An Early Glimpse at some Advance Oscar Predictions

Now that we’re officially a quarter of the way through 2014, I figured I’d debut my year in advance Academy Award predictions. These are actually the ones that I came up with back in March the night of the Oscars, so they’re not the most up to date, but they’re a good starting point for the season. I’m also excluding winners this time out, just so we can start slowly. Depending on how the season progresses, these can evolve into weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly posts, so for now we’ll play it by ear. I’m always keen to share predictions though, so it’s safe to say that this won’t be an infrequent series.
Basically, I see this season as one that could really favor Tim Burton’s Big Eyes, Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher, David Fincher’s Gone Girl, Jason Reitman’s Men, Women, & Children, and Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. If I had to pick way too early frontrunners, Foxcatcher and Unbroken would be the two. They seem to have potential for across the board appeal, and that’s something an early contender always wants to have in its corner. Nobody knows anything at this point, but if you had a gun to your head, those two are the ones that seem safest to back right now.
Other titles you should keep in mind are Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, Josh Boone’s The Fault in Our Stars, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice, and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, just to name a few. The vast majority of contenders are sight unseen right now though, so everything is purely speculation, and will be well until the fall. We’ll know some more soon, but all won’t be revealed for many months. That’s part of the fun of all this though, at least for me. I love seeing how it all unfolds and tracking how my predictions evolve/if any of my long shots wind up coming to fruition. It’s all educated guesswork, but I pride myself on being a decent prognosticator, so I try to keep track of it all. You’ll all get to be the judge throughout 2014, and this isn’t a bad place to begin. My final predictions rarely resemble these initial ones, but it could be fun to compare those as well too…later on, of course.

Marion Cotillard to be nominated for “Best Actress” for her performance in “Rust and Bone”

Our friend and one of our favorite actresses, Marion Cotillard, is on her way to be nominated for “Best Actress” for her performance in “Rust and Bone.” This coming January 10th the Academy Awards will announce the nominees for the Oscars. We strongly believe that Marion will be one of them.
Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard is internationally renowned for her unbridled commitment to her art, challenging herself with each new role.
Cotillard is starring in Jacques Audiard’s “Rust and Bone,” alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Bouli Lanners and Céline Sallette. The film was co-written by Jacques Audiard and Thomas Bidegain and adapted from the acclaimed book of short stories by Craig Davidson.
Cotillard recently wrapped production on director and co-writer James Gray’s “Untitled James Gray Project,” starring opposite Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner. The film focuses on ‘Ewa Cybulska,’ (Cotillard) and her sister, ‘Magda,’ who sail to Ellis Island in the early twentieth century, only to be separated when Magda falls ill. With nowhere to go, ‘Ewa’ quickly falls prey to ‘Bruno’ (Phoenix), a charming but wicked man who forces her to perform in his nightly burlesque show. There she encounters the dazzling ‘Orlando the Magician’ (Renner), who sweeps her off her feet and may be her only chance to reunite with her sister and escape the nightmare. Additionally, she also completed production on Guillaume Canet’s “Blood Ties” opposite Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Mila Kunis, and Zoe Saldana. Set in 1970s Brooklyn, the film explores organized crime and the relationship between two brothers on either side of the law who face off against each other.
In 2008, Cotillard became the second French actress to ever win an Oscar®, and the first to win an acting award for a performance in the French language. The worldwide critical acclaim came for her riveting portrayal of legendary French chanteuse, Edith Piaf, in the film “La Vie En Rose.”
Cotillard’s credits include the successful French “Taxi” film series, written by Luc Besson, Yann Samuell’s “Love Me If You Dare,” and Tim Burton’s “Big Fish.” She garnered her first Cesar Award for Best Supporting Actress, for her performance in Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s “A Very Long Engagement.” Following that, she went on to star in Ridley Scott’s “A Good Year;” Michael Mann’s “Public Enemies,” and Rob Marshall’s “Nine,” the screen adaptation of the hit musical. The Contenders: Best Superhero Films of All-Time

HollywoodNews.com: Now that ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is out in theaters, it sort of feels like we’ve reached a milestone point in the realm of superhero flicks… perhaps even an apex if you will. Everything that will come next for the genre will be judged on a different playing field due to that film and this year’s ‘The Avengers’ as well (essentially you now have to go big or go home). Those two films were as anticipated as any other major comic book film out there, and some might say the hype has been as much as any other big flick in general. As most people would argue that 2012 has seen the release of two of the best superhero movies of all time, I thought it was only proper to give a little rundown of what I think are the 10 best of all time (at least so far).
Obviously there are lots of contenders for a list like this one, some more universally embraced than others, and it’s fair to say that no two people would come up with the same combination of flicks, but this is mine, so just keep that in mind as you read on. Of course I’ll want you all to give your picks later in the comments, but for now let’s get started and focus on my picks and see where things go from there. Which filmmakers who took multiple dips into the superhero pool got a citation from me here? Did I give any love to Tim Burton’s contributions to the genre? What about Jon Favreau’s? Presumably Christopher Nolan’s, right? Perhaps Sam Raimi’s? Bryan Singer’s could be in play, couldn’t they? Maybe even Joel Schumaker’s? (I assure you I did not go that route). First off, here are some that just missed the cut for me when compiling this list of lifesavers…

The Avengers grossed an incredible $103.2 million

Unfortunately, the news wasn’t so good for Tim Burton and Johnny Depp’s “Dark Shadows,” which started to a $28.8 million domestically.

Why some comic adaptations failed: Iron Man 2, Punisher: War Zone, Superman Returns, Hulk

HollywoodNews.com: Actor Tom Hiddleston wrote an eloquent essay yesterday for The Guardian basically praising and defending the sub-genre known as the superhero picture. Plenty of disdain for the genre comes from the very notion that it’s big-budget entertainment based on literature that was technically intended for children that gobbles up production dollars and screen space that otherwise might be allotted for more explicitly grown-up fare. But at least some of the alleged weariness of this specific type of film (the superhero comic book adaptation) comes from a feeling that all-too many of them are basically telling the same story. You’ve generally got the standard origin story which (let’s be honest) basically takes Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie and pours it into a different color bottle (I say that as a big fan of Spider-Man and Captain America). Then you have the sequels, which are quite often merely a case of escalation and/or the hero dealing with self-doubt often while in combat with a ‘bigger/badder’ version of himself (again, thank you Superman II). But over the last twenty years or so, there have been a handful of high-profile comic book films that have attempted to play around with the formula but have artistically failed anyway. As a rebuttal to the idea that ‘all superhero movies are the same’ as well as a reaffirmation of the idea that ‘it’s not what it’s about, but how it’s about it’, let’s take a look at five comic book adaptations that didn’t play it safe, but didn’t come out on top either.
Batman & Robin (1997)
I would argue that it’s a sign of maturity among film pundits and critics when they are finally adult enough to realize that Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin is not the worst film ever made. Peel away all the attempted camp, the self-depreciating homoerotic jokes, the terrible lead performance from Arnold Schwarzenegger and you’re left with simply a good story told very poorly. As the fourth film in a franchise, Schumacher and company had a bit more leeway in terms of where they wanted to take their film this time around. And as such, they told a rather thoughtful tale of an adult and sane Bruce Wayne trying to figure out how to be an appropriate head to his surrogate family. IMAX domination coming this Summer

HollywoodNews.com: Simply put, during the first twelve weeks of summer (May 4th to July 20th), there are six, maybe seven major movies all debuting in IMAX for at least the first week of their respective theatrical runs. Three of them are in May, one is in June, and two or three are in July. What are they you ask? Well…
The Avengers goes first on May 4th, with a week of 3D IMAX play before losing (or sharing?) those screens to Warner Bros’ Dark Shadows. Despite its big-scale action and explosions, Universal’s $212 million Battleship will go out purely on 35mm 2D film, which gives the Tim Burton vampire comedy two full weeks until it loses its 2D IMAX screens to Sony’s Men In Black 3D. Universal again forgoes IMAX for its next major tentpole, the $175 million (!!) Snow White and the Huntsmen, which debuts on June 1st. That gives Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones a two week run before being supplanted by 20th Century Fox’s Prometheus, which will get 3D IMAX screens for 3.5 weeks, owing to the surprising choice by Pixar to not go IMAX for Brave on June 22nd. and Paramount’s GI Joe: Retribution going out in 35mm 2D on June 29th. If that changes, then just add another one or two to the June tally. But come July 3rd, Sony steals the IMAX screens right back for The Amazing Spider-Man 3D. Spidey gets the IMAX screens for at least 1.5 weeks before Fox debuts Ice Age: Continental Drift on July 13th (which isn’t listed on the IMAX home page but is listed as debuting in IMAX 3D in Fox’s marketing materials). Come what may, summer basically ends on July 20th.
That of course is the release date for Chris Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which not only features large chunks of the film shot on IMAX film but actually seems to be keeping those IMAX screens all the way until October 5th, when Disney debut’s Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie. Although not listed on the IMAX website, it is possible that Disney’s Finding Nemo 3D reissue and/or Sony’s Resident Evil: Retribution will end up going the IMAX route in September. That the last six weeks of summer 2012 features not a single IMAX debut would signify either that Warner Bros scored [...]

Warner Bros hides Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows…

HollywoodNews.com: There’s a new Tim Burton coming out from Warner Bros. in just over two months. Aside from a couple stills and some half-hearted interview statements from the cast and Mr. Burton, we haven’t heard or seen a thing from it. No posters, no trailers, no TV spots, nothing. It’s October of 1996, and I’m of course referring to Mars Attacks!. Many of my readers are too young to remember way-back-when, but the near-absence of marketing materials for Tim Burton’s $80 million private-joke (which today plays like half-blockbuster deconstruction and half-right wing political fantasy) was a source of frustration for a 16-year old Tim Burton fan who was eagerly awaiting that first preview. Today we stand in the same boat with another Warner Bros-funded Tim Burton ‘comedy’. But just over fifteen years later, what was a source of frustration is now a pleasant surprise.
Nine weeks to go, and I really don’t need to see an onslaught of spoiler-filled marketing materials for the upcoming Dark Shadows. Ten weeks to go, and I have absolutely no idea what kind of film Tim Burton and his merry band have delivered. I don’t know what it looks like, what the tone is, or all-that much about the plot. And in this era of ‘spoil the movie a year in advance’, that’s a special thing indeed.
Whether because Warner Bros. didn’t know how to sell the sci-fi horror/comedy or because they saw the writing on the wall and tried to limit their financial losses, the studio waited until 4 weeks prior to release to unleash that first Mars Attacks! trailer. Attached to Space Jam, the 2.5-minute trailer was pretty much all we saw of the film in America, aside from a TV spot or two until Thanksgiving weekend, when Warner Bros. held a national sneak preview. I attended that sneak preview, loved the hell out of the movie, and spent the next two weeks trying (in vain) to convince friends and peers that it was absolutely worth checking out. But, in retrospect, it was a pretty stupid idea for Warner Bros to sneak a genuine cult film so that the few die-hards could see it two weeks early and not contribute one dime to the box office (all ticket sales went to Space Jam, which played for free afterward). HollywoodNews.com: Anyway, it looks pretty sharp, and Depp’s make-up certainly looks less weird than the paparazzi photos that made him look like Michael Jackson. I know nothing of the Dark Shadows television show and would prefer to keep it that way so as to judge this picture as open-mindedly as possible. It’s no secret that I’m not the world’s most optimistic Tim Burton fan at the moment, but the horror-fan has never actually dabbled with vampires before, so it would seem that this is something more than a paycheck job. It is probably too much to hope that Warner Bros. lets this out with an R-rating, but that would certainly be a step in the right direction. Come what may, the picture will be released on May 12th, 2012 (alas, the second weekend-of-summer death slot), so we’ll see.

Johnny Depp, Tim Burton confirm cast for “Dark Shadows”

Hollywoodnews.com: Tim Burton has filled out the cast for his “Dark Shadows” update, including some fresh names and an actress we all could have assumed would find her way into the film at some point.
Jonny Lee Miller and Chloe Moretz have been cast alongside Johnny Depp in the horror-thriller, which begins shooting at Pinewood Studios, THR reports. In addition, Burton’s wife (and frequent collaborator) Helena Bonham Carter officially has been confirmed as a member of the ensemble.
Burton’s film is an adaptation of a cult TV show that’s a favorite of both he and Depp. It reportedly casts the “Sweeney Todd” star as “self-loathing vampire” Barnabas Collins, who “returns to his human roots in search of his lost love.” Early reports also have the vamp interacting with various monsters, witches, werewolves and ghosts, so we understand why the material appeals to Burton.
The director already had cast Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Bella Heathcote and Jackie Earle Haley, though this will be Depp’s show. Everyone else in Burton’s productions end up being window dressing to his beloved star and longtime creative partner.
THR says “Dark Shadows” will shoot entirely in the UK. Warner Bros. plans to release it May 11, 2012.
