Barack Obama screens “Red Tails” for Tuskegee Airmen

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: Have you ever wondered what the White House’s official screening room looks like?
I have, which is part of the reason why I’m pretty geeked over this official photo released by White House officials. It shows President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama greeting actual Tuskegee Airmen ahead of a screening of Anthony Hemingway’s “Red Tails,” which opens in theaters on Friday.
Fox has been doing an excellent job of bringing the airmen to choice promotional activities, celebrating them as heroes and letting them do the talking on behalf of this extraordinary historical story.
“Red Tails,” executive produced by George Lucas, tells the story of the first African American pilots to conduct important aerial missions on behalf of the U.S. during World War II.
The film stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Tristan Wilds, Ne-Yo, Nate Parker, Method Man and more. It opens everywhere on Jan. 20, but the Obamas saw it on Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Here’s the photo. What do you think?

First trailer for Lucasfilm’s “Red Tails” adventure

By Sean O’Connell
Hollywoodnews.com: We have been tracking the progress of Anthony Hemingway’s “Red Tails,” which tells the story of history’s first all African-American aerial combat unit. Produced by Lucasfilm, the movie will be distributed by 20th Century Fox and released on Jan. 20, 2012. The first full trailer debuted on Yahoo Movies! We’re posting it below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waZM5W2kNP0
“I am humbled and honored to direct the story of the Tuskegee Airmen — heroes who have paved the way so others could have the opportunity to pursue their dreams,” said Hemingway. “To be selected by George Lucas and Rick to direct this film was more than my wildest dreams come true. It’s been a blessing to work with them, along with the amazingly talented artists at Industrial Light & Magic. I’ve grown a lot on many levels from this experience. As director, I had the fortune to work with a highly skilled crew from the Czech Republic, U.K. and the U.S., along with a remarkably talented group of actors. The resonant beauty, strength and dedication of our heroes is reflected in the powerful ensemble cast.”
Hemingway’s aerial photography is breathtaking in this clip. And we know he can handle character work … his credits include “Treme” and “The Wire.”
And his cast is impressive. “Red Tails” stars Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Bryan Cranston, Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Method Man, Ne-Yo, Michael B. Jordan and Daniela Ruah.
The trailer is promising (even if the January release date is not). But we’ll see how “Red Tails” does when it opens next year.

Snippets from 10th Annual Movies for Grownups Awards

By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith
HollywoodNews.com: Lori Loughlin says she has no regrets about departing “90210″ and is leaving the CW show “on the very best of terms.” Lori, who’s been playing mom to Shenae Grimes and Tristan Wilds on the series since 2008, departs at season’s end as the show’s young cast of characters graduates from high school and heads off into college life.
“The CW has a demographic and they need to write to that demographic and I think the CW does that really well, you know?” she says.
“I think, for me, it’s time to creatively move on, because there’s not that much for me to do, and again, I understand and I have no hard feelings.”
Not that Loughlin’s character has lacked for drama through the years, with her own hot romances and a rivalry with Jennie Garth that heated up in Season 2. Garth told us recently that she disliked the direction “90210″ has been taking. Loughlin says, “You know, I think it’s fine. Jennie had a different attachment to the show. ‘Beverly Hills, 90210′ was her show for so many years, and she felt protective, almost motherly toward it. Along comes the new incarnation, and I don’t think she was happy with what they were doing. But for me, I had no attachment to the old version, so I was completely fine with it. I also thought it was a whole different show. Also, I think she had some issues with what they wanted to do with her character, and I understand that, because nobody knows that character better than Jennie. So at times I think she felt like they were misrepresenting Kelly.”
As for what Loughlin will do next, the mother of 11 and 12-year-old daughters, and wife of designer Mossimo Giannulli says, “I’m going to take a moment and breathe before I jump back into anything. I love television, but a series is a grind and so I just want to take a moment before I make any decisions.”
MEANWHILE: We caught up with Loughlin at this week’s 10th Annual Movies for Grownups Awards, the elegant event honoring the best of 2010 films appealing to mature moviegoers, put on by AARP at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Sally Field, Tony Bennett, Angela Lansbury, Larry Hagman, Jacqueline Bisset, Mickey Rooney and dozens of other names [...]
