Loving Cup” are also part of the “Exile” bonus materials.
“Exile on Main Street is one of the greatest records of all time,” said Jimmy Fallon. “I am a huge Rolling Stones fan and it is a dream come true to celebrate the re-release of the album here at Late Night.”
Reprise Records’ four-time Grammy Award winning Green Day will kick things off on Monday, May 10. The trio is currently promoting the Broadway musical “American Idiot,” which opened on April 20 and Green Day: Rock Band, their upcoming video game due out June 8. Green Day will hit the road this summer, touring Europe in June and July before returning to the US and Canada in August.
“The Rolling Stones’ influence on music is undeniable,” said Green Day frontman Billie [...]

Exclusive: Sting, Zooey Deschanel rock new Kinks doc “Do It Again”

BY SEAN O’CONNELL
The Kinks, to me, were a second-tier rock outfit. That’s not a slight against the band. Several of their hits, from “Lola,” “All Day and All of the Night” and “Tired of Waiting for You” to “You Really Got Me,” became part of pop culture’s conscience. They just never attained the same level of popularity and mainstream success as legendary first-tier rockers The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones or The Who.
Geoff Edgers would disagree. The Boston Globe reporter views The Kinks as one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. And with his 40th birthday fast approaching — the milestone of the mid-life crisis — Edgers sets a personal and professional goal. He’s going to reunite the four original members of the band, including feuding brothers Ray and Dave Davies, who haven’t spoken in years.
Robert Patton-Spruill’s documentary “Do It Again,” which trails Edgers on his impossible quest, screened to a raucous crowd last night at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, N.C. And while official awards won’t be handed out until Sunday, the lively and personable “Do It Again” earns a special achievement award as the best film I’ve seen so far at the fest.
“Again” dives into the volatile history of the British rock outfit, who admit to sabotaging their career every time fame came knocking. Most of the battles are attributed to lead singer and chief songwriter Ray Davies’ pride and ego, which struck sour notes with brother Dave.
But the film, as all good docs do, draws us into Edgers’ personal mission, and we suffer as this journalist deals with salary cuts at his unstable job and wince as Ray (and his publicity associates) plays hard-to-get with Edgers’ dream.
Others play along, however. Edgers’ status as a journalist buys him face time with rockers who happen to be big fans of The Kinks and want to see the brothers reunited. Sting, R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, actress/musician Zooey Deschanel, Robyn Hitchcock, Paul Weller, and, eventually, Dave Davies, open up for Patton-Spruill’s cameras, recollecting their favorite Kinks songs and contemplating on the emotional forces that eventually drive bands apart. In an entertaining Q-and-A following the screening, Edgers revealed that $15,000 of his film’s $125,000 went to film an interview with former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, a member of rock royalty, who eventually blocked his involvement in the project.
“Do It Again” doesn’t [...]

Will.I.Am’s remix of The Who’s “My Generation” to benefit Oxfam’s Haiti Fund

BY STAFF
Will.I.Am was remixing a version of The Who’s “My Generation” for the superbowl when the Haiti earthquake disaster happened. The song is set to debut on February 7 during the 2nd quarter of Super Bowl XLIV in an ad for FLO TV. The spot will air right before The Who take the stage during halftime.
- Listeners can hear a portion of the song today at www.flo.tv or www.music.yahoo.com.
- Beginning at 5:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 7, people can listen to the full-length song at www.flo.tv.
- The track will also be available for purchase for $1.29 on Amazon.com, Dipdive.com and TheWho.com, with all proceeds benefiting Oxfam’s Haiti Earthquake Response Fund.
But since the Haiti earthquake, Will.I.Am felt compelled to do something more with the song. He said, “I was moved to do something, and I immediately reached out to Pete Townshend and FLO TV. We decided to come together to create a full-length version of the track. This version will contain additional lyrics not included in the commercial, and all proceeds from the song will go directly to benefit the people of Haiti.”
Pete Townshend released a statement saying, “I am relieved to be able to do something visible to reach out to our friends in Haiti – and I am honoured to have such a hot and credible artist like will.i.am working with ‘My Generation,’ a song I wrote back when times were changing, but maybe didn’t change enough. Will wants to bring hope to the music rather that just the angst and frustration it once carried, and he has enough life and vigour in him to pull this off. Let’s hope that it generates some cash down the year to help rebuild Haiti. Most of all let’s hope it lets the people of Haiti know that we love them and remember them and pray for them in our crazy way using music. Let’s hope the times do change soon.”
Raymond C. Offenheiser, president of Oxfam America, said, “Oxfam is grateful for the support of the artistic community during such trying times. The creative and generous initiative of will.i.am, Slash and The Who to support our response effort in Haiti is such an inspired way to reach more people who want to be part of the movement to change the world.”
